Archangel's Blade (Guild Hunter, #4)

Remember how I always say that I like alpha men as long as they don't cross that line into dick-dom? Well, Dmitri crosses that line and then dances in dick territory while flipping me off. Yeah, I pretty much wanted to kill him this whole book.
Yes. While I was reading this book, this seemed like the most rational response..
So, instead of focusing on Elena and Raphael during this book, we get to have a story about Dmitri, Rapael's second and a vampire. Dmitri has always been a total dick to Elena, and he is into pain and sex. I thought I would like to read his story....but I was wrong. I was really pissed off for most of the book. Why?
The love interest is Honor, a female Guild Hunter who was abducted and tortured by vampires in a basement for two months. She was raped, tortured, starved, and fed upon. It was so bad that she had to have surgery to fix the internal damage done to her body.
Really? She's the one who is chosen to be with the vampire who likes bondage and pain during sex? Cuz, for some reason, I think this is a bad idea...
But, it would be okay if he treated her with kindness and sensitivity (since he knew exactly what happened to her). Of course, he didn't. Instead, he pushed her, kept bringing up her pain, threatened her, told her that he was going to "have her", and even restrained her in the way she was restrained during her ordeal. All this while saying that he was planning on using her and then throwing her away. Call me crazy, but I find this a bit insensitive to victimized women.
So, I couldn't get into this story because it was impossible to believe that a woman who had been held prisoner and victimized in every way would be attracted to this guy who was just another abuser. If she was, she needed some serious psychological help because there is something really wrong about that. And, then the story took a weird route to try and make it all okay, but I didn't care for that either. It was like trying to justify a relationship that was obviously wrong by writing in this special circumstance that means it was meant to be. But, truly, the way Dmitri treated Honor was not okay at all. I just couldn't believe or understand the love story in this one.

I was just thinking how I'm not a fan of Dmitri's and now I find out he's book 4. Shit. I know I'm going to hate this. I hate dom/bdsm and basically all that Dmitri stands for. Blah.
Yeah, I hated Dmitri and his BDSM crap. I would say that you might want to consider skipping this one. The rest of them are so much better. :)
God damn, I love your reviews woman
Is Dmitri the vampire? He is the only one I actually liked. haha I only read book 1 though and he was a secondary character then.
This sounds awful. No thank you. I think I will stick with my choice to abandon this series after not liking book 1.

Aww, thanks, Lily! :)

Oh, I'm bummed you didn't like it, Shelly. I think the series gets better as you go, but if you don't like Elena and Raphael it may not be your thing. :)
Aww, thanks, Lily! :)

This sounds like a nightmare. I don't know why people would try to defend or romanticize this type of situation. This is one of the reasons I abandoned paranormal romance. Shit is scary. 0_0
Vicky, I think it's when books take that "Alpha Male" character too far. I've seen it in all kinds of romance novels and I hate it every time. Makes me all stabby and stuff.

Yeah I understand the appeal of the alpha male. Despite claiming to be an independent woman who takes no man's bs, I find myself attracted to some manly men. But it's as you say, when it's taken too far that's when I bring out my pitchfork.

Oh Jilly, I wish I had one of those little calanders with a quote from you for every day.
THANK YOU!!!! Fecking HATE Dmitri. I can respect the grief of his past and what's happened to him has turned him hard and cold, but the relationship with Honor and how he treated her and taunted her was FUBAR sick. FAIL, Nalini Singh! >:( Btw, love the "stabby" phrase! :)
Yes, Solaris!! I agree with everything you said in your review. This was the only book I hated in the series. I have loved all of the others. :)
Mel wrote: "I do NOT like Dimitri either and I HATE the strange twist. Great review."
I totally agree! It was my least favorite book in the series.
Thanks, Mel! :)

Fabulous review, Jilly.
I have just finished the first book- and my first by this author - and while I enjoyed the ride, I have to say it took me a long time to warm to Raphael. Dimitri- dick is too kind a word for him! Sadistic, egotistical, blood-sucking bastard is more like it. The story arc you described in your review sounds very twisted and, frankly, doesn’t make sense. I also hate it when alpha moves to dick territory. Thanks for the heads-up, Jilly. Might be a little selective as to which ones I read. Which do you recommend?

This was the worst one in the series. I think you are safe to skip this and still be up on what is going on in the world. Overall, it's a great series.
