I enjoyed the basis of the story: following a horse from it's birth through it's life and the people in it's life. I liked how the author included different narratives and went back and forth with timelines. I also appreciated her research into the world of race horsing, art, and the preservation of history by the Smithsonian. I just found the "truths" of our history's past (and present, it seems) very sad and when there are deaths of animals and the carnage that went along with the civil war and the injustices of slavery, I really could not wait to finish the book. Even the end was tough. It is a beautiful tribute to an outstanding race horse and to those who loved and cared for him. ...more

The long chapters are not my favorite but each was filled with so much descriptive content it made the reading go pretty fast for me, a rather slow reader. I absolutely loved the story of Richard (Ricki) Wilde finding herself and following her passion by moving away from her toxic family. Then, learning about Ezra and their two lives colliding was like fireworks! I love how the author integrated plants, music, arts, leap year, and a little bit of magic into the storyline. I would be so happy to see this made into a movie. (I need to hear Ezra's song to Ricki) ...more
