Not baseThe False Magic Kingdom is a collection of interconnected novellas. I loved the first one which is one of the best books I've read this year. Not based because of the story but because of the writing. The novella is a mise en abyme that folds all the chapters into something new, to reveal itself at the end. I was left speechless and I take quite a moment to take it all in.
However, the rest of the cycle is less interesting. The next parts focus on the story itself, which is dark and weird but mainly very obscure and difficult to understand.
The cycle ends up to be a mise en abyme itself, using the same mechanism than in the first novella. It was a great ending but I find the first novella was enough....more

I had a blast reading The Rats ^^ I was lurking on Amazon for the ebook for a long time and a Halloween promotion came out so I finally bought it after looking for it for so long!
And The Rats deserved all that patience! I've already read many Herbert's so I had some insight on what to expect but I didn't anticipate such a book! It works from the first chapter to the last. The pace is fast, without a single latency.
I came to understand that it is one of the first books in the splattepunk genre and it certainly has vibes. However, it is a fair read and I who dislike that genre didn't feel that much the genre's main markers as of today.
The Rats is a real pleasure to read and I'm happy I have finally read it!...more

I'm happy I did!
The bizarro part is obvious but the central element is not about the gross and the weird. Those two serve to emit a sensitive story. It is surprisingly nice and gentle. I liked the pacing and the tone, got into the story all along.
I somehow feel relaxed. It's a pleasant lingering feeling after such a read ^^...more

It is easy to read and straight to the point but lacks some more details imho. Even if the book is aimed at developers & the like, the topics are too focused on software-software-software. We tend to read and write much more technical documentation than just what is strictly related to our developments and products....more

Not at all what I expected: I was going for a bizarro retelling of Alice and I ended up with fanfiction and a more than real followup story.
Exeunt AliNot at all what I expected: I was going for a bizarro retelling of Alice and I ended up with fanfiction and a more than real followup story.
Exeunt Alice is a really good fanfiction job. We've got all the markers from what to expect of Lewis Carroll.
However, the 88 pages are really just half of it: the other half of the book is notes and pseudo analysis of the short story. That was going way too far in the imitation ...more
