Young has lost some of the spark that made his previous Rocket Raccoon series so grand. The first 3 issues get really dark but it pays off in the third issue. The last 3 issues are all one note jokes with inferior, super busy artwork. The fantasy football issue made my eyes bleed and the viking issue wasn't much better.

Re-read 2021
Just did a re-read and couldn't even get through those last 3 issues. I have some doubts about how much involvement Young had on those issues given he immediately left the book thereafter.

I liked it, I really did. But considering how much I LOVE Rocket and Groot and how much I enjoyed the volume Groot by Loveness, I expected more of this. Not only because I love both titular characters, but also because I usually love Skottie Young's work. And there is the keyword: usually.

The first 3 issues were ... a bit weird but I attributed that to the Secret Wars stuff (hint: it's secret so don't feel bad if you don't know about it, like me for example). Still, it was kind of cool. The only thing was that Groot looked a bit anorexic. However, I thought that was part of the story since he was in a rough shape.

The other issues were ... well, I don't want to talk about #4 and the other two were only marginally better. The humour was just too flat for me (even when compared to the usual one-liners it was pretty dull).

Sadly, the art was not too much to my liking either. Again, usually I adore Skottie Young's art so I was very much looking forward to this but maybe I was expecting too much. Because when I hear Skottie Young, I'm either thinking of the Baby Superheroes or art like this

but that is not at all what I got. As I said, it all looked kind of wrong, especially in the latter half of this volume.

I had fun, but not as much as I had wanted.

Set eight months after the end of Secret Wars (even though that detail turns out to be irrelevant), the Guardians think Rocket and Groot are dead for some reason but they’re not - Groot’s doing some kind of Memento tribute and Rocket’s ruling over an alien planet?? Oh boy…

Skottie Young’s pre-Secret Wars Rocket Raccoon series was ok but his post-Secret Wars Rocket and Groot title is, like too many other Marvel books to emerge from that event, terrible. He just doesn’t seem to care. He’s got no good stories left to tell and all that’s left is disposable, throwaway rubbish.

The three-part story that opens this volume is one long setup to a punchline that’s actually pretty funny in a fuck you kinda way (though all it really does it underline how pointless this entire series is). The other stories manage to be even more inconsequential and worthless. Rocket and Iron Man do a D&D/Fantasy Football thing, Rocket and Groot battle alien Vikings, and the book closes out with the two playing bar games. Absolute garbage!

Some of the art is decent like Filipe Andrade’s work on the first three issues, and Jay Fosgitt and Brett Bean’s issues are ok, though Fosgitt is doing his damnedest to mimic Young’s style. I Hate Fairyland’s colourist Jean-Francois Beaulieu livens up the pages with his usual visual magic. Aaron Conley’s art on the D&D/Fantasy Football issue is some of the busiest art I’ve seen in some time - just exhausting to look at! And Rob Liefeld shows he’s still the worst by drawing the most horrendous Rocket cover ever!

Skottie Young isn’t trying anymore given these boring, boring stories. If you want to see where his creative energy is being directed these days, check out his excellent Image series, I Hate Fairyland, which is the antithesis of this crap. Marvel really is pitching a no-hitter with their Guardians books these days!

Hey Skottie, come here man.

This volume is flarking awesome. All four stories in this one hit the mark dead-on.

First we have Groot on a scavenger hunt across the Galaxy following "tattoos" (really just carvings, right?) that Rocket left on him in order to come find him. Turns out that Rocket was pulling one over on Groot the whole time but in the process we get to meet:

Pockets Possum and his pal, Shrub!

So, basically the alternate universe and equally hilarious version of our title characters.

Moving on, Rocket is DM'ing a wicked game of D&D (wait, they call it Wizard Wars) with the Avengers and others.

Tony Stark keeps going off script so they make a bet that Rocket can't win in Tony's "Fantasy Football" league. Let's just say that it's not what Rocket was expecting, but he still comes out on top.

Next they have a run-in with some space viking type people who think Groot is a God and want to sacrifice him via volcano.

The last issue has Rocket and Groot engage in an epic battle of "I can beat you at anything" which surprisingly has Groot come out ahead in just about everything. It's also responsible for one of the funniest exchanges between these characters that I've read.

Rocket: "I'm about to fast you so furious you don't even know!

Groot: "I am Groot!"

Rocket: "Get the %#$@ outta here. If anyone is Vin Diesel, it's me!"

The first half of this collection was kind of twisted... but still quite funny. It was a delicate balancing act of hubris and eros... or possibly bathos and... Thanos? No, that's not right, either, damnit.

Anyway, the second half gave up the darker edge and just turned into a bunch of one-shot, one-joke romps. How much you enjoy this book will depend on how much you dig that kind of guff.

Is this really a four star general book? Eh, prob'ly not, but giving it less felt like kicking a puppy who just wants to love you SO VERY VERY MUCH! Call it the last few dregs of my Christmas spirit.

