3.5 stars

On paper (no pun intended), Warrior had all the ingredients for a 5-star read – exotic location, action and adventure, steamy romance, appealing characters. And it did deliver in all these areas. Yet, the overall package still somehow missed its mark for me.

There was plenty to like about Warrior. For a start, I loved both Gabriel and Thalia. Thalia was a strong and capable heroine who remained realistic. Being English born but raised in Mongolia by her father, she doesn’t resemble the gently bred English Rose you will often find in Victorian romance novels, but the author also ensured she never became one of those OTT kick-ass heroines you might find in Urban Fantasy, for example, either.

Gabriel was also a very endearing character, and it was wonderful to be reading this novel primarily from his perspective. A successful and talented career soldier, Gabriel is unsophisticated and inexperienced with gentlewomen, and finds himself drawn to Thalia, who is unlike any woman he has ever known. Gabriel is able to strike that difficult balance of needing to protect Thalia while recognizing and respecting her own capability.

The attraction and sexual tension between Thalia and Gabriel was very well done, and I really believed in them as a couple.

The author also did a great job with the Mongolian setting. She provided the perfect amount of detail regarding the landscape, culture and people to give a wonderful sense of place, which I was easily able to visualize.

The action, for the most part, was also well done, particularly the battle near the end. Again, the author provided a fantastic depiction of the setting and conflict, immersing the reader into the chaos.

That all sounds good so far, and it was, but the problem I found was how all these elements were strung together. There was something about the narrative connecting each individual scene that just didn’t work as well for me. The writing was almost, well, bland and it just didn’t grab me. It took me nearly twice as long to read this book as most others, because I just wasn’t compelled to pick it up, at least until the last third when things started happening in earnest.

I also don’t think the author did a good enough job of selling the overarching plot of the Blades of the Rose, the Heirs and the Sources – critical to the story. Having seen how talented she is in providing the perfect amount of detail to satisfy the reader in other areas, I think she really missed the mark here. The information we received was basic at best, sorely lacking in history and detail. As a result, I didn’t feel invested in or connected to that part of the story. I don’t know whether this was an intentional result of having mostly used Gabriel’s POV or not, but it didn’t work for me.

I will definitely be reading more of this series, because there was great potential and characterization in this one.

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* Quinn, You're reading all the books that I want to read, but just haven't got the time, and am just not able to read fast enough! LOL And I can't believe your library has this, too. You have an awesome library, Quinn. I'm jealous!

Quinn My library is only sometimes awesome, and that is because they transfer them from all over the state. This one came from out in the sticks somewhere, but no library has the next couple in the series yet. Does your library not do transfers?

I'm a bit nervous about this one - have heard such good things about that I'm expecting to be WOWed. Fingers crossed!

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* Hmm...it probably does do transfers, but it just seems like such a hassle. LOL Plus, I've been so bad with reading my library books. I hate having to read to a deadline! I have enough of deadlines at work. Also, my mood of what I feel like reading switches like the wind, and this year I've sent so many books back unread. So, if it's a series I think I may enjoy, and the library doesn't have the first in the series, I get the first book and then if I like it, I order the rest.

Hmm...Yes, I've seen lots of 5 star raving reviews on this series. *crossing fingers and toes* Maybe, just expect that it'll be OK! ^_^

Quinn I can totally understand the reading mood, Jayne! I try to have a couple of different genres on hand at a time so I at least have a choice. You'll probably find transfers isn't to big a hassle if you decide to do it down the track. I do all mine online - just enter the book I'm interested in, place a hold if it exists at any library in Victoria, and then it gets delivered to my local library automatically. I'd be lost without it!

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* Thanks, Quinn. I order all my library books through the online catalogue but I'll have to look into this whole transfer thing. At the moment, I ask a friend who lives in a different council area to help me borrow some books. Her library seems to have more selections that the 5 libraries that make up my council. ^_^

I have so many books at home that I should be reading and I have a few library books I need to read in the next month. But I do really want to read this one!

Lady Jayne *~*The Beach Bandida*~* Great review, Quinn! I'll be reading this next year.

Quinn Thanks, Jayne, I hope you enjoy Warrior when you read it next year. I've heard good things about the next one, too, so I'm looking forward to it.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Great review, Quinn! It seems I enjoyed this one better than you did, but I'm glad you liked it!!!

Karen ~ Divhine Quinn - I agree with your review. I really liked the characters, but for me, the middle of the book was really slow. I also had to force myself to read it, but I am glad I finished it. I will read the next in the series.

I didn't see your rating or review for this one Dhes, but it seems that most people have enjoyed this one more than I, although yes, I did like it and am looking forward to the next one.

Thanks, Karen. I loved the characters and some of the scenes, but yes, it was definitely missing something. It's nice to know I'm not alone!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I havent' posted my review yet, Quinn. I keep forgetting. LOL

Quinn LOL! I look forward to reading it when you remember!

Catherine Great review, Quinn! I know exactly what you experienced with this book. I didn't have it happen with this specific book, of course, but I have with others. I hate it because I see all the elements I would usually love, but some key element is missing to tie it all together. I can never really connect with it.

Hopefully the next one will be better for you! :)

Quinn Thanks, Catherine! Thankfully it doesn't happen often, and it hasn't put me off trying the next one!

I finally got it posted, Quinn.

Quinn Great, Dhes. I will go check it out!

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I thought your post was interesting, Quinn. How this isn't my genre of choice, but it worked for me, and it IS your genre of choice, but it didn't work for you.

Quinn No one was more surprised by this than me, UM! There were lots of elements I did like - the H/h, the setting, the action - but for some reason it just didn't come together well for me. I wasn't inspired to pick it up. Hoping for better luck with the next one.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish I've heard that book 2 is much, much better. Even my son likes it better... so I'm expecting to be damn near giddy when I read it, since I loved book 1.

Catherine UniquelyMoi *~*Dhestiny*~* wrote: "I've heard that book 2 is much, much better. Even my son likes it better... so I'm expecting to be damn near giddy when I read it, since I loved book 1."

That's what I've heard from everyone as well. Alas, I will once again be the opposite of everyone else. ;P

Quinn Didn't you like the second one, Catherine? It seems I was the opposite of everyone with Warrior, I was hoping to fall into line with Scoundrel! ;)

Catherine I did like it and I graded it well, but there was some click in the relationship missing for me. Most everyone else thought it was even better than this one.

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish LOL, Catherine!!! Oh well.

Quinn Interesting, Catherine. I hope it works better for me, then, than it did you!

Catherine I hope so too!

Quinn Thanks, Zosia. Yes, I felt exactly the same way! I couldn't quite put my finger on what exactly was missing, but something sure was. I loved the next one, though, FWIW.
