While the premise of the book did sound intriguing to me, Southern, gothic, insanity and murder it wasn't quite what I was expecting. There is a plot but it deviates from it greatly and starts rambling for pages on end making it hard to follow. I didn't connect with the main character, Elaine Chauvier, who really was flighty and talks to and gets advice from her dead grandfather. Full of mystery and intrigue I just didn't make a connection with the story.

When you are the mother of seven children as Charlotte is life will never be easy for you. In this saga we see Charlotte and James children growing up. Mining is a way of life for the men and boys of age in this small village. Charlotte sees so many of the men brought from underground with the life sucked from the from mine cave-ins . Being that her husband and some of her sons work in the mines she wants more for her son Jack. With the encouragement of his teacher he takes scholarly classes and it gladdens his mother's heart. She has her hands full with other other children, Amy has a near fatal burn from bathing water and is laid up for months. An expense that the family can barely afford. This story follows the families daily life through work, trials and tribulations. It sees the children with Charlotte matchmaking for them when they are old enough. Tragedies and good times alike. I really enjoyed this book and I need to read the rest of the books in the series to see how the saga continues. Her newest voyage in writing has left quite an impression on me and will stay in my memory for a long time. Let me start out by saying I have never been to Tarpon Springs or even Florida but Tarpon Springs is now where I want to go do some fun historical research. Right from the start of the book I was immersed in the story, the smell of the ocean, the calls of the divers, the clanks of their diving suits, feeling the pull of the rope, the fear and anticipation of that next dive for sponges, the authentic Greek food. This book was absolutely fabulous and it challenged me as well. When a book challenges me historically I love it because it means I want to find out more about what the author is writing about. In this case looked up sponging, which I have never read about before. I also was interested in reading about the trauma divers can cause themselves by rising to the surface to quickly after a deep dive. I have heard of "the bends" before but wasn't quite sure what it was. I felt as though I were there during this whole book experiencing it, perfect descriptions! My favorite character was definitely, Nico Kalos who was in charge of the diving team. Least favorite character was for sure, Adelfo Pappas, what a sneaky slimeball. He's all for himself though he tries to make you feel as though he's on your side. I was impressed with how the author made the male characters sound and think as male characters rather than as a female author would think. I love the forward thinking of the time period as well in that the town's doctor and town's lawyers are both females. Bravo! The three spinsters sisters are a bit annoying but where a hoot, loved having them in the story. I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to see what Judith puts out for us next. Highly recommended! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGally/the author. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own....more

A beautiful inspirationThis is the second book in the Amish of Pontotoc series. Amy Lillard really knows how to write a book that keeps my attention. A beautiful inspirational story that has heartbreak in it but before the story ends it becomes heartwarming. Lillard gives us a real sense of the Amish, they like us are not perfect but with faith, hope, prayer and God's wisdom mistakes are forgiven and wrongs are turned around with understanding and compassion. This book gave me a beautiful sense of well being and inspired me to want to do better in life. Readers of Amish fiction will really enjoy this inspiring and hope filled journey. How would you feel if you were born a slave woman and had been one your whole life? Upon your master's death your mistress set you free and traveled with you and your 3 children to Pennsylvania, a free state. Upon reaching Pennsylvania while in a "safe house" with your children a horrifying thing happened to you. You were kidnapped by your mistresse's nephew and dragged back to Virginia, a slave state. Before you got there you were abused, manhandled, starved, dehydrated all while proclaiming your innocence. With the help of your mistress you take your kidnapper to court. At this time in history it was unheard of for a woman let alone a former slave woman to take a man to jail. What lawyer would want to represent her? This book was just amazing and once again when I find a historical book that fascinates me I had to find out more about this woman and her life than was covered. If you enjoy reading historical books about incredibly resilient women you will enjoy this. I know I sure did. I have read almost all of the V.C. Andrews books since the first one published when I was 12. This is the 3rd novella in the Girls of Spindrift seriesI have read almost all of the V.C. Andrews books since the first one published when I was 12. This is the 3rd novella in the Girls of Spindrift series. I have met 3 of the girls so far as this is the third book. Spindrift is a special school for students who just don't fit in at a regular school as they are more advanced than the teachers there with their IQ of 180 or higher. Yeah, these are not the run of the mill teens but they may just be too advanced to participate in normal conversations or social media. We meet Mayfair is this novella, she along with Corliss and Donna that we met in the previous novellas are called the Supremes at school. The girls are tired of being kept separated from "normal teens" so they set out to change that. Jogging one day they see a hole dug under a fence that separates the school from outside world. Knowing they will get into a lot of trouble if caught they slip under anyways and discover the outside world is not what they expected it to be . I've enjoyed reading the Abbot brother's stories and this time it's Mack's turn. When Ella buys a share of the Abbot brothers garage Mack is anything but a happy camper. Ella doesn't