The language is anachronistic with the time period, but it didn’t take me out of it and felt like a really good decision to prioritize humor and the audience over the setting. There’s only one really jarring use of meme-age, but it’s at the beginning. I suck, so I did laugh really hard, but obviously that could be odd putting for fellow grumpy adults.
It’s not a retelling, but obviously it’s arthuriana, and the little in-jokes and references to the greater arthurian canon really made my lil heart sing. Shoutout to both Gawain and Elaine for their appearances making me yell out loud, love those kids.
I can’t promise you will also enjoy this as much as I did, because it was Built For Me (okay, for gay teens, but hello, i am here also). It was so earnest, funny, full of friendship and kindness and dunking on heteronormativity. I think it’s well worth your time. ...more

8/27/22: 3.5, extemely boring except for the parts that were incredible. tightly plotted, witty, and full of bones, but if i had to read another dinner party scene or intentionally confusing second-person POV chapter without the promise of a good ending i would have DNFed it...more

when i was reading reviews of this before i decided to jump in, i saw a review say that it was "emotionally cold" and "distant," partly due to the writing style and partly due to the nature of a translated text. after finishing it, i don't know how we read the same text. han kang's human acts is an emotion — the grief of dong-ho's mother, the helplessness and anger of the prisoner, the fear of the former factory girl, the overwhelming love the characters have for one another, for their families and friends. especially dong-ho's mother, because christ, i needed to lie flat on the floor for her chapter.
the book really focuses on death, the concept of a soul and an "after," which i think like kang's prose in the vegetarian, elevates this into a text that will sit in my mind for the rest of my life. one chapter is told from the perspective of a soul trapped in a decaying body. another reckons with what a "good" death is. another with suicide. it's heavy. trigger warning for everything.
i have a lot of thoughts, but mostly i feel that this book is so valuable. I think it should be taught, or at least pushed at academics who like to study tragedies. fiction is so fucking important. i am a han kang devotee now ...more