This is more like what I expected from Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Stupid and uninteresting with bad art. Okay to be fair, the first story was okay, I just didn't like it. The last story with Rocket and Groot trying to prove which is "better" just had the characters written wrong. A disappointment given how good the last few related book I've read of them have been. 2.5 of 5.

Things I liked:
- The art-style
- the quirkiness of Groot and Rocket

But:
- Wasn't hooked
and
- I've read better Groot and Rocket comics.

Enjoyable but not really memorable.

This title ended up being a bit more "all - ages" in terms of tone. And while that's not necessarily a bad thing, I was expecting a bit more substance, especially in the last 3 issues within this volume.

The first 3 issues are one arc consisting of Groot trying to "save" Rocket who has been brainwashed (maybe?) into being a despot type ruler of a planet. Eventually it all gets sorted, but not without a few good actions scenes and some pretty funny dialog. I liked this story, and thought it was a good way to start the series and establish the tone of the book overall.

However after the 3rd issue, it seems Young runs out of steam, and instead of writing another arc, he approaches the book in more of a "one and done" type stories. These are pretty inconsequential and rely mostly on the art to carry the flimsy-at-best premises to the finish line. In my opinion, this is approach wasn't my cup of tea, and is probably geared more towards kids who read the book instead. Not to say I want "Watchmen" type pathos in a Rocket and Groot book, but a bit of substance was expected, if I'm being honest.

Overall, not bad, but if you are going to read this, realize it is more of a fun lighthearted read than anything.

Bit of a mixed bag both in art and story quality. Really loved the first couple of chapters - but the last couple didn't agree with my tastes. So, perhaps for hardcore fans only. Some of the later art is so over-stylized and weirdly colored it's hard to tell what you're looking at some of the time.

This was so cute. I loved the art and the stories were good. Silly, but good. I honestly think Marvel needs more silly comics, because almost everything is so dark and depressing. Good thing I just bought another comic book from Skottie Young.

So, the actual collection isn't very good. But the one shots after are not only funny, but the art is outstanding! I don't think I've experienced this with a trade before, because normally the one shots after are not good in any way. The D&D stuff was so good!

So, they earned this trade a 3, but the stuff before them would be a pass.

First of all, these two words alone should already sell this book: Skottie Young. This guy gets it. He perfectly knows how to tell fun stories with loads of humor, heart and emotion. This is a loose continuation of his pre-Secret Wars Rocket Raccoon book, which he completely wrote and which he drew most of. It brings some elements along, such as the birthday party for Rocket. But if you haven't read that book (yet), no worries, because this book is perfectly understandable on its own.

This trade collects the first six issues of Rocket Raccoon & Groot, written by Skottie Young and every story is drawn by another artist, but always with the color work of Jean-Francois Beaulieu. The first three issues in this trade are a story about Rocket suddenly being an emperor of a planet, while Groot is imprisoned there. This story is really fun and shows how cunning Rocket can be when it comes to coming up with plans of any sort. But even though this beginning is already great, the rest of the book is where Skottie's talent as a writer really comes to fruition. These three issues are all self-contained one-shots, which can all be read on their own. They're fun little stories, ranging from an alien rugby match to Groot being mistaken for a god. They are funny as hell, and show an amazing friendship between Rocket & Groot.

As for the art department, it's a shame Skottie Young is not drawing this. His interior art is just beautiful all the way, as seen in books like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or his previous Rocket Raccoon book. But he's been too busy with cover work for Marvel and his creator owned series I Hate Fairyland, so other artists had to come in to draw this book. The first three issues are drawn by Filipe Andrade, which is pretty good artwork. The art fits the story well, because the tone of this story is a little darker than the other stories, so the art goes along with that. Not superior artwork, but more than acceptable. The other three issues are each drawn by another artist, respectively Aaron Conley, Jay Fosgitt and Brett Bean. Conley's art is… not good. He's lucky that Beaulieu (who is in my opinion the best colorist in the game) is there to color it up so that it doesn't really feel like total crap. But this is by far the worst of the book. Fosgitt's art, however, is extremely clean. It reminds me a lot of Looney Tunes art, which is suiting for a book like this. Bean's art is the best of the bunch. It really feels a lot like Skottie's art and it's just as clean as his, so it suits the book perfectly. So all in all, the art is more than good.

Overall, this book really makes you laugh and touches perfectly on a friendship that is unique to the Marvel universe. These stories are accompanied by great art, so that makes this score more than fitting.

More Rocket & Groot!! One of the great things about these is that they are completely readable as stand-alone books. They don't depend upon you having read Guardians of the Galaxy (which I have not, but am going to be looking into).

--Rocket & Groot have been apparently killed in action in a Guardians' story, but a mysterious bark-covered individual seems to be on a massive, multi-universe spanning quest to track down his furry, be-tailed companion
--Rocket & Iron Man play a little fantasy football to settle a bet on whether or not Tony Stark will follow Rocket's rules while playing D&D (get your geek on, people)
--Groot is set up as a God on a backward planet, but godhood's not all it's cracked up to be & the duo must escape with the help of their kidnapper
--A game of pool gets out of control as Groot & Rocket embark on an epic journey of competitiveness

I really enjoyed this one. This volume was mostly just Rocket and Groot running around the galaxy and having adventures. Also Fantasy Football but for real...

