it was amazing
bookshelves: 2019-shelf, fantasy, ya

What was I thinking? I already count Ende's The Neverending Story to be one of the very best books ever written, so why would I waste SO MUCH TIME getting to anything else he wrote?

It blows my mind!

It's almost like SOMEONE HAS BEEN STEALING MY TIME! All those damn time-savers out there fooled me and tied me up and made my life a dull gray, smoke-filled, DEADLY TEDIOUS world! They kept me from this book... and now I know why!

It's a conspiracy of the Time-Banks.

Momo is pretty damn wonderful. The concept is classic, an epic battle between children who really understand the necessity of wasting time and the horrible monsters, the gray men, who offer up devilish riches to everyone else in order to suck the life and time from everyone else.

*shiver*

Honestly, if someone published this as the new up-and-coming YA book in today's day and age without knowing that Momo ever existed, it would be heralded as unique and gorgeous and groundbreaking. Gaiman would be blurbing it and there would be a twitter storm of praise.

But no, it's just some silly book written back in 1973. No one cares. ; ;

Ann (Inky Labyrinth) I looove discovering older hidden gems, particular fantasy ones that prove to still hold themselves up. I shamefully haven’t ever read The Neverending Story (yet), but this one almost sounds more intriguing to me. Thank you Bradley!

Trish I must confess to never having read this one. Maybe I should get to it soon.

Gerhard Lovely review. Read Neverending Story long before the movie, but never got around to Momo. Great to discover hidden gems like this, as Ann says.

Bradley I'm feeling the need to hunt down all his other stories now, too. :)

Macklin I love this book! Wrote a paper on it in uni

Bradley Is that ironic? :) Time stealing is kinda the whole thing about universities. :)

Hope I always wonder why this didn't get more attention. It's just so darn clever, and the story is wonderful.

Bradley Exactly.

Lata This is on my TBR! Now I definitely have to read it!

Bradley :) :)

message 11: by Dennis (new) - added it

Dennis I think I've only ever seen the movie. My sister loved that one when we were kids.

Bradley This is my chance to go... HUH? There's a movie?? lol

message 13: by Dennis (new) - added it

Dennis Ha! Yes. Momo (1986). It's a German movie directed by Johannes Schaaf. But don't ask me who that is. I've got absolutely no idea.

Bradley It looks rather low budget. ; ;

message 15: by Dennis (new) - added it

Dennis Well, it's a German movie. *shrugs*
I've not seen it for 25 years or so. Hard to tell if I would still like it now.

message 16: by Trish (new) - added it

Trish I've missed out on so many classics. *sighs* I had no idea there was a movie just like I didn't know there was a book about Neverending Story for the longest time.

Bradley Tell me when you want to read Neverending Story and I'll do it again. This time with my daughter. :)

message 18: by Trish (new) - added it

Trish Ok.

Carra I re-read it just a week ago, and was struck with the brilliance of it. I loved it the first time around too, but, being older now although perhaps not wiser *cough*, I sort of ”got it” better this time. It truly is a gem!

... and now I must te-read The Neverending Story as well. Oh well. ;)

Tisha (IG: Bluestocking629) Ha! You just single-handedly ended my self imposed book buying ban! :)

Bradley LOL, well, yeah, no one with a shred of intellectual or heart honesty can say no to Ende. :)

Gabi Your last paragraph is so spot on!

Bradley Alas, and that's a TRAGEDY. ; ;

message 24: by Gabi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gabi That's why I'm pleased that my eldest just got it to read m for school and now we're reading it together.

Bradley YAY! :)

Ebba Simone Bradley,
"Momo" is a wonderful novel. I keep finding many treasures amongst your reviews. Need to re-read "Momo" soon.
Ebba

Bradley I can only be glad about comments like these. :)

message 28: by Hope (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hope I was just thinking about how ingenious this book is. I love seeing other people give it its due.

Bradley I just wish it wasn't sliding into obscurity. It's worth remembering.

message 30: by Trish (new) - added it

Trish It's even sadder that it is sliding into obscurity even in its own country. I'd understand it somewhat in foreign countries, but right here? *sighs*

message 31: by Hope (new) - rated it 4 stars

Hope That makes me very sad.

I should really get myself a copy (previouslyread a library copy), so I can reread it.

Vanessa Next the Night of Wishes!? And then Jim button and Luke the engine driver!
