It’s going to backfire. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it now, and I’ll remind you all I said it with every chance I get, from now until the day I die. It’s going to backfire.

—Myrddin to Dragon, Migration 17.4

Myrddin was the leader of the Chicago Protectorate team.[7][8]

Personality[]

Myrddin is outspoken with others and willing to take a stand. During the Simurgh's attack on Madison, Wisconsin, he strongly disagreed with escalating quarantine measures. He called out Dragon when she made the excuse of following orders despite disagreeing with these measures.[9]

He is a cautious individual. After Armsmaster attacked Gwerrus and set her ablaze,[10] Myrddin told Armsmaster that these actions were reckless as they did not know the particulars of her power.[11] He considered it a priority to minimize exposure at Madison.[12][13] During the Battle against Echidna, when Tattletale proposed opening a portal to Earth Aleph with some of the present capes[14] to bargain with the Travelers,[15] he believed it was too risky, dangerous, and not guaranteed to work.[16]

He styles himself as a wizard.[7] Although it is unknown if he genuinely believes he is a wizard,[17] Myrddin did discuss the cynic-believer relationship with Chevalier and presumably mentioned magic.[18]

Reputation[]

Myrddin was considered one of the most powerful heroes in the United States of America, and a long-standing and highly valued member of the Protectorate.[19][20][18][21] Gregor believed Myrddin was globally recognized and got his position because he was intelligent, strong, and talented.[20] When Raymancer was suffering from acute radiation poisoning, Tecton had faith that his superior would find someone who could help Raymancer.[22]

Myrddin is willing to interact with news organizations. He participated in at least one interview[18] and made a public statement about Madison.[8]

According to Tattletale, Myrddin considers himself the resident dimension manipulator for the Protectorate.[23] He does not appear to be well-known to non-cape geeks in Earth Aleph; Noelle initially knew nothing about him despite being aware of heroes in Earth Bet.[24][25]

Relationships[]

Chevalier[]

Myrddin had a long time friendship with the pseudo-knight, leading into them working well together in the field.[26] They had an ongoing debate on what differentiates believer and cynic.[18]

Alexandria[]

The heroine considered Myrddin a dear friend.[27]

Armsmaster[]

May have had a hand in getting Armsmaster's transfer to Chicago.[5] Armsmaster implies he considered Myrddin one of his few friends, though he notes that his relationships were weak enough that he's not sure most people would consider it friendship.[28]

Appearance[]

He has a thick, well-trimmed brown beard. For his costume, Myrddin wears a brown burlap cloak-and-robe combination with some kind of body armor or protective gear (e.g. raised metal collar around his neck) beneath this robe. He also wears a metal visor over the upper half of his face; however, its purpose was more for casting his face in shadow rather than being actual armor.[29]

He carries around a craggy and gnarled staff of dense wood, worn by the weather.[30][29]

Abilities and Powers[]

Pocket Dimensions[]

Myrddin has access to several pocket dimensions that each follow different rules. He can fling gates to these sub-dimensions out and then set their output/input to activate them for varying 'spells', i.e., dimension-specific effects.[31][7][32]

Known Pocket Dimensions
  • A vacuum.[26][32]
  • One that he can use to fly.[32][33]
  • One that holds banished individuals.[34]
  • One that holds energy or compressed air that will explode outward with concussive force when released.[34]
  • One with heat and concussive flame[32] for explosions of energy when released.[35]
  • One with ensnaring green mist.[36]
  • One with fire.[36]
  • One with lightning.[36]

The versatility of his power gives Myrddin a wide bag of tricks to use against his opponents.[26]

  • He can apply a specific pocket dimension to fly.[32][33]
  • Myrddin can temporarily "banish" a target for a duration by pulling them into his containment pocket dimension (input) and spitting them out sometime later (output).[37][38] When activating the gate, he points his staff at the target; a clap of thunder[39] or cloud of mist[40] can accompany this activation. Note that the target can consist of more than one individual (e.g., an entire group of allies).[41]
    • He struggles to contain individuals outputting a huge Blaster power (e.g., Burnscar shooting fire, Ignis Fatuus shooting blasts of wind) or those with ongoing portal/interdimensional stuff (e.g., Echidna).[38][42][35] For example, when Myrddin banished Echidna and her swallowed hostages, he immediately had to start concentrating and went very still.[39] He lost concentration sometime afterward, releasing Echidna[43] and forcing him to spend some time to recuperate. When Myrddin later tried banishing Ignis Fatuus, he could not concentrate for long and the clone quickly broke out.[35]
  • Legend speculates that Myrddin could rig some sort of countermeasure to keep prisoners such as Madcap from escaping long-term.[44]

