A number of child-angels gather around their mother up in heaven somewhere, each taking a seat on a fluffy cloud of perfection to eagerly await the forbidden story: How Mum and Dad Met.

"Mother!" the eldest, almost a teenager, chirps. "Tell us, please!"

A chorus of cherub voice cry out in agreement like the tinkering of old church bells.

"Yes, mother!"

"Tell us!"

"Please tell us!"

The mother laughs, her face a beacon of light and joy as she gestures for the children to sit quietly.

"Very well then, children," she replies serenely, gazing at each of her children in adoration. "Your father was an angel, and I was a Guild Hunter - which means that I hunted vampires for Angels. He had a very special job for me. Now, back in these days, your father was a very scary man. He almost killed me several times!" Elena chuckled at the joyous memories. "He was a cold-blooded, ruthless monster yet there was a strange, inexplicable attraction to him that I fought against. At first..."

The teenage daughter squeals involuntarily and interrupts her mother. "How romantic! I'm going to find a man who wants to kill me! Then I'm going to marry him!"

Elena looks concerned. "Erm-"

"Well," says her next eldest daughter, "I'm going to find a man that ACTUALLY tries to kill me, and then he's going to fall in love with me and then we'll get married."

Elena shakes her head in confusion. "Wait-"

"Hmph," scoffs the youngest daughter, not to be outdone. "Well, I'm going to find a man that wants to kill me, and then tries to kill me, and then changes his mind. BUT, while I'm with him I'm going to get so badly injured that he has to sacrifice who I am in order to save me so that we can still be together in some form or another!" she bursts out, almost turning red from the exertion.
"How romantic!" the other two croon before all three turn and begin to compete over who can come up with the most romantic scenario.
Finally, the youngest and Elena’s only boy chirps in, “Well, when I meet a girl, I’m going to keep reminding her how much better than her I am and then hit on her relentlessly, even if she shows not sign of wanting me at all!”
His older sisters stop. “You are such a sweetheart!” They swoon.
“Every girl’s going to want you!” another says with dreamy eyes.
“Stop!” Elena says, finally managing to settle the children down. “Son! You can’t act like that! When you find someone you love, you need to treat them with respect and be in partnership with them. Sure, you can be attracted to them and make advances-“
“I'm going to find a man that can't keep his hands off me, no matter how many times I tell him to leave me alone!" the first daughter says, interrupting her mother again as her face glowed in eagerly awaited anticipation.

"Well, I'm going to find a man that can't keep his hands off me, even if I SHOOT HIM!"

"Well, I'm going to find a man that can’t keep his hands off me, even if it could mean his own death!"

“Yeah?” the little boy says, his voice rising above the rest with his enthusiasm. “Well, when I meet the girl of my dreams and her association with me eventually gets her grievously injured, I’ll choose to die with her rather than continue my lonely and forever altered existence!”

Elena sits and stares at her squabbling daughters in shock and confusion until she eventually breaks in. "Girls! Girls! You need to find someone safe! Someone you can love, who loves you without threatening or manipulating you! Can't you see? These fantasies aren't healthy, girls!"

"Why not?" the eldest daughter asks in shock.

"Yeah, mother? Why can't we?" the middle child adds.

"It worked for you, didn't it?" her youngest asks.

“Don’t you see?” Elena begs. “It simply isn’t realistic or healthy to fantasize about these things! And son, your life doesn’t stop with the death of a woman! She wouldn’t want you to give up and dramatically sacrifice everything, just because she died!”

Her son scratches his head. “Why not?”

Then Arnold Schwarzeneggar rushes in and starts break dancing while telling everyone to, "Run! Run to the chopper!"

Before dashing out after her sisters, brother and Arnold Schwarzeneggar, the youngest daughter stops and reassures her mother, "It's okay, Mum. Really! We're bound to have a dues ex machina ending where everything works out perfectly. Just like you!"

Kat Kennedy We'll see!

message 2: by Eh?Eh! (new)

Eh?Eh! Hahaha! Er, so good book but bad message?

