This was unfortunately not as good as the first.

It turned out to probably be the most fast paced book I’ve ever read, after the first 25% or so. Too fast paced honestly, and at the expensive of good plot and dialogue. It’s like the author had key points and features he wanted to include but didn’t know how to fill the in between, really forcing the story along.

I didn’t agree with some of the big events in the beginning but in the end they didn’t even seem to matter.

The ending was very rushed and I’m not even sure if there will be a third book but there probably will be with a “big bad” still out there.

The book is very crunchy but sacrifices a lot along the way to make him advance more quickly.

I enjoyed it, and you’ll still like it if you enjoyed the first book. There washing so much happening it would have been better paced into 2/3 books instead.

A Winding Detour - "A Snake's Path" (A Snake's Life, #2) by Kenneth Arant

Rating: ⭐⭐ (2/5)

In Depth: Kenneth Arant's "A Snake's Path," the second installment in the series, continues the lackluster journey of its predecessor, failing to inject vitality into an already stagnant narrative. The promise of character growth and a more engaging storyline remains unfulfilled, leaving readers grappling with a sequel that struggles to slither out of the shadow of mediocrity.

Shortcomings:

The protagonist's evolution feels forced and lacks authenticity, leaving the reader unconvinced of the snake's supposed growth.
The narrative remains meandering, with events unfolding without clear direction or purpose, contributing to a sense of aimlessness.
The opportunity to expand and enrich the fantasy realm is squandered, resulting in a lack of depth and imagination in the backdrop.
The sequel leans heavily on repetitive elements, recycling themes from the first book without introducing fresh dynamics to sustain reader interest.
The conflict lacks nuance or intensity, failing to evoke a genuine sense of tension or investment in the outcome.

Conclusion: "A Snake's Path" struggles to shed the shortcomings of its predecessor, offering little to rekindle interest or redeem the series. The potential for improvement remains untapped, resulting in a sequel that coils itself into a narrative knot of missed opportunities and unfulfilled promises.

Once again the author begins the book with an awkward narrative perspective. The sequel should always be as good as the first and the initial narrative perspective is definitely as awkward as the first book.

The Negative: Between books a radical character shift has occurred and several things about the main character's personality have become apparent much to my dismay as he grew increasingly unlikeable. The supporting cast weren't much better as several of them proved annoying, speculatively that might have been intentional but regardless they were annoying. Most of the initial supporting cast carried from the first book are even less developed here (scratch that every character is under-developed) but that proves moot as they serve no bearing on the story beyond a compass and a plot point. The story is even more meandering for the first half until the King's challenge at which point the present narrative and end goal finally take form only to be derailled and abandoned shortly after. The Primary character motivation is achieved through no effort of the character, it just happens like everything else in the story.

The Positive: The Power creep is even more excessive (sometimes outrageous but entertaining), some major plot points are resolved in this story making it an end to the saga if you so please (the unresolved threads can be imagined to their conclusion from the nature of the story thus far).

Conclusion: If you read the first, then might as well read this it's short and won't take much out of you.

Awesome ending to a very original litrpg story. I only have three complaints:

1. The bunch of "interlude" scenes really took me out of the story, and I actually had to skip pass them and even a couple of chapters searching for Torga's return. I understand it's reason for some of the interactions with Torga, but I've discovered as a writer that sometimes figuring out how to maintain the current POV while still providing the same info ends up creating a much stronger scene than popping into a new POV. Even still, it was the same as the first book so that really wasn't what cased me to drop a star.

The main reason I dropped the star, and one might consider this somewhat petty, but it was because of the decision to start to use stats. The reason I found the first book so refreshing was the very limited reference to stats, mentioning it in only so far as it pertained to Torga's evolution. About halfway through this story, however, Arant started using them, and it was incredibly jarring simply because he hadn't done it before; it made the story feel less "real". Again, I'm sure others will argue differently but that decision took me out of the story far more than those interludes did. Still fun, still a great conclusion, but that's why.

The book really captivated me. I like the author's writing style and the character seem too behave naturally and are relatable.

However, after the first half it starts to feel rushed somehow and the pace only increases. From the very detailed descriptions of every punch in every fight it turns into suddenly very overpowered main character and lots of timeskips.
What's irritating me, though are the loose ends. Torga's journey is complete and his story told, but most of the villains simply vanish. Then there was the ending of the desert moon which felt like wasted time. It had no effect on the story and the careful build-up of the situation, background and characters from that moon were practically destroyed within a single paragraph. Like the author ran out of paper or plans for a book 3 were canceled at this point.

It is still a very enjoyable read and while I am irritated over a few details and loose ends, I would still gladly buy a third book or a similar story from this author.

By the way, signing up to the publisher's newsletter gives access to a short story collection of Reina's adventures.

A fantastical book about a reincarnated man from earth who enters the world dominated by Yggdrasil, the world tree, as a snake and who is searching for his wife who died and who he still mourns after so many years. Travelling and growing from strength to strength he makes new friends and adopts a young girl, Ayla and these become his new family. He knows that he has to become the strongest he can be if he is to keep those he cares for safe but in the process he makes some serious mistakes and destroys many people and planets. The stronger and mightier he grew the more his gluttonous hunger could not be quenched and he even eradicated Asgard, the country where Thor's family reigned and Thor was Ayla's betrothed. This makes Torga leave his family behind for many years till he sorts his quest out and his battles become those of the Gods themselves who as usual use mortals as pawns in their games of power. The adventure is non-stop action all the way, in this fun story which at the root of it all is based on love and the ending is an ending we deserve.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.

