David Mitchell
“To enslave an individual troubles your consciences, Archivist, but to enslave a clone is no more troubling than owning the latest six-wheeler ford, ethically. Because you cannot discern our differences, you assume we have none. But make no mistake: even same-stem fabricants cultured in the same wombtank are as singular as snowflakes.”
David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

Karen Traviss
“Gar taldin ni jaonyc; gar sa buir, ori'wadaasla. (Nobody cares who your father was, only the father you'll be.) - Mandalorian saying”
Karen Traviss, Order 66

Dave Matthes
“I see things in windows and I say to myself that I want them. I want them because I want to belong. I want to be liked by more people, I want to be held in higher regard than others. I want to feel valued, so I say to myself to watch certain shows. I watch certain shows on the television so I can participate in dialogues and conversations and debates with people who want the same things I want. I want to dress a certain way so certain groups of people are forced to be attracted to me. I want to do my hair a certain way with certain styling products and particular combs and methods so that I can fit in with the In-Crowd. I want to spend hours upon hours at the gym, stuffing my body with what scientists are calling 'superfoods', so that I can be loved and envied by everyone around me. I want to become an icon on someone's mantle. I want to work meaningless jobs so that I can fill my wallet and parentally-advised bank accounts with monetary potential. I want to believe what's on the news so that I can feel normal along with the rest of forever. I want to listen to the Top Ten on Q102, and roll my windows down so others can hear it and see that I am listening to it, and enjoying it. I want to go to church every Sunday, and pray every other day. I want to believe that what I do is for the promise of a peaceful afterlife. I want rewards for my 'good' deeds. I want acknowledgment and praise. And I want people to know that I put out that fire. I want people to know that I support the war effort. I want people to know that I volunteer to save lives. I want to be seen and heard and pointed at with love. I want to read my name in the history books during a future full of clones exactly like me.

The mirror, I've noticed, is almost always positioned above the sink. Though the sink offers more depth than a mirror, and mirror is only able to reflect, the sink is held in lower regard. Lower still is the toilet, and thought it offers even more depth than the sink, we piss and shit in it. I want these kind of architectural details to be paralleled in my every day life. I want to care more about my reflection, and less about my cleanliness. I want to be seen as someone who lives externally, and never internally, unless I am able to lock the door behind me.

I want these things, because if I didn't, I would be dead in the mirrors of those around me. I would be nothing. I would be an example. Sunken, and easily washed away.”
Dave Matthes

Adam Rex
“The Boov frowned. 'Everybodies always is wanting to make a clone for to doing their work. If you are not wanting to do your work, why would a clone of you want to do your work?”
Adam Rex, The True Meaning of Smekday

Donna Lynn Hope
“Only strong women, and they seem to be rare, can handle a frank and direct woman who doesn't sweet-talk or need others to nerve her. You can identify the easily intimidated because they need a gaggle of like-minded clones to back them up when they feign offense, which is merely a guise for their insecurity.”
Donna Lynn Hope

David Marusek
“Why do we need so many people on Earth? I ask you. What are they good for? They live out ludicrous lives of pointless desperation. Ninety-nine percent of the human population is so much wasted resources. Stubborn vermin, we humans are.

Granted, in the past, the unwashed masses were necessary. We needed them to till our fields and fight our wars. We needed them to labor in our factories making consumer crap that we flipped back at them at a handsome profit.

Alas, those days are gone. We live in a boutique economy now. Energy is abundant and cheap. Mentars and robotic labor make and manage everything. So who needs people? People are so much dead white. They eat up our profits. They produce nothing but pollution and social unrest. They drive us crazy with their pissing and moaning. I think we can all agree that Corporation Earth is in need of a serious downsizing.
...
The boutique economy has no need of the masses, so let's get rid of them. But how, you ask? Not with wars, surely, or disease, famine, or mass murder. Despots have tried all these methods through the millennia, and they're never a permanent solution.

No, all we need to do is buy up the ground from under their feet -- and evict them. We're buying up the planet, Bishop, fair and square. We're turning it into the most exclusive gated community in history. Now, the question is, in two hundred years, will you be a member of the landowners club, or will you be living in some tin can in outer space drinking recycled piss?”
David Marusek, Mind Over Ship

Will Advise
“The way to be invisible - is to truly be imaginary. But since you cannot imagine yourself, you have to clone your imagination into being an image of yourself. Imagine that.”
Will Advise, Nothing is here...

