I know David Day has a level of pariah in the Tolkien World. Mostly because his "encyclopedias" do not give the most accurate description of Tolkien cI know David Day has a level of pariah in the Tolkien World. Mostly because his "encyclopedias" do not give the most accurate description of Tolkien characters and places. It's difficult to tell where Tolkien ends and Day begins.
This book has present in part the same issue, but thankfully works different. Basically this book has entries for characters, places, battles, etc, but the generally include 3 pieces of information. 1) the Character description by David Day, 2) the illustration by several artists 3)a comment or description by the artist.
1)The David Day description basically have all the problems I mentioned in the first paragraph of the review. Lots of what David thinks presented as Tolkien, BAD BAD BAD
2)The illustration go from ok to great depending on the artist, but in general they are all worthwhile.
3)Descriptions by artist are great, they might talk about the illustrations they made, about their Tolkien experience, about their techniques. In general they are informative and intereting.
So there you have it. Get this book for the art and the artist. Ignore David Day....more
