A collection of adventures.

A short story collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. After two full length novels, this is the first short story collection. A mixed bag, as always with collections goes, Sherlock Holmes being no exception to the rule. Half of them good or very good, the other half not so much. Very interesting to know the origins of Irene Adler, and hoping to see more of her in the future. And quite an amazing surprise to see the ever invincible Sherlock Holmes lose a case for the first time. Highly remarkable.

Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

The Best :
★★★★★ "A Scandal in Bohemia."
★★★★☆ "The Copper Beeches."
★★★★☆ "The Man with the Twisted Lip."

The Good :
★★★☆☆ "The Boscombe Valley Mystery." [3.5]
★★★☆☆ "The Speckled Band." [3.5]
★★★☆☆ "The Engineer’s Thumb."
★★★☆☆ "The Blue Carbuncle."

The Meh :
★★☆☆☆ "The Five Orange Pips." [2.5]
★★☆☆☆ "A Case of Identity."
★★☆☆☆ "The Red-Headed League." [1.5]
★☆☆☆☆ "The Beryl Coronet."
★☆☆☆☆ "The Noble Bachelor."

Still remaining, the BBC series.

It’s public domain, you can find it HERE.

PERSONAL NOTE :
[1892] [389p] [Collection] [Partly Recommendable]

★★★★☆ 1. A Study in Scarlet [3.5]
★★★☆☆ 2. The Sign of Four [2.5]
★★★☆☆ 3. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
★★★★☆ 4. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes [3.5]
★★★★☆ 5. The Hound of the Baskervilles
★★★★☆ 6. The Return of Sherlock Holmes
★★☆☆ 7. The Valley of Fear
★★★★☆ 8. His Last Bow [3.5]
★★★☆☆ 9. The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes [2.5]
★★★☆☆ 10. The Complete Sherlock Holmes

-----------------------------------------------

★★★☆☆ "La Banda de Lunares." [3.5]
★★★☆☆ "El Dedo Pulgar del Ingeniero."
★★★☆☆ "El Carbunclo Azul."

Lo Meh :
★★☆☆☆ "Las Cinco Semillas de Naranja." [2.5]
★★☆☆☆ "Un Caso de Identidad."
★★☆☆☆ "La Liga de los Pelirrojos." [1.5]
★☆☆☆☆ "La Corona de Berilos."
★☆☆☆☆ "El Aristócrata Solterón."

Queda pendiente, la serie de BBC.

Es dominio público, lo pueden encontrar ACA.

A Mac I recognize about 3/4 of those titles but can barely remember the stories - might be time for a revisit. Wonderful review, glad that these were mostly enjoyable! (did they include antagonist backstories at the end of every tale?)

Thank you Mac! No antagonist backstory this time, it seems that's reserved only for full length novels xD

Rosh ~ On Vacation. See you soon! Nice to see you enjoyed this collection to a great extent, Feddie! I too loved Irene Adler's origin story and wish she had a greater part to play in the overall series. Superb review!
You are in for a treat with the BBC series. :)

Thank you Rosh! I was quite disappointed not to see her again in another of the many stories. So sad, with only a brief protagonism she played a wonderful counterpart to Sherlock.

Jan I had no idea Sherlock Holmes has ever lost a case. Huh, I learn something new every day.

Federico DN Jan wrote: "I had no idea Sherlock Holmes has ever lost a case. Huh, I learn something new every day."

Me neither Jan, but he did. Sherlock is human xD.

message 20: by Noah (new)

Noah lovely review :) Irene Adler is one of my favorite characters and I hate when they make her Sherlock Holmes' love interest in retellings lol

Federico DN Alexandra wrote: "Nice to know that you enjoyed many of these stories! Great review :) I remember "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Speckled Band" very well."

Some very good ones in this book, "A Scandal in Bohemia" the best by far. Thank you Alexandra! Glad to hear you enjoyed some of them as well :D

Federico DN Noah wrote: "lovely review :) Irene Adler is one of my favorite characters and I hate when they make her Sherlock Holmes' love interest in retellings lol"

Such a great counterpart to Sherlock! Sad she didn't appear in another story though, so much wasted potential. Thank you Noah!

Chantel another fantastic review :)!! sorry that not all of the stories were that good but it wasn't a total loss!

message 24: by Ian (last edited Mar 13, 2023 12:28PM) (new)

Ian I've read so many of these and it was so long ago that I can't remember a lot of them. I can definitely recall 5 of those you mention, including 4 of your top 7. I quite liked The Red-Headed League. Other than that my ratings would be similar to yours.

Federico DN Chantel wrote: "another fantastic review :)!! sorry that not all of the stories were that good but it wasn't a total loss!"

Certainly not a loss, some very very good ones among them. Thank you Chantel :)

Thank you Ian! Happy to hear you liked them too :D. Sadly I couldn't enjoy the Red-Headed League. I think the idea was actually good, I just couldn't hold my disbelief with the absurdity of the club.

Imme van Gorp Wow he loses a case? That’s interesting for sure!!

Coco (Semi-Hiatus) At least you enjoyed most of them. That's all that matters in the end.

Yup. The infallible Sherlock proved himself fallible :D

Heidi I read this several times as a kid and reneged re-reading some of the stories later on. I loved how you reviewed each story— as an adult I’m sure I’d agree they weren’t all equal… but I do adore our arrogant detective and sweet sidekick!! 😎

I like rating individually so if I ever reread I know exactly what to look for without having to reread the whole thing xD. And if I help other readers too well even better lol. Glad you loved it too as a kid Heidi! Thank you!

Diana I have never read a single thing by Arthur Conan Doyle. Maybe I will someday. 🤔 I love that you gave individual ratings per story!

Federico DN Diana wrote: "I have never read a single thing by Arthur Conan Doyle. Maybe I will someday. 🤔 I love that you gave individual ratings per story!"

Thank you Diana! I always hear the The Hound of the Baskervilles as his best one, but if you want to taste a few of his short stories, I don't think this is a bad place to start. Everything of his I've read so far is pretty safe as a standalone.

Gracias Celia!

Surprised me too but it's true lol. Occasionally someone outsmarts Sherlock. Thank you Fran!

A.K. Kulshreshth Great review. The BBC series with Jeremy Brett remains firmly imprinted in my mind as the most authentic rendition of Holmes. I saw the series on Indian public TV in the 1980s...