'Runes'[]

Myrddin can draw a 'rune' or sign in the air to 'code' a gate and control output/input, allowing him to better shape the resulting dimension-specific effect.[32]

  • He could draw a glowing symbol in the air that then explodes outward, firing a blast of concussive force in the same shape as the symbol. This allowed him to target specific combatants while ignoring his teammates. Trickster speculated that this was opening a crack into a dimension filled with compressed air.[34] He could use this power several times in rapid succession.[45] This blast could be powerful enough to push Echidna around.[46]
  • Could draw a 'dark sign' in midair that suctioned incoming matter (e.g. bodies, bugs, dust, gore, mist etc.) into it.[47] This vacuum was powerful enough to pull nearby combatants toward him.[26] Myrddin then released this collected matter as a condensed projectile: for example; after Eidolon evaporated a tidal wave from Leviathan into mist, Myrddin gathered it to form a beachball-sized sphere, then launched the orb at the Endbringer, sending him flying into a nearby building.[48]
    • He presumably used a version of this ability to remove radioactive dust that had become enmeshed within Wanton.[49]

Limitations[]

Each pocket dimension has its own gate, so he cannot have more than one gate to a particular sub-dimension at a time. For example, while the effects of a banishment are ongoing, he cannot perform another banishment.[50]

By himself, Myrddin cannot open portals between different earths.[51] Tattletale speculates that, like Labyrinth, his power might create a dimensional rift in conjunction with Scrub's blasts.[14]

His abilities didn't function properly on materials that had recently moved between dimensions, including his own pocket dimensions and Alternate Earths.[52][37]

Power Insight[]

Myrddin can catch "glimpses" of how a parahuman's power generally functions. For example, he identified that Gwerrus's power is based around retribution and was likely related to damage reflection.[53]

History[]

Background[]

Myrddin was not a member of the Inaugural Wards Team.[54] Although it is unknown when he joined the Protectorate, he was, at the very least, the leader of the Chicago branch since 2002.[18] At some point, the PRT added his DNA samples into their database.[55]

In 2009, Myrddin and Armsmaster encountered Francis Krouse and Gwerrus during the Simurgh's attack on Madison, Wisconsin. After sending Krouse into a pocket dimension,[56] he glimpsed the idea behind the Case 53's power[53] before Armsmaster set Gwerrus ablaze.[10] He had a short discussion with Dragon.[12][57][9] When Myrddin and Armsmaster reached their target area,[13] Armsmaster cordoned off the laboratory section before they started heading towards another danger site.[58]

In the aftermath of the Simurgh's attack, he delivered a press statement to boost morale and acknowledge major contributors.[8] When Krouse later gave Noelle half a vial and alerted the PRT at St. Mary's Hospital,[59][60] Myrddin, Anomaly, Revel, and three other heroes responded to the scene.[61] He and his subordinates Anomaly and Revel approached the hospital room;[62] Myrddin shattered the window and then flew into the room.[29] Despite having limited experience with his power,[25] Krouse and Noelle successfully escaped from the scene.[63]

Around a month before the start of Worm, Faultline’s Crew had a job in Philadelphia and battled Chevalier and Myrddin. Although it was a close call, Faultline’s Crew managed to complete their job and did not lose.[20]

Story Start[]

He took part in the Battle against Leviathan by working with Eidolon.[47][48][64][65] Leviathan eventually took him out of the fight.[66]

Post-Leviathan[]

Saw the scene at the hospital.

Presumably returned to Chicago, minus the potential recruit he would have had.

Post-Slaughterhouse Nine[]

Around the same time as the Battle against Echidna,[67] Blasto used a sample of Myrddin's tissue in his attempt to create the Morrígan.[68] During a short lull in the fight against Echidna, Myrddin told Tattletale that trying to open a portal to Earth Aleph was too dangerous and that they didn't know if it would work. When Tattletale asked if he said that as the resident dimensional manipulator or because he was afraid it would lead to a revelation about Cauldron, he asked her what she was talking about. Miss Militia told them to stick to the matter at hand before saying that they would talk about it later to which Myrddin agreed.

