Melanie Gillman takes over the writing with this relaunch of the Steven Universe comic book series and immediately elevates it with tales worthy of the original TV show. Peridot and Lapis Lazuli help Steven with a wildlife rescue. Stevonnie goes on a date with a regular character who I do not believe was previously revealed as LGBTQ+. Mayor Dewey brings food trucks to Beach City to boost the off-season economy. (The only story that really didn't work for me, because who gives a crap about Mayor Dewey.) Finally, Peridot visits a Renaissance fair with Steven and Amethyst and wreaks havoc in her adorably surly manner.

This is a good Steven fix between viewings of the show. My only concern is Gillman appears to switch off writing chores with someone else in future volumes. But I'll soon find out since I'll definitely be reading more just to find any stories that they do write.

This is my first introduction to the SU graphic novels, and oh boy, this is just gonna be the beginning!

Containing 4 short stories about nonbinary baby birds, sapphic prom dates, food trucks, and ren faires (respectively), this lovely little volume delivers perfect little pockets of this lovable world and its characters. Melanie Gillman effortlessly adds more content to the core heart of Steven Universe, with each chapter feeling like little filler episodes of the beloved series.

Each story, just like each episode of Steven Universe, left me feeling a little more mindful upon completion. I've always said that I love Steven Universe because watching it makes me a better person, and I'm happy to say this book is no different.

I will most definitely be picking up more of these.

These comics are just like reading filler episodes of the show. Really cute and fun and full of heart. Now that the show is on hiatus until at least the movie that comes out in the fall, it's nice to catch up on all the printed adventures.

This is a slick edition of the first four comics from the ongoing series begun in 2017. Though there's no new content, comics-wise, there are cover galleries that allow you to see all the variants. All the stories are fun, and I like this type of storytelling better than the original comic series--each "chapter" has one story instead of the way they had one main story and several shorts in the original eight-issue series. The four chapters don't connect to each other to tell a continuous story overall though.

The big star of the issue is clearly the second one, with Steven and Connie fusing as a ploy to get into a movie they aren't old enough for, and happening to still be fused when they run into Kiki Pizza. From there the two end up trying on dresses and agreeing to go to the dance together. Steven and Connie are excited, but there's a lot of weirdness associated with dating--even more so when you're two kids fused together and you haven't told your date about that. (Not to mention Steven and Connie's feelings for each other, and how that fits into their way of thinking when they're Stevonnie.)

I've reviewed each individual issue of the comics so I won't repeat here. Just know I think this book is very worth it.

Steven Universe is a TV star! Who knew? In this first volume of the comic reboot, Steven finds a baby bird. Trying to do the right thing, he puts the bird outside and hopes the mom finds it. When no mom appears, Steven raises the bird to adulthood. Cute and likable the story presents Steven as non-binary and makes no assumptions about the bird.

This was great! I loved the artwork and the characters felt totally true to themselves. The first was sweet and I loved seeing Peridot and Lapis, the second had some super fun happenings what with Kiki and Stevonnie (albeit kind of strange) and I appreciate how it wrapped up. I loved the third also and it was nice to see Mayor Dewey get a little face time as he doesn’t get a terrible amount in the show, definitely few (if any) actual arcs or episodes. The fourth was nice and funny but least favorite of the four. Overall this was super fun!

Very cute and felt authentic if you are a fan of the show. These could have easily been little fillers in the series. Nothing groundbreaking but I will rank my favorites:

The Prom
The Renaissance Festival
The Bird
The Food truck

It can be difficult for a comic adaptation to match the tone & caliber of a TV show with a tight writers room, but this volume knocks it out of the park. It felt like watching episodes of Steven, that's probably the biggest compliment I could give it. Fun & funny & with the necessary heart to make it truly legit.

I absolutely loved this book. You can read my full review on Rogues Portal or check out an excerpt below.

Steven Universe Vol. 1: Warp Tour makes a strong argument for why TPBs are so dang cool. This collection of issues allows you to dive into Steven’s world and snuggle up for a little while, hanging out with him and his loved ones while they rescue baby birds, go to prom, participate in a food truck competition, and explore a renaissance faire. There’s also a cover gallery at the back of the book that showcases the different variants of its collected issues, all of which are stunning renditions of scenes from the series.

