CELEBRATIONS: Miniature Crepe Paper & Moss Carrots

Miniature Crepe Paper Carrots - homework (5)Easter is around the corner and now that I don’t have a little one at home, I don’t go all out on an Easter basket for cute bunny décor anymore. But it wouldn’t be any fun without some type of Easter project.

Homework: reading {artful halloween}

Is it too early? I wasn’t sure if I was ready for Halloween projects yet but the days fly by so quickly and I didn’t want to find myself the night before Halloween without any spooky decorations.

Fortunately, I received a book titled Artful Halloween by Susan Wasinger.

The book is filled with fun artful Halloween projects and ideas that are easy to create.

Blog Halloween Book-001I love these whimsical fabric ideas. A felt embroidered owl and a napkin stamped using a potato.

Blog Halloween Book-002Decorating pumpkins is a hot trend and there’s an entire section on pumpkins. Beautiful pumpkins with great tips and techniques.

Blog Halloween BookThese blood spattered paper flowers were right up my alley. I had all the materials on hand and the step-by-step instructions were easy to follow.

I decided to use my flowers in a spooky centerpiece and found a crow from last year.

And no word is spookier to me than Edgar Allen Poe’s use of the word “nevermore”.

Here are my blood spattered flowers. I used more of blood drip technique but they still scream “gory” to me.

Quoth the raven, "Nevermore."

Little Crafts: crepe paper jellyfish

Jellyfish 5_FinalHere’s a fun under-the-sea craft that little ones can do.
Make a crepe paper jellyfish.

Depending on your little crafters age, you can make this project simpler or more elaborate.

Materials Needed:
  • Cupcake liners
  • Crepe Paper (for this project, I used white, pink and purple)
  • Glue
  • Needle and thread

Jellyfish Collage Final
  1. Start with two cupcake liners stacked together to form the base of your jellyfish. I found that one liner was too flimsy so I used two. Thread your needle and poke the needle up through the cupcake liners.
  2. Cut rounded-edge strips of crepe paper and stick them onto the needle. For smaller children you can just glue them on. Once you are done covering the cupcake liner with the crepe paper strips, poke the needle back through creating a loop to hang your jellyfish. Tie off the bottom of the threads.
  3. Cut various lengths and widths of crepe paper to form the tentacles.
  4. Flip the cupcake liner over and start gluing the strips of crepe paper to the inside. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.

Hang your jellyfish and let the tentacles flutter in the breeze (or ocean current).

And the best part is these sweet jellyfish don’t sting!

Happy Labor Day to my U.S. friends ~ enjoy the day off!

Inkling: halloween décor {black flowers}

It’s October! Do you decorate for Halloween or do you skip the ghosts and goblins and go straight for the overall autumn look?

I don’t do too much Halloween decorating but I couldn’t resist adding a touch of spookiness to my décor.

These black flowers are easy to make and add a splash of inky blackness to a table or mantle.

The flowers are made out of black crepe paper and the stems are twigs wrapped in the same black crepe paper. Click here for the crepe paper flower instructions.

I think these flowers would work even post-Halloween. Soften the look with some non-spooky knick knacks like this little bird for a stark centerpiece for a party or wedding.

Hope to see you tomorrow for the Inspiration Board link party.

Inkling: crepe paper corsage

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you may want to get your mother, grandmother, aunt or friend a corsage.

Fresh flower corsages are beautiful but if you want an option that’s easy on the wallet, you can make one with crepe paper flowers.

These crepe paper flowers are super easy to make. You can check out an earlier tutorial here.

Once you make your flowers simple glue them onto a piece of cardboard and add a safety pin to the back side.

The best part – this corsage won’t be all withered the next day.

Show and Tell: paper lanterns

I love paper lanterns and I’ve been on the lookout to buy some so I can decorate them for summer. I haven’t found any yet so in the meantime, I thought I’d share some pretty ones that I found online.

The first one is from Kirsty at You Had Me at Bonjour. Kirsty decorated a plain white paper lantern with fabric bunting that she made. Adorable!

The second paper lantern is from Project Wedding. These lanterns are decorated with squares of crepe paper that are glued onto the lantern. Beautiful.

Wouldn’t paper lanterns look great grouped together or strung across a backyard? I’m even more inspired to find some lanterns and get crafting.
