Straight up and first off: I 100% read this because of karen; I probably would never have touched it, otherwise.
I should probably also admit that I went into this with very low expectations. It had been a self-published book, first, and I don’t do well with those. While I understood this had been picked up by a publishing house and was probably cleaned-up nicely, I still had reservations.
Fine. I’ll say it. At the risk of offending the author (which I think I’ve done in a couple of comment threads already), who I know reads these reviews because I keep seeing him pop up on all my friends’ reviews, I didn’t think this was going to be an enjoyable reading experience. I’ve already whined elsewhere about how horror isn’t scary to me so I usually don’t read it PLUS possession stories make me roll my eyes, as I am not a believer of demons or religion or anything else like that so I thought this could possibly get three stars but would probably wind up with two.
So I was wrong. Sue me (don’t actually do that, it would make for a terrible lawsuit)
The horror/possession aspect of the story did nothing for me for the reasons mentioned above. It was the psychological showcase that fascinated the hell out of me. SO MUCH FUN!
Here’s why but, first, to quote Karen Brissette, blogger: Beware of spoilers. I WILL SPOIL YOU

LIKES:
<3 Tremblay really got the sister thing down. Nailed it, I’d say.
<3 Marjorie and Merry used Richard Scarry books, ones that I own in real life!, to create worlds of their own, illustrating the power of imagination and the usefulness of books and stories.
<3 Karen called-out the stereotypical possession cliches: vomit and masturbation, virginal girls gone corrupted, the holiness of church men and their ability to take control which is all so stupid and I hate it so Thank you, Karen! Thank you!
<3 All the thoughts and questions I was left with concerning Merry and Marjorie, what was fabricated by whom and why and will the truth ever come to light? Dude, I’m going to be mulling this stuff over for weeks!
Nitpickiness:
>:{ Merry said she was watching “Teen Titans” while the grown ups talked in the other room only if this took place in 2000, then she was not watching that cartoon because “Teen Titans” didn’t start ‘til 2003. That could be Merry being unreliable again or it could be lack of fact-checking. Either way, it made me squinch my eyes with the “I don’t think so” look.
Unknown:
The creepy music at the end of the CD may be an off-kilter music-box version of “Gloomy Sunday,” which would be clever and cool, but, not knowing the song well enough, I can’t tell whether or not that is actually the case.
Wrapping it up:
Horror may not be my thing but psychological suspense sure is and this story definitely scratched that itch nicely.
Four strong stars for the story and one whole star for karen. Because I love her.

"So Karen Brissette just showed up and, remember, this is an audiobook so the narrator is doing her voice...OMG, karen, you need to get your hands on this. Why doesn't NYPL have this available on CD, Playaway, or eaudio? WHY? For the love of god, that's just ridiculous. They're the biggest library in the world (not really) Ok, maybe it's not available on Playaway or eaudio, yet, but it is available on CD."

YES! I heard her first blog post. I tried not to giggle with glee too much because I was at work.

He really got her character down."
We're such fangirls. I'd be embarrassed but...I'm not! I'll bet you're not, either!

Well...I'm not sure you'd enjoy this one, either, except for the parts where you're being read. You'll enjoy those if for no other reason than the pure trippiness factor. They've got an Audible sample up over on Amazon but it's from the beginning, not from a Karen part.

and i just realized - YOU'VE never even heard my voice!! it sounds like this: so this is me and now i am talking and this is what it sounds like in your ears. do you like my accent? it is scottish. strange because i am not of scottish descent or anything. who knows where it came from? and yes, in peter and the wolf, i would be played by the bassoon. did you expect my voice to be as deep as a whale? it is all very surprising!
Why didn't Paul do karen-voice? WHY? Does he not want to sell copies of his book? I feel that was a poor marketing decision on his part.
Of course I've never heard your voice. Except maybe there's a video out there with you talking that I have watched but it's so hard to remember.
Now that I know you have a deep bassoon Scottish-accented voice, though, I feel like I've heard it all my life because that all totally makes sense.

A few years back a friend who has since deleted did a big Soundcloud project where a bunch of people recorded themselves reading one our reviews so we could hear what each other sounded like. It was pretty cool.

Woah! Seriously?
That's amazing! And such a neat idea!
Did the friend delete their GR account or the Soundcloud files? Or all of it?

Deleted the account. I imagine at least some of the Soundcloud files are still there, although I don't know how one would find them.
One would just search Soundcloud for any remembered keywords or time periods and hope the friend left them up and available to the public.
Sensational review - I am wrestling with the same questions, but as for the Trinity of Adult Merry / 8yrs Merry / Karen...remember when Merry was little and could "do voices"? This kid has been adopting different personas right from the start. Her and her blood-red media room are wicked / bad / evil. LOVE this novel. So much brain candy
Ok, great review and YES! to all of your spoiler questions. I mean, gah! what is really true? We will never know. You even through ones out I hadn't even though of and now I really don't know what to think.
Second, I clearly don't know Karen as well as all of you. I've been following her for years, communicated back and forth some, etc. So I see some of Karen-Karen in blogger Karen, but not as much as I would have thought. She actually was my least favorite part *ducks* While Karen-Karen is hilarious, blogger Karen tries too hard. I don't know, maybe that was the narrator that makes me feel that way, she wasn't the best at voices except for Merry and Marjorie.
