Does it matter if I'm a latecomer to Malfi's work? Hell no. As is often said, better late than never.
I'd say that this story reminded me of those dark and difficult moments when growing up, the key experiences that shape the years well beyond childhood. The vulnerabilities of the characters, and the way this is written by Malfi, make me feel for the them as much as believe in them. They are a few friends bound by the haunted Barrows-like place they live near and sometimes play. What brings them together is the same place that tears them apart, but what also brings them together is sameness in being outcasts.
Bringing the characters back to that place of their childhood can be the make or break for a novel like this (there have been so many novels written in this manner). Do they remain relative as adults? Does the story still feel engaging? Yes and yes for Black Mouth and Malfi's writing of its characters, both as children and later when adults (the timeline consistently moves back-and-forth, which I've always thought works better than linear). There is an important protagonist, Dennis, who doesn't speak much due to his mostly unidentified disability, but even so he becomes the glue that binds the foursome and the story. Possibly, because of his disability he is not encumbered by the world like the others, and yet again he is more so. It could be a small thing for many, yet for me it was big in “feel” then becoming the crux of this novel.

Intriguing review, Ron. I like what I have read from Malfi, and this sounds like another good one. Your description of Dennis caught my interest.

The point of view narrative is never seen through Dennis, and yet I liked him a lot. Sometimes that happens. The writing is good, Zoey, so I will read more Malfi (and check out what you have read before doing so). Thanks!

Thank you! Yeah he's the kind of character that I can root for, Nika. Completely unselfish and good.

Had this one marked for the mountain already and your 4 stars reinforced it's place there. Great review, Ron. Looking forward to picking this up.
Ron, love to read your thoughts on this one. Particularly your insights on Dennis and him being the glue. I enjoy your observation skills as well as your analysis. Glad it was a 4 star for you.

Thanks, Mike. I really don't know if everyone will feel the same, but being my first Malfi I was impressed! I had almost purchased Come With Me (last years book), but held off. I shouldn't have - he does have a collection of novellas coming later this year that will be great for October.

I appreciate that so much Linda. I didn't want to say too much about Dennis cause of the spoiler territory, but did want to convey his part. Glad it was a good story for me too. Should not have had a doubt after the good reviews I've seen.

This sounds like a nostalgic read in many ways, what an absolutely incredible and insightful review Ron! I will have to try this author! 😊
Thanks Ron ……… a writer of horrors novels I’d not heard of before. This one is now on the list - Great review :)

True to the nostalgia, Ellie! It's the looking back on childhood, even when things are not so good for the characters. Made me feel for them. Thank you!

Thanks, Richard! After reading other reviews on Malfi's writing, I kind of knew I'd like it. With some authors, I don't feel the personal touch when getting to know a character, but no problem feeling it here.

Thank you, Kay! Now I know the complex characters you spoke of in your review, and wow there really were some tough moments too.

Wonderful review! I felt the same regarding Dennis. There was only one scene I didn't like in this novel--thus, a 4 star rating.

Thank you, Kathy. Definitely try if you enjoy a horror novel now and again. Good characters, but some tough scenes are included.

Thanks, Kimberly! If that scene involves Dennis, I know how you feel. It was a great book as an intro to Malfi's style.

Will probably have to skip this one after living through some real life... /thanks for letting me know.

Nice of you to say, Elyse - thanks!
PS. I really wanted to comment on your review of Fox & I (and others), but am unable to - probably because you're over the friend limit. You wrote a nice review. The story was a little dry in parts, but love for that Fox, or any animal got to me.

Loved your review, Ron! :) Your character analysis is always on the spot ... I'm a latecomer too but so far no regrets ..

Couldn't help but talk about the characters, Beata. Although I only named one, I liked each of them, and depth is what makes the difference. Thank you much!

Ron, the way your review is written it sounds like this book is more the psychological trauma of the past event rather than actual horror. Is that correct?

True Lisa, and also a little of both! There are elements of horror, but when your dealing with kids and wounds of their past (from outsider and insider family both), then they certainly carry the effects forward into their adulthood.

Hmm, I don't do horror, and I am intrigued by the psychological aspect. I will look into this one. Thank you.

I would put this in the horror genre, and it has some very graphic scenes, so it may not be what you're looking for. I haven't read his other recent book, "Come with Me", but it sounds more thriller than horror.