When Tattletale refused to drop it, Myrddin asked if she was a clone. Skitter told him that she almost wished she was before saying it was the real her. When Chevalier asked about why Miss Militia had attacked Tattletale, she said that Tattletale could cause a catastrophic amount of damage with her information before asking them if they had read her file. Myrddin said that he had before Chevalier asked about the information Tattletale had.

Skitter told them that she could explain and Myrddin looked towards Miss Militia. When she nodded, he raised his voice and told everyone not immediately involved in their discussion to find something else to do. Gully refused to leave, even after being warned, and Myrddin told her that they were on the brink of another conflict with an S-class threat and that she and her teammates needed to clear out. She told him that she needed to know for others like her. Myrddin told her that it wasn't the time or place before the ground shook and he noted they were out of time.[69]

Myrddin cut Echidna off before waved his staff and releasing a group of heroes that then materialized around him. When Echidna charged them, he used his staff to write a sign in the air that then exploded outwards to strike Echidna in the face. He then worked with Chevalier against Echidna. He drew a dark sign and sucked the stream of bodies and gore that Echidna released. He then directed the matter he had sucked in as a condensed bullet at Echidna. When Echidna tried to go after Chevalier, Myrddin helped drive her back.

Later, Myrddin caught up with Echidna before hitting her with one of his 'spells'. He went very still and started to concentrate after Echidna vanished. Sometime during the battle between Echidna's clones and the heroes, his concentration was broken and Echidna was released.[70]

Myrddin recovered from holding Echidna at bay underneath Legend and Alexandria before taking to the air. He snuck up on Echidna and the Eidolon clone from behind, pointed his staff at the clone, and then made it disappear. He was sent flying off course when the air the clone had compressed was released before setting himself down on the ground. When the clone reappeared, Myrddin started fighting him again. The clone tried to trap him in a vacuum and hampered Myrddin's flight with headwinds and gusts, and sharp blasts of wind that Myrddin deflected or dodged. Myrddin attacked relentlessly, bombarding the clone with explosions of energy alternating with scattered releases of whatever he managed to suck in while close to the ground.

Later, Myrddin was shoved against a wall by the clone who then pummelled him with repeated blasts of wind. The clone then got close enough to trap Myrddin in his vacuum and Myrddin gave up fighting, focusing his attention on trying to escape. The clone caught him, knocked the staff from his hand, and choked him with the vacuum. Regent caused the clone to lose his grip on Myrddin's neck and air returned, thrusting Myrddin against the wall. He then fell to the ground where the clone approached him. Skitter and Regent attempted to stop the clone, but the clone managed to kill Myrddin by stabbing him in the throat.[45]

At one point, Tohu copied his powers.[71]

Trivia[]

  • Wildbow commented that Myrddin is not a reference to Harry Dresden,[1] the protagonist of a short series of urban fantasy that is under two million words by the time of 2014.
  • His superhero cape identity comes from Myrddin Wyllt, the original Welsh source for Merlin of Arthurian Legend.

    “Morrígan.”

    “Looks like the Simurgh.”

  9. 9.0 9.1 “No,” Myrddin agreed. “This is a bad one. Too many possible avenues to cover, too much exposure time across the board.”

We’re doubling down quarantine, and we’ll have a processing center in place shortly. The President is pushing the D.D.I.D measure.

“It’s going to backfire,” Myrddin said. “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it now, and I’ll remind you all I said it with every chance I get, from now until the day I die. It’s going to backfire.”

    I don’t disagree,” Dragon said.

“But you’re helping to enforce it.”

“No offense, I like you, Dragon, but that’s the oldest excuse in the book.”

    I’m merely picking my battles.

There was a tink and she was set on fire, head to toe.

The flames were hot enough and close enough to Krouse that they could have burned him, should have burned him. But he barely felt the warmth of them. Barely felt anything. The Simurgh’s scream had faded, and his own wounded hand was little more than a dull throb. - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  11. “Hey,” Krouse said, turning to the man in armor. There was no response. “Hey, my friend needs-”

“That was reckless,” Myrddin said, speaking over Krouse. “Attacking when we didn’t know the particulars of her power.”