Kat Kennedy Yeah, a little like that, unfortunately.

Desperado ROFLMAO! You make me feel like a freaking masochist for giving this book 5 stars. But I totes want a man who will try to kill me! Especially if that man is Raphael!

Kat Kennedy I know, LL. I totally know.

I was reading this book thinking, "It's so wrong that women are attracted to men that want to kill them. So, so wrong. Damn, Raphael is hot..."

Desperado LMAO! Exactly. It's the wings, man. Having sex with an angel...that's like a sin. Yeah. Thank God I'm agnostic.

Kat Kennedy Yeah, I have no excuse. Damn it. Though in my defense, people even thought Angels were hot in the Bible. So, there. It's totally okay to look. Just not touch...

message 8: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH I will now quote a line from (of all things) Beautiful Darkness --

"Fact. Not killing the love of your life doesn't make you a hero."

I don't get the attraction of women to men that want to kill them - Do they think that they can CHANGE them? (the men that is?)

Kat Kennedy I don't get it either, not really. I think in fantasy, I understand. Because it's all about being SO desirable, SO irresistable that you have this super hot man who can't help himself.

But if I were faced with a guy who was so dangerous that I regularly felt that my life was threatened? Well, I think I'd have a hard time getting 'in the mood'.

Keep telling yourself that, chica. Nephilim, man.

AH, I agree. But to be fair, Raphael wasn't in love with Elena at the time. He just wanted to bone her into the cement. After they went all lovey dovey, he cut that "kill" bs out.

A hard time getting in the mood? I'd be too busy running away or planning my escape. (Although, come to think of it, if your dangerous guy had lets say, a sister who could predict the future, it would be rather difficult to bolt.)

Kat Kennedy Which is why I'd have to settle for continously boning a werewolf so that they can't see what I'm doing.

At the time.

I'd totes send them photos mid-bone just to rub it in their faces.

"Hey, if you want to come find me, now's your chance. I'm on my back now, but I'll be on my knees later when we go for seconds!"

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

That is probably the most random review I've ever read. Liked it even though I hated the book - well, the story as it went to be precise. Not the writing exactly...

message 14: by Tatiana (new)

Tatiana LMAO! This is very clever, Kat.

And clear this out for me. He beau is an Angel, who tried to kill her and then got it on with her? So, basically, here Angel=Vampire?

Kat Kennedy Yep! Vampire with wings.

message 16: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH Kat wrote: "Yep! Vampire with wings."

Aren't those called bats?

Kat Kennedy No. That's a common mistake, AH. Actually, bats are called bats. Vampires with wings are called Angels' Blood mythology.

message 18: by Bec (new) - added it

Bec fantastic review, but after all that is it worth reading?

Kat Kennedy Kind of, if you're looking for something super sexy - this is a book for you.

It's not a bad book. I honestly would have given it four stars if it had a better ending.

Kitten I hope Elena ends up with Illium! That'd be interesting. =X

Spider the Doof Warrior That review as so hilarious. You should write a book with just book reviews. I'd buy it.

Also, if the dude I had a crush on tried to kill me, this would totally shatter his attractiveness I think. People trying to kill you is one of the things that make people unsexy.

Kat Kennedy Yeah, that would make it hard for me too, Synesthesia.

message 23: by Heather (new)

Heather Kat, what an excellent story, erm, review :)

willaful I always have the sneaking worry that one day a happily married Anne Stuart "Ice" heroine will burn the toast and then she'll be toast... ;-)

Kat Kennedy Ha! I haven't read any of her novels but I can relate that to some of the other romance relationships I've read.

Sarah Hahaha I liked this book but love your review!

Amazon80 Great review. I’m continuing the series now with Archangel’s Consort. These books are really not doing it for me. Like most males in PNR/UF Raphael straddles that scary/sexy line. But when he says he’s going to F her senseless I’m actually afraid…no really. Ermm…pass? The few tender moments (even in book 2) are not enough to make him any less scary. Not hot.

message 28: by Estara (new)

Estara Yes, you very clearly spelled out why I don't read any more of this series. I still love the Psy-Changelings, though ^^.

