kinda decent. only good part was polonius made me laugh with his "i'm using as concise words as possible" but then he's inserting so much fluff like "kinda decent. only good part was polonius made me laugh with his "i'm using as concise words as possible" but then he's inserting so much fluff like "night is night" and "day is day."
movie made it better but i still can't understand shakespeare language....more
i thought it would be really hard to understand because it's a classic, but i genuinely enjoyed this! (this is a recur so much better than i expected!

i LOVED pip in the beginning because he was just so wholesome, witty, and funny... but then when he got money he got so corrupted which was so sad... but i know that's the premise of the book.
a lot of the things were so sad to see pip go through, and honestly such a real portrayal. (view spoiler)[when he met estella and miss havisham for the first time, he suddenly become insecure of his "coarse hands" and "thick boots" which he had never thought about before. before, he was satisfied with his life, but now that other people were criticizing him for his "lowly" appearance, he was suddenly insecure and kept comparing himself to others. it was so sad to see this but that is unfortunately the reality of our society, which is crazy because this was written in the 1800s and is still so relevant. (hide spoiler)]
my favorite characters were definitely wemmick (he gives such good advice and is so lively!) and herbert (he is such a good friend and so so wholesome, always there for pip) and joe (felt so bad for him when Pip was being rude - he was a good man throughout the book).
the only thing i didn't really about this book was the satis house because i didn't feel like it was very realistic, since it was portrayed as almost magical/frozen-in-time, which just felt not that real to me, when the rest of the book was very real. hmm.. maybe i also didn't like estella but that was supposed to be a core premise so i guess i can take it. but pip's obsession with her seriously needs to stop. agh.
>> a book that exceeded my expectations (see what i did there?) 4.0 stars...more
i definitely appreciated nina so much more this time... she's so wholesome and strong and willing to so so good as always... now onto the second book!
i definitely appreciated nina so much more this time... she's so wholesome and strong and willing to sacrifice herself for the team. and now that i think about it, i love inej so much more too.
jesper and wylan are the cutest tho! they bring so much humor and made me smile so many times :)
tbh, kaz has the least personality, but i guess he's still interesting because i love seeing like his thought process and tips/tricks on like stealing and things (it's a very diff pov that i'm used to, so it's quite intriguing to learn about that stuff!)
matthias honestly doesn't have that much personality either, but i do think he got some character improvement! yay!

I haven't read good fantasy in a while... but wow that was good.
I tried reading this book a couple years back, but I was unable to get past the first couple of pages because I got too confused. But lately, I've been reading extremely uninteresting books that have no plot whatsoever and seem to drag on forever. I figured we needed a change. I needed a fast-moving fantasy novel that would hook me from start to finish, and I decided to pick this one up again because everyone seems to like it.
I got past the first chapter with no problem this time. I actually pretty much understood all of it. Oh yeah, I think it's pretty important to note that I didn't read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, so this is my first book by Leigh Bardugo.
I thought I would have a hard time getting to know all six characters, but their names and personalities came so naturally, not a problem at all. I do think they had somewhat of a flat or static personality at times, but they were still the perfect characters for this book. The plot and scheming got confusing at times, but it wasn't imperative that I understood every technical detail with the plans the mastermind Kaz came up with, so I just kept reading and rolled with it.
I think I lacked on the world building because I didn't read the series beforehand, but that's okay since I still understood the book and caught on to all the terms fairly quickly.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed how action-packed and exciting this book was, and I'm so excited to read the second book!! Also very glad that I found a book I liked after a long reading slump.
