If history has taught us anything is that the moment one relaxes and starts to take for granted certain progresses, that's when those who wish to take them away will be sharpening their knives.

Indubitably. It's the "boiled frog" syndrome. If they take away the liberties slowly, one by one, no one will realise until it's too late to do anything.
