The stiff, straight-and-narrow, Andrew Darlington is on the next case. Ruthless as he was in the previous case as an outsider, this time he's going undercover. Into an unexpectedly familiar gang family, where there's a lot of control and unhealthy dynamics under a merciless matriarch. Lu was bought out of the life she'd been sentenced to, but it's no more freeing. The tenderness of her heart to the gospel evolves. Unforeseen circumstances force the two of them together. And the theme of trusting God, not ourselves, for justice and righteousness comes through.
More mature themes in this book. I'd recommend it for those who enjoy historical christian fiction. ...more

It’s always fun when minor characters get their own stories, and each one in this collection ties into the author’s other series. Downfall was my favorite. The family feud between the Pierces and the Quinns, first introduced in Blackburn’s Never Fall Again, resurfaces here. The Quinn family’s loyalty and protectiveness made me laugh—it’s a little overbearing but still endearing.

One night, a hiker stumbles upon her clinic, near death, and she spends the night caring for him—just as she does for all her patients. As he recovers, he begins helping around her property, and their friendship blossoms. While he has plans to complete the trail and move on, each day draws them closer. He’s determined to fulfill a promise he made, and she’s committed to one she made to herself. It’s a sweet read, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the series....more

The Nightmare has taken over Elspeth. Ravyn is struggling with guilt about not getting to her sooner and trying to unite the cards with the Nightmare's help. The POV in this book shifts to Elm and his journey taking over for his prince brother. I felt a lot of suspense in this book with all the characters and not knowing what was going to happen. I did not like Ione at first, I was pretty distrustful of her intentions. I just kept wondering when would everything finally be made right.
I also was a little begrudging about the ending scenes, felt like there could've been more time unfolding what happens with Elspeth, we'd seen her transform as the Nightmare took over, would've been nice to "see" the ending unfold a little more. (Maybe because I'd been waiting for this moment since the first pages). A satisfying ending overall though.
Again this is written for general market and has some cursing and an open door scene....more

Elspeth is infected with magic as a child. In this world, magic can only be used safely with through the use of cards: a maiden for beauty, a scythe for controlling someone's actions, a black horse for strength in battle, etc. So those who develop an infection are usually arrested by the armed guard and taken from their families. Hers was hidden for years.
She absorbs the magic of one of the cards, the Nightmare. This presence of the Nightmare (whose identity is only revealed later) both protects and distresses her. It seems weird at first, the voice in her head, but there's a bigger game plan going on than she can see, which unfolds further in book 2.
The goal of the king is to unite all the cards, which will free the region from the deathly magic mist. But there's more than one player looking to unite the cards. The cliff-hanger at the end ensured I'd grab the next book. I have a thing with resolved endings. ...more

Girl trapped in her car on a cliff, develops a bond with the off-duty officer who stays with her, distracting her through the moment, leading to trust and vulnerability. Oh wait, this is his brother's new girlfriend. His brother who recently divorced and hasn't been himself, and finally starts to get back to normal because she's in his life. Cooper tries to stuff the feelings he has, avoids her, but circumstances keep putting them back together. And she likes him too. She's told him things she hasn't told his brother.
Just real messy.
And then it explodes.
I really enjoyed this story and watching the awkwardness unfold and then the restoration that takes place between family. ...more

She can't ask for forgiveness enough times from anyone to be accepted. But she does her thing on her family's orchard. Until money gets tight. And her old flame, Wyatt, returns, not for friendship but with judgement and condemnation. (Okay, I'm not sure I ever really got over his attitude and actions). But as they investigate old artifacts found on her property, history and mystery come to light.
There's a lot of unknowns about what's really going on in the community and from the past, but it's a satisfying ending to the story....more