exactly like or trust Mack either but who can blame her. Coming out of a non-trustworthy marriage and abusive husband who can blame her for not trusting men or wanting to be involved with them. Mack has a lot of baggage he needs to sort through as well. What starts out for them as physical attraction on both their parts becomes a mutual trust and respect as they get deeper into a relationship. I enjoyed seeing the softer side of Mack as he brought out the best in Ella. I enjoyed seeing the characters in previous books brought back in this book and even the sweet dog, River. Very enjoyable book and I look forward to reading more books in this series. Pub Date 31 Jul 2018 | I was given a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's Press through NetGalley. I love a book that challenges me. How did this one challenge me? It had information about the cholera epidemic of 1833 which challenged me to look up more information about it. I love when a book does this. The author has evidently done her research on the historically rich book. Amazingly this book is based on true facts. Louis, the slave was an amazing person. The book was an emotional one, Em has had such a struggle in life. Is getting a gunshot ever a good thing? In this young woman's case it was. The back cover with the train on it plays an important part in this story. The book comes full circle in the end. The story was good but fell a little flat in my opinion. I was especially disappointed to see after the hard life Em has that the outcome wasn't better when she searched for Lucy, her sister. Em is a very resilient young woman who has had so many hard knocks in life but warms quickly to the kindness shown to her by the family that took her in and the town's people. The town of Azure Springs will welcome you in with memorable character's . I was also disappointed to not see more of a romance here. Another disappointment was the main character didn't have much self confidence constantly calling herself plain and ugly. She was strong in other ways though to have such resilience to went she went through. Pub Date 03 Jul 2018 I received a complimentary copy from Revell through NetGalley. With my son being a police officer I thought this sounded like an interesting book to read. This is a nonfiction account of personal stories of people With my son being a police officer I thought this sounded like an interesting book to read. This is a nonfiction account of personal stories of people that have spent time in jail just a paragraph or two on each person and how they dealt with the brought up topic. Rich or poor, male or female, young or old, innocent or not stories are here of many people and the utter loneliness, feelings of despair and thoughts of suicide seem to be the way some of the inmates deal with long term incarceration. These aren't stories of just USA prisoners but around the world. Some other countries have a much worse prison system than we do in the USA including malnourished prisoners and being afraid to fall asleep for being beaten . The violence is out of control. Upon release these prisoners couldn't adjust to life on the outside and in many cases they got themselves locked up again within 6 months. Very harsh life for these people and interesting reading. Life on the inside is nothing like what you see on tv shows. Pub Date 19 Jul 2018 I received a complimentary copy of this book from Jessica Kingsley Publishers through NetGalley. Featuring a dual timeline we continue to read about Mary Coffin Starbuck's life in the 17th century ,that was written in a journal that was found, while also reading about the 19th century in the main story. Read about the beginnings of the Quakers in America on Nantucket Island. You will get your fill in this story with love lost and found, hope, betrayal and shocking revelations that come to the light of day. I loved reading the true facts in the back of the book that this story is based on. Very compelling read you will want to come back to more than once. In this one it takes place in Galveston,Texas and I loved the research the author did for this book and the factual information she included in the back of the book. Galveston sounds like a beautiful place I'd love to go visit. This historical is set in 1880. This was a quick fun read with a mystery and a sweet budding love. The character development was there and it was hard to put down. Looking forward to reading more in this series! I've read massive amounts of historical fiction books in my lifetiThis is the first book I've read by Joanne Bischof and what an introduction it was! I've read massive amounts of historical fiction books in my lifetime but this one is unlike any I've read before. The author takes us inside the head of the main male character, Thor. Now Thor is one of the three brothers Aven came over from Norway to take care of. She thought the brother's were children in need of care. Upon arriving from her voyage across the ocean she sees they are grown men living in rural 19th century Appalachia. Thor is the complex one, his family runs a hard cider liquor business and he is an alcoholic and deaf as well. He is able to sign but not able to speak and feels alienated and alone, full of frustration about not being able to express himself fully. Alcohol changes who he is when he is under the influence and he doesn't like who he has become. He is a very complex man. The struggle is real as he battles the demons inside him to give up alcohol. Aven makes every effort she can to show Thor she cares as she sees the battles raging inside of him alcoholism, depression, loneliness, frustration and the effort to make his wants and needs known. The bond between the three brothers is touching and real. The three would do anything for each other and do. Will this broken man find wholeness and healing or will hard drink win the battle raging within him? What about Aven, two men desire to be her one and only, Thor the one who has cast his spell upon her in a quiet efficient way or Haakon, who is bold and passionate? Will her being there cause an irreparable rift between the brothers? This book goes where other Christian historical novels dare not to go. It's in your face, realistic,a breakthrough and I loved it! I have a lot of catching up as I now need to read all of the rest of this author's books!