To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.

To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.

To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

Cheers

Ruined storyline

I’m beyond frustrated with this book. In book 1 Torga met Ayla and called her brat. He worked with Hali and let it be known he was married and looking for his wife. Book 1 ended with him in an evolution egg for 10 years and getting out and reuniting with the crew. Book 2 completely throws away that sequence of events. Now Hali is still tryin to get him to marry her, Ayla became his adopted daughter overnight, he was only missing for 18 months instead of 10 years etc. Everybody is apparently an adopted daughter to him. It’s beyond frustrating. I can’t focus on if the world building is good because it’s all wrong. None of it follows what was previously written. So many details are thrown in that weren’t in the first book but are written as if the reader should know that this already happened. Heck at one point Hali talks about her dad Fenris dying in a flashback and then nothing is made of it when he clearly isn’t dead. I gave up at 35%

This is one off the worst conclusions to a series I have ever read. Normally I do not write reviews, so this should tell you a little about how bad this book was. It seams like the writer made the main character way to powerful in the first book and just thought “let’s keep going. I need some money”. There is a time skip that skips ten years and the writer keeps referring back to something that happens in these “unwritten” years. We skip straight to the main character coming out of his cocoon. And now he is way too powerful yada yada and have to leave his family to become a god so he can have his happy ending. And the writer just keep pouring on power for the MC. It is a very unsatisfactory conclusion to something that could have been great

An expensive but good book

Don't think I will continue with this story unless it's on the unlimited list of books. The author has added some really interesting plot lines in this book. However the fact that the book is 5 bucks and only 290 pages is a bit disappointing. Especially when you count the filler pages at the back and before the book that's about 30 pages just filled with nonsense to increase the page count.

Very good book.

I really enjoyed this book, it is well written and a fun read all around. I thought this book was very good, but it was not quite as good as the first one. To me the two biggest detractors was that there was never a moment where I felt the mc was in real danger and the end of the book felt incredibly rushed. I really liked the end but to me it felt like it was a last minute decision to end the story where it did.

Power creep, the book
The size of the MC never makes any fucking sense. He is miles long and yet people don't see him until he is right there. HOW ?! This was also a problem in the last book but now it gets to ridiculous proportions. During the fights a snake that can't even see his own tail and that has a circumference of hundreds of feet is thrown hundreds of feet away after a hit. Thats like saying he rolled over.

Book 3??

Short straight forward.
MC is over powered but still enjoyable.
I'm dad there's not much interaction with his wife.

At the start... There's a time skip... Can't tell if 18 months......or 10 years. Meh.
Still was a fun read. Finished both books bc of the fun ride in <12 hours.

Hope there's a book 3....

Too Far

I really enjoyed the first book. However this book went too far into crazy land. Eating planets in a couple of weeks??? Miles long snake??? Getting up after a moon was thrown at you??? I did finish this train wreck book, and I am left with the WTF did I just read feeling.

Unique, unpredictable and fun.

I really enjoyed these books, they always threw something new at you and things got massively out of hand in a unique way which was fun and interesting.

All my guesses were wrong and I remember a specific moment I thought ah, now he'll break free because he's the MC and then proceeded get trapped. Iy defined expectations in a good way a lot.

Good Follow up!

I have found many times riders who do a very good first book sometimes find it difficult to follow up with a decent second book in the series. But I found this one to be an excellent follow up. I’d like the jump in time and the introduction of the key character individual early on.

There's a lot of cognitive dissidence going on in these books. Alfred is just some kindly old man... who casually genocides and eats hundreds to thousands of sentient species, some times even humans. Any ways he becomes the most biggerester in this one and fights some gods.

Enjoyable

This was definitely another enjoyable book with quite a few things going on throughout the story. You had divine interventions, ancient foes waking up from their prison, and much more. Overall, I had an enjoyable time reading it, even if I think I enjoyed the first one a bit more due to more overall humor.

As Awesome as the First Book!

The story about Torga and Reina. Was as fantastic and engrossing as the first book. I could barely pull my self away from it. To go to sleep. A wonderful series to resd. I hope that there's a third book. As the epilogue hinted at!

Amazing something different

Having a MC battling through his path is all well and good. But I really enjoy a overpowered MC. its just downright fun. And this series put a new spin on the old formula Can't wait for the next book.

Wonderful

This book and the series that it is part of is well thought out. The only problem I have is sometimes the book will jump characters on you and you have to keep reading to figure out exactly what perspective you have jumped to

Great Story

Was really looking forward to this sequel and it didn't disappoint. The MCs hunger pains do pose a problem but it takes a interesting turn of events. I am looking forward to the next book.

Great continuation

Evolution stories tend to get silly after a while with the growth needed for the MC to maintain progression, and whilst the scaling here is indeed to that level, the writing and depth of character development firmly keeps the story grounded in a fantastic way.

I enjoyed the fact that it kept the same breakneck pace as the first book. But the power scaling was all over the place and inconsistent. Feels like a point to end the series on, but there are enough unfinished subplots that there'll probably be one or two more books.

Disjointed

Loved the first book but this one was all over the place. I had to re read so much for a lot of it to make sense with all the mini jumps, don’t know how this made it part an editor to be honest.

Timeline is a mess

The book is good but the timeline and characters are messy. Example: 10 years is 18 months? A year is decade? What happened to the other goblins? Only Fin exists... Fenris and family disappeared?

Big changes

Our snake is in the warpath to find his wife and help his chosen family but his abilities are getting a little out of hand. This book has a lot of action. Some new people and a lot of enemies to face. This is quite the book!
