This Tender Land

Two orphans run away from an abusive orphanage/school for Indian children, taking a young recently orphaned girl with them. A man-hunt ensues as they float down-river, attempting to find family in St. Louis. Along the way they meet with many people during the depression and are confronted with many abuses to Native Americans. Narrow escapes and near misses all around them culminate in a surprise ending. This was a second book club read for me.
