Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases

This is an incredibly fascinating memoir by Paul Holes, detailing his career as a criminologist and his obsession with finding justice for those victims whose cases have gone cold. He is most famous for his work with the East Area Rapist (Golden State Killer) case.
Although I found the book decently fast paced and intriguing, I had a couple of issues that prevented me from rating it higher. One is personal--I both read and watched the TV series for I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer, so I was very, very familiar with the Golden State Killer case, how everything transpired over the years, and how the culprit was eventually caught and arrested. So much of this book felt like a re-hashing of that account, albeit from a different perspective, although Holes and Macnamara did collaborate so there is some overlap. The parts about how exactly the DNA sequencing took place was incredibly detailed and made me glaze over a bit.
Also, I know that life is messy and there are many cases out there that just aren't ever solved. Yet I was left wanting more from the cases that Holes worked on that were solved. Instead we get more of a personal account of the tolls his job and obsession with finding solutions took on his marriages and relationships. I admire his dedication to learning and to finding justice, but it's a bit depressing when we learn of the cost of that dedication.
Overall though, this is a gripping book and if you aren't as familiar with the ins and outs of the Golden State Killer case, you will be all the more captivated by the book and how that case was solved. Totally a worthwhile read, I am always enthralled with true crime and those who do the work to get those cases solved.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Worth reading, but for me it was so much information that I already had read.

Sounds interesting, However I have read and watched so much about Golden State killer it would be recycling old info. Great review!

There is some other interesting info here, but the bulk of it is focused on that case so it is definitely revisiting familiar territory.

I know the crimes are intriguing but I'd be interested in hearing on the personal tolls this took on him. Terrific review, Melissa!

His obsession with the cases (Golden State in particular) took a big toll on his life.

Great review, Melissa. Sorry to hear that most of it was stuff you already know, and the rest perhaps not what you have wanted entirely. A memoir is very unpredictable, from experience!

I am not familiar with the case. Isn't he the one they found based on DNA from a relative who did Ancestry? Or am I mixing my serial killers🤣. So many killers out there and it is really scary and revolting. It saddens my heart. Interesting review Melissa.

That's the one! It really was groundbreaking and there were so many victims--both horrible rapes and then he escalated to murder.

His life was very fascinating, but yes, I'm very over the GSK too.

It's a good read, don't get me wrong, I'm just burned out on the Golden State Killer.

Since the GSK crimes took place in my town I'll probably give this book a read eventually .But I too have read massive amounts about the case, even before he was caught, so may share your thoughts on repetitive info.

It's interesting to look at it from his angle, but I kind of skimmed over the details about the incidents because I had read them before.

Melissa...wonderful review! Sorry it left you wanting more info about cases that were successfully solved!✨

I have the ARC of this and will likely read it at some point, but I've been hesitating for the reasons you mentioned. I've read Billy Jensen's book too, so I fear it'll feel like a major rehash.

Some parts of it were very interesting, especially knowing his mindset and how he went about his investigations. But yes, it's a lot of rehash.

I know I wrote a comment before, but this was available immediately at my local library as an e-book. I'm hoping I enjoy this. I am a true crime junkie though, so I know all about the Golden State Killer. Looking forward to reading and seeing how I feel about this. I'm a little worried based on your points that it'll be disappointing. *shrugs* It's free though so I've got nothing to lose but time ;)

It has some really good parts to it, don't let my rating sway you. I found the story of his life and how he came to his career to be very fascinating, and there are other cases he talks about in the book that are interesting as well. You can't beat a library book!