Amazon80 I like that series but I think she needs to wrap up the war soon. I feel like the cool Psy Changeling over arching story line is getting lost.

message 30: by Estara (new)

Estara I'm a fantasy reader, too, so I like exploring the world and all the combination relationships. I like overarching plot (Meljean Brook does that well in her Guardians series, too, or Ilona Andrews in her Kate Daniels series). If I like the single pairings, I'm fine with wherever she takes me.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, these are more like bats but actually bats are better! I am still reading but its all rather sick. I am very disappointed as someone said its better than Twilight...HA!

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with you AH, I would be running too.

message 33: by Simca (last edited Mar 14, 2011 03:58PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Simca I live for your reviews Kat, they are some of the best reading material online. okay.. time to get on topic now. This is one of my favorite books, mostly because of the fact that the world was pretty unique and well, i like the story.
And if the angels are vampires with wings, then what are the vampire?

Emily I think I may like your review better than I liked Raphael & Elena's story! It kept me strangely engrossed but the ending was definitely unsatisfying, and I just can't get behind the idea to take the pair into future books.

message 35: by Zeltronica (new)

Zeltronica lol omg, I just came across your review of "fallen" after reading it, and googling "The Book Fallen Was A Peice Of Shit" to see if anyone had ranted about it. They hadn't but the goodreads page came up and I had to comment on your entirely exact summaries of both books. I really wish I'd checked out some reviews before wasting my life on the ever fucking present zomg am girl wif feebles laydee brains pls pls even for some insane reason I do seem strong and totally capable in many other aspects of my life pls pls treat me like shit and try to/consider/ hurt/kill/accidently hurt/kill me as it is the sign of true, true, codependent abusive love that the masses lap up and the seeds so deeply and far scattered that I even read them in the first place hoping 'oh It'll get better...right.. right?!?!?"

Vasya hahaha, I read this review ages ago, but I forgot about which book it was about... thank God I read it again, because it made me laugh so much and at the same time give this book a "no-no-I'm not-gonna-read-you" dance :)

message 37: by Hira (new)

Hira LOLz.Loved your review!!!!!

Vasya wrote: "hahaha, I read this review ages ago, but I forgot about which book it was about... thank God I read it again, because it made me laugh so much and at the same time give this book a "no-no-I'm not-g..."

enjoyed reading it again too.

message 39: by Chisom (new) - added it

Chisom lmao i can't beleive i just saw this now! now i feel like not reading the book :D

Paxnirvana Thank you for this review so I don't have to do one myself. ^_^ Unlike you, I couldn't get past the "kill = sexy" thing to even give it 3 stars. Wing-porn is not enough.

papalbina LMAO xDDDD i love your review *___*

message 42: by Ani (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ani Gonzalez I loved this review. I will definitely read the book now. I must find out exactly how many times Raphael tried to kill Elena.

Siddhee Man! Awesome review! BANG ON!!

Nigina i like the book,, but this story was so irresistible funny! Normally i would have been so offended but this story is so f*cking good!

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

See, you should publish this! It's perfect: you can head it under PNR and even put in an extra little label that says satire and you are all set. Instant sell :D
I'm staying away from this book

Amanda The Book Slayer That was funny!

Gabriella BRAVO!!! ^_^ Excellent!!!

message 48: by Mel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mel I actually love this book, but I just read your review and couldn't stop laughing, so great! When you distill down their relationship, it really isn't the healthiest one.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

holy crap. you gotta have a lot of time on your hands... i suggest you get out more

message 50: by Mich (new) - added it

Mich Seriously- this was a hilarious review. I was just laughing for like 5 minutes. I still don't know if I should start this series or not though. Did you continue reading them after your failed attempt at book 1 ??