Warp Tour features several of the characters from the beloved cartoon. Peridot’s total lack of social graces shines in both the baby bird issue and the renaissance faire issue. Stevonnie — Steven and Connie’s fused form — makes an appearance and accidentally ends up as someone’s date to the prom. Even the mayor of Beach City and his laconic, sarcastic son make an appearance, as Beach City attempts to attract food-loving tourists to the town to build revenue in the off-season. Steven’s bright enthusiasm for everything ties the whole book together, which is par for the course, and it’s a super fun read from beginning to end.

Like the tv series, the comic is able to address thorny issues, especially ones surrounding gender/sexual identity, in a way that is kindhearted and fun, dressed in metaphors but somehow also refreshingly straightforward.

In one story, Steven, Peridot, and Lapis care for a baby bird and, not knowing it's gender, use non-gender pronouns. Stevonie, goes to a dance with Kiki and, realizing that they may have accidentally led her on, Steven and Connie ask each other how soon and how much they need to tell others about what they are, asking questions that will seem familiar to anyone who has realized that their identity is at odds with others expectations. Then, Mayor Dewey and Buck organize a food truck rally in the hopes of drawing off-season tourism to Beach City but the business owners on the boardwalk are disappointed to find that they can't compete with the flashy food-trucks and don't see any of the profits, a consist little explanation of gentrification.

Have I raved to you yet about how much I love this show? I. LOVE. This show. I recommend it to all of you, especially those with kiddos. The way it tackles issues of relationships and consent in a kid-friendly manner, the way it normalizes and affirms queerness and identity, the heart that comes through in every episode... it's SO GOOD.

This book contains four fun little stories that are true to their source material and make great use of some of the show's secondary characters to engage the reader in life in and around Beach City. Recommended for fans of the show and people still needing to be convinced to drop the $7.99 to watch the first several seasons on Hulu. *stares pointedly at several friends*

I don't always go for the comic format of tv shows, but this issue rules. I appreciated how closely the illustrations approximated the show's art, while still retaining the artist's original style. Like the series, readers will appreciate how beautifully Steven and otherworldly friends navigate interpersonal issues in human, heartwarming ways. If you want to check out more of Melanie Gillman (a non-binary comic artist!), look up "As the Crow Flies", their latest publication about a queer black teen who attends an all-white christian feminist camp that's predictably less-than-intersectional.

Fascinating snippets of life in Beach City with infrequent looks into the lives of the gems. What I love the most about this comic is the exploration of gender. The comic always uses “they” pronouns if the person’s pronouns aren’t known, and there is incredible gender play and enby gender identity exploration for the fusion of Steven and Connie - Stevonnie.

Characters like Peridot resist simple readings of their identities, rankling against assumptions about their identities based on readings of their bodies.

This was SO fun and in perfect continuity with [the original] Steven Universe series on Cartoon Network/Hulu/whatever. And I'm not just saying that because it's written by an old friend and former roommate, but I AM super proud of Melanie for this.

PS - If you've ever been to the Colorado Renaissance Faire/Festival in Larkspur, you'll surely recognize every scene in the last issue of this volume and smile!

If I could give this a million stars, I would. This was absolutely fantastic, both the art and stories, and it's now my absolute favorite Steven Universe graphic novel. I'm gonna have to go out and buy a copy of if for myself, it's so good. I really loved how nonbinary people were just casually included throughout.

While it's nice to see a Steven Universe comic book that actually resembles a normal comic book (unlike the previous series's random cavalcade of short stories) it would be nice if there was some kind of storyline across multiple issues. As it stands the new series is just a bigger, better version of the old one.

An absolute joy to read! It was fantastic to see the same spirit of the show captured in a graphic novel. I was thrilled to see some background references that really made my day, but more than that the actual story itself explored some ideas that were incredibly important to me. I can't wait to see more!

Like watching four new episodes of Steven. Three of the four stories worked really well for me. They're as effective as good episodes -- I hate to be redundant, but that's the highest praise I could give.

Cute af and it's kinda cool they're trying to teach people the they/them non assuming recognition for people you don't know the gender of.

The art and writing was super similar to the show too so that's a plus.

soooo cute! I got to see Stevonnie!!! I'm still very new to Steven Universe and the whole story and know the comics aren't really a part of the bigger story but it's a good way to slowly learn about some of the world — the characters at least.

I love Steven Universe. This is a collection of a few stories that feel like lost episodes from the tv show, but the way they approach the subjects, how everything is so natural, is great. Had a fun time reading it, despite it being kinda short. Worth the time.

Definitely the best Steven Universe comics to date. Everyone is written very in-character and each issue feels like an episode of the show. Looking forward to the next collection in this series!