“FRUITS AND NUTS

Keep jumping around them like monkeys.
The clones,
Commercialized zombies,
And the TV junkies.
Keep throwing berries,
Twigs,
And nuts at them.
Until they wake up
To see what's up
And figure out why
We're laughing at 'em.”
Suzy Kassem, Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem

Darion D'Anjou
“Escape is very difficult to negotiate, underwater.”
Darion D'Anjou, Genetika

James Smythe
“That we were made in his image. This is the next stage: after clones and gene therapy: we are changing what that image is.”
James Smythe, The Machine

“Russell T. Goode was so dominant in the Olympic Power Wrestling tournament that he fought himself in the final.”
Michael S. Hunter, Beat Down 1 - Clones

Jo Walton
“Elms are dying all over the place, it's Dutch elm disease. [...] It came from America on a load of logs, and it's a fungal disease. That makes it sound even more as if it might be possible to do something. The elms are all one elm, they are clones, that's why they are all succumbing. No natural resistance among the population, because no variation. Twins are clones, too. If you looked at an elm tree you'd never think it was part of all the others. You'd see an elm tree. Same when people look at me now: they see a person, not half a set of twins.”
Jo Walton, Among Others

Steven Pinker
“As many political writers have pointed out, commitment to political equality is not an empirical claim that people are clones.”
Steven Pinker

Stewart Stafford
“Double You by Stewart Stafford

Life can make a twin of you,
When you occupy the same air,
You can't feel them twinning you,
Until your doppelgänger's there.

You're twice the Sapien you were,
Cloned and replicated new fellows,
You're not feeling yourself just now,
Feats and phrases are all echoes.

But if someone seeks out a quote,
You tell them to ask the mirror you,
Only things trumping who you are,
Are you and matching Double You.

Michael Pollan
“Every new step in the direction of simplification – toward monoculture, say, ore genetically identical plants – leads to unimaginable new complexities.(intended as challenges)”
Michael Pollan, The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World

Lionel Fisher
“Did I think I'd ever find someone I could live with, she asked me, and I said yes, and she said who, and I said me with a vagina and cleavage a little dog could get lost in.”
Lionel Fisher, Celebrating Time Alone: Stories Of Splendid Solitude

Alesha Escobar
“Sometimes he’d dream of hunting for Adam the Usurper twenty years in the future, or of Doctor Simmons sending Aero to burrow into his head and steal his most secret thoughts and desires.”
Alesha Escobar, Masters of Time: A Science Fiction and Fantasy Time Travel Anthology

John Scalzi
“In the early evening of the second day, Andrea Gell-Man introduced the 8th to the concept of profanity, which she picked up at lunch and shared just before dinner. At dinner members of the 8th enthusiastically told each other to pass the fucking salt, you fucking sack of shit, until Brahe told them to quit that goddamn shit, cock-suckers, because it gold old pretty goddamn quick. There was a general agreement that Brahe was correct, until Gell-Man taught the squad to swear in Arabic.”
John Scalzi, The Ghost Brigades

Stewart Stafford
“You could clone Elvis Presley and, while the clone would look identical, it would not have the utterly unique life experiences that made The King who he was. After all that time, effort and expense, the clone might choose to be a gardener instead of a singer! There's also the ethical dilemma of recreating all the genetic problems Elvis had due to his maternal grandparents being first cousins.”
Stewart Stafford

Emiko Jean
“In that case, maybe I will immortalize myself in one-eighth scale."
Months ago, I toured a startup specializing in personal clones. For 108,000 yen, roughly one thousand dollars, a clerk will create a 3D model of your head, then print it and attach it to the body of a doll. I'd teased Akio with a pocket-sized Izumi. He'd been appropriately horrified.”
Emiko Jean, Tokyo Dreaming

Malcolm F. Cross
“If God made man in His image, and man made me in the image of man, am I in possession of the Imago Hominis?

Am I, for the lack of a more precise term, a human being like you?

- Troy Salcedo”
Malcolm F. Cross, Mouse Cage

“Before you hire, ask yourself how much your hiring decision is linked to the ways the candidate is similar to you.”
