Four chaplains (Jewish, Catholic, Protestant) worked to hand out lifejackets and organized the evacuation of young soldiers to limited lifeboats. They graciously gave their spots to others. Charles W. David Jr, an immigrant cook on the coastguard cutter, (when everyone else refused) volunteered to enter the freezing waters again and again, saving dozens of men.

I found it long-winded, aggravating, and a bit pretentious. Not only that, it turns out he plagiarized more than half of the book. He apparently got "permission" to use a real woman's journal from the 1800s. But then he fantasizes what MAY have happened in areas (decades) where her journal is silent. If that's not plagiarism, then it's in extremely poor taste and morally unacceptable. Imagine having lived a life and someone in the future finds your diary, then re-writes your entire story, adding rumor, innuendo, and sexual embellishment. It's intellectually dishonest! And we revere this author and give him a Pulitzer? Shameful. Stegner is a great writer in terms of laying down interesting prose. That's pretty much his only redeeming value, other than he's recommended by David McCullough (which is the only reason I picked up this book). This is clearly one of those cases where it considered "in" to to say you like Stegner. Well, the emperor had NO CLOTHES!...more
