This book wasn't perfect. It annoyed me, for example, the way Betty and her siblings seemed to communicate in complex metaphors from the moment they found their tongues. I was also frustrated by a few of the chapters, which were so fantastically over-the-top that the book started to feel more like a work of magical realism than semi-biography. But having said that, this novel kicked ASS and made its points so clearly, so beautifully, so FURIOUSLY that I can't bear to offer less than five stars.

Love that high praise, Andy! I've been on the fence about reading this one.

Fantastic review Andy, I have to say your comment about how it annoyed you made me giggle 🤭 but glad it worked out in the end 🥰🥰🥰
I love your reviews, Andy! Your passion and energy resonate with every word!!! BETTY sounds flawed to near perfection!!! Awesome review :)
Andy thx for your honest review. Really appreciated it. And laughed at the surprise. Swaroop recommended it to me a while ago and he liked it a lot too. It’s still on my list. And think of it every once in a while. Somehow I have this feel it’s like Bone People, in that it will upset me a lot.

It's definitely a tough read, Debbie, and the more I think about it, the more mixed my feelings over it become. I'm sticking with the five stars, but I know that on another day, I might well have given two or three instead.

The kiddy geniuses were really something, Jennifer. Some of their wee pearls of wisdom could have put Aristotle to shame. :D

It's a very special book, Kathleen. My dad really didn't like it, but even he had to admit it was beautifully written.

It's interesting that you compare this one with The Bone People, Q. Now that I think about it, there were enormous similarities between the books, both in the way they were written and in the stories they told. Betty, certainly, left a bad taste in the mouth, as it was chock full of suffering and sadness. If you do read it, I'd suggest that go in expecting to be upset by it. As I wrote above, it's an unquestionably tough read. x

Absolutely loved your review, Andy. I’m currently reading this book for my Bookclub meeting and don’t know what to feel of it yet other than disturbance 😳.
Hey, Nilguen 👋😀 Yes, the book is definitely disturbing, and to be honest, that tone never really lets up. Now, with a few months' hindsight, I think I might have been a little generous with my rating. I'll keep it at five, but still, the book was not without its flaws, and it is these that I remember more than the power of McDaniel's writing. I look forward to hearing what you think of this one!