“Two most likely vectors for it,” the armored man said, talking as though he couldn’t hear Krouse. He raised his voice a little to be heard over Gwerrus’ screams. “Either she needed to see me, or there needed to be some correlation between me and the damage done. Smoke plus a nonlethal bullet works as a test for the first case. Besides, priority one is minimizing interactions, right?”

“Yes. But it was still reckless.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.4

“Myrddin just shunted some kid out to minimize contact. I saw some blood. If I mark the location, can we get emergency services here for when he pops back in?”

We’re overloaded. Was it a severe injury?”

    “Bad, but not severe.”

We don’t have the vehicles or personnel to spare, and quarantine will still be in effect.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  13. 13.0 13.1 Krouse stared. It was a section of building. White tile and white walls, a desk, and a metal cabinet with a shattered glass pane. File folders were strewn over the floor and desk. In the midst of it all was a man in a white lab coat. His body had been shattered by the impact.

“Damnation. If we could only look into this…” Armsmaster said.

    “Priority one. Minimize exposure.”

“I know. But this stands to answer a great many questions. If we can find where she opened that portal to-”

“If she’s answering questions for us, we don’t want to know,” Myrddin said. - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  14. 14.0 14.1 “I do. I want to use Scrub’s power in conjunction with another power that draws heavily on accessing other worlds. It’s why I contacted Faultline’s crew. They’re our best bet. Myrddin might work, but he’s unlikely to cooperate. Scapegoat could work too, but I think it’d take too long, and it might need a human sacrifice, having Scrub hit someone who was heavily affected by the goat’s power.” - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4
  15. “You want to tear a hole in reality to send them home?” Tecton asked.

“It’s the best bargaining chip we have, short of a cure for Noelle.”

“How do we even know which world it is?”

“We don’t, but we can ask,” Tattletale said. “What I’m getting at is that this is our best weapon, our best bargaining chip and our best tool. If I’m right, if I‘m close to right, then this is a way to shut powers off at the source.” - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4
  16. “It’s too dangerous,” Myrddin said. He stood by with Miss Militia and Chevalier beside him.

“It’s our best option,” Tattletale said.

“It’s a plan that puts everyone involved at an immense degree of risk, and it costs us time we don’t have.”

“We have a little time,” Tattletale retorted. “I don’t see any movement there, do you?”

“We can’t even guarantee it’ll work,” Myrddin replied. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4

“You’re a cynic,” she said. She smiled a little. “A little magic could temper that, and if you wanted to return the fav-”

    “Check her phone,” Chevalier said.

“I’ll confess I spent all night reading up on you,” Ingenue said.

“I believe it,” Chevalier said. “But the cynic-believer relationship, that was something Myrddin and I joked about. Word for word, your quip just now, you borrowed that from the files.”

    “We didn’t lose!” Newter crowed.

“It was a close call,” Gregor added his own two cents. “Chevalier is leader of Protectorate in Philadelphia. Myrddin leads Protectorate of Chicago. These are people whole world recognizes. They got positions protecting big cities in America because they are strong, because they are smart and talented. We got the job done, as we always do, and we walked away.” - Interlude 5

  22. “Worrying about him is fine,” I said, and the image of Grue sitting at the base of the wall flickered through my mind’s eye, “But the best thing you can do for Raymancer is get through this thing alive, and when you’re done, you can do your job as team leader and find someone who can help him.”

    “Myrddin will do that.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But are you really willing to trust the well-being of your teammate to a supervisor? Wouldn’t it feel better to handle it yourself?”

“Unless I have reason not to, I’ll rely on Myrddin and I’ll feel better doing that,” Tecton replied. “All of this, this whole scenario, the organization of it all, it doesn’t work unless there’s a measure of trust.”

“Okay,” I said. His reply had caught me off guard. I hadn’t expected Tecton to have that kind of faith in his superiors, and I couldn’t be sure if it was my own bias or naiveté on his part that were at fault for this gap in understanding. Even if I were right, though, it wasn’t my place to ‘fix’ him. “You lead the way you have to. Sorry to make assumptions.” - Excerpt from Scourge 19.3
  23. “Are you saying that because you consider yourself the resident dimension manipulator or because you’re afraid it’ll lead to a big revelation about Cauldron?”