I will definitely be picking up volume 2 soon!

content warnings: discussions of torture, murder and body mutilation

Welp, that was really fucking disappointing. I haven't read any other Rocket & Groot stuff (though I've been meaning to for ages) and this wasn't a very good start.

This volume has two seperate stories: Issues 1-3 are about Groot trying to find and rescue Rocket from a situation, and issues 4-6 are about them being kidnapped by space vikings(?). There are also almost-doppelgangers of them both, fantasy football, dnd, and so much more weird shit. I had some pretty big issues with both stories.

I quite enjoyed the storyline of issues 1-3 and Pocket & Shrub were weird, interesting characters. My problem here was the art style; it wasn't bad, it just didn't gel with me very well. However, in issues 4-6 I really enjoyed the art style and I liked how bonkers and colourful it looked. The story was what really let me down in these issues, especially because the storyline in issues 1-3 never feels resolved so it's very jarring.

I'm already not a big fan of when a six-issue volume doesn't have a single, complete story in it, and this comic did nothing to change that opinion.

Always love Skottie Young's writing. he has a fun way to tell a story and a bit of hole in his head (which is good for comics). but what the hell happened to this book? the first two issue is dark and serious, nothing sound like written by him. don't even get me started on issue #3. it was bad! the art is super ugly, i skipped the whole issue. my eyes can't take it anymore. the story also a ridiculous fantasy about rocket playing football with tony stark (seriously tony stark looking like an alien). this whole book is a one shot stories that doesn't related to each other. only the #1 & #2 are connected. issue #4 is like a comic made for kindergarten kids. with a silly artwork!

i'm giving a 1 star for the last issue which was quite fun! the next volume for this run is amazing & really funny! please skip this one and read that one instead cause this book is gonna ruin your interest for both of these GOTG members! i warned ya!

Absolutely terrible. - 1 out of 5 star rating.

Two extremely hard misses in a row. First Al Ewing's Rocket series, and now this.

A carbon copy of rocket, but instead of a raccoon its a rat...

Then... another Flora Colossus, which absolutely rubs me the wrong way, as Groot was supposed to be the last of his kind, which has been echo'd over and over again across multiple content deliveries. Then he says "Me are Shrub" instead of "I am Groot."

About 10th time I read "Me are Shrub." ... alt + F4 / cntrl + alt + delete / remove download / I am done.

No way. I respect myself too much to continue, let alone a 10 episode spread. I am not going to tolerate content like this. There are literally THOUSANDS of comics out there. I will find something actually enjoyable and meaningful instead of worst-in-class content like this.

Rocket a Groot jsou pohřešovaní tak dlouho, že už si všichni myslí, že jsou mrtví. To by ale nebyli oni dva.. Jdou z dobrodružství do dobrodružství.

Decided to check out more adventures of Rocket and Groot after reading Rocket Racoon and Groot Ultimate Collection. This volume collects the Rocket Racoon and Groot series (#1-6) that was released in 2016.

The last 3 episodes are separate stories and are similar in tone to the story that was included as part of Annihilators: Earthfall. Fun and light-hearted. The artwork reminded me of a Saturday cartoon.

The first 3 comics form a single story. It's darker than the other stories. Not horror dark or anything like that but definitely different in tone.

Skottie Young returns to write more stories about Rocket Racoon, this time with Groot as an official co-star in the title (even though Groot was in most every story of the Rocket Raccoon solo series anyways). They go around the universe doing random stuff as creatures attack and things like that. The first three issues are an arc about Rocket being lost somewhere and Groot having to track him down, then we get three one-offs about Rocket and Groot fighting things and doing stuff. Every issue of this series felt like a fill-in arc or annual one-shot to some other Guardians of the Galaxy series. Nothing ties it together other than our two characters and the consistent unfunny humour.

This was pretty bad. The art was ugly, the stories thin and lacking much connection between them (which, to be fair, could come down to the format -- but I guess I expect some sort of payoff in terms of depth for reading 6 issues of a comic). There were some cool ideas around the friendship and rivalry between Rocket and Groot, and the existence of the multiverse, plus a definite homage to Ren and Stimpy in a story about a D&D game/Fantasy Football writ large, but overall it really didn't do it for me.

This was so wholesome!!!!!

I would honestly have beem fine with this comic if it were just the characters; they were so well done!

A tree that only speaks one language, a narcissistic Raccoon, an assassin that speaks to the readers, thus breaking the fourth wall...

And I couldn't put in to words how simple and fun this was. You'd truly have to read it for yourself.

The comedy was actually funny, the plot was well-devoloped (towards the end), the story was very entertaining, the characters were so, so, immeasurably perfect.

Read this.

Do it.

Read it.