I could have imagined it, but I could have sworn my bugs were aware of a collective intake of breath. Not everyone present, not even one in five… but people did react.

    How far did this reach?

“What are you talking about?” Myrddin asked.

“No? I’m not seeing anything from you. Guess you’re in the clear,” Tattletale replied. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4
  24. I’d hoped it was clear – there’s shared information and media between universes (see chapter 3.3 or something like that where Dr. Haywire is first brought up), enough that Krouse and his friends know about the heroes in the other world, not so much that someone who isn’t a cape geek like Jess would know the details about the Simurgh’s power. - Comment by Wildbow on Migration 17.3

Myrddin, for his part, coupled versatility with raw power to devastating effect. He had a bag of tricks and switched from one to another without hesitation. Echidna spewed a stream of bodies and gore, and Myrddin drew a dark sign into the air, suctioning the incoming matter into it. I sensed Chevalier and Tecton slamming their weapons into the nearest surfaces to avoid being pulled in, catching hold of allies who weren’t so capable. Then my own bugs were yanked toward the crevice and violently crushed against all of the other debris, leaving me momentarily blind in that area. More of my bugs flowed in, giving me time to see Chevalier delivering a series of powerful sword strikes and cannon shots at Echidna, not letting up. He paused, throwing himself into a side-alley as Noelle tried to stomp on him, and Myrddin released the matter he’d suctioned in as a condensed bullet of gore, dust, crushed bodies and dead bugs.

Perhaps the strongest thing about the partnership between the two heroes was how well it accommodated others. Heroes with ranged powers were free to unload on Echidna while the other two fought, and heroes like Tecton could offer further support, destroying the ground beneath her feet. She was big enough now that he couldn’t trap her, but he could make her stumble, or bring concrete from the nearby buildings raining down on top of her. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5
  27. “I don’t blame you,” she said. “I loved Hero. I loved Legend, and Eidolon, and Myrddin. I know what it means to pass through hell together, to take a desperate breath for air, to clutch for clarity of mind, and help each other find the briefest of respite in the little things, only to plunge into that hell once more. The little jokes, the familiarity, the gestures and small kindnesses, they count for a lot, when you’ve been through what we’ve been through-” - Excerpt from Cell 22.4
  28. “I’m very much the same, Lookout. I made… almost no friends, over the years. Chevalier, Myrddin, Miss Militia. I’m not even sure most would look at those relationships and think of them as friendships.” - Excerpt from From Within 16.1
  29. 29.0 29.1 29.2 Myrddin waved his staff, and the window shattered. With another movement of his staff, he plunged down into the room, landing with an audible impact.

Krouse had a better look at the guy: A brown cloak-and-robe combination that might have been burlap, but with a heavier material beneath. If the raised metal collar around his neck was any indication, Myrddin was wearing some kind of armor or protective gear beneath the robe. It should have been heavy, but he wasn’t having any apparent difficulty. His staff was a gnarled stick of dense wood, worn by weather. The upper half of his face was hidden behind a metal visor that served more to cast his face in shadow than to be actual armor. He sported a thick, well trimmed beard. Brown, not white. - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  30. Krouse turned to Myrddin. “My friend’s dying. Can you help her?”

Myrddin walked ahead, dismissing the smoke with a wave of the craggy wooden stick he carried. - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  31. Myrddin Carried several pocket dimensions, flinging them out and activating them for a selection of dimension-specific effects. - Parahuman List, bolded edit by Wildbow

He has access to pocket dimensions, like a vacuum, one with heat and concussive flame, etc. He uses runes to 'code' the gates and control output/input. - Comment by Wildbow on Cauldron Discord
  33. 33.0 33.1 Kaisheng21: oh, quick question while you're here
was he flying via pocket dimensions or was he just flying artillery-ish

    Wildbow: Stated above.

Kyakan: per the quote above it's a result of him applying the pocket dimensions - Conversation with Wildbow on Cauldron Discord
  34. 34.0 34.1 34.2 Myrddin shifted his staff, and Krouse tensed.

Where the staff-tip moved, a thread of blinding light was drawn in the air, loose and loopy, like the light trail from a sparkler.

The light exploded outward with a concussive force, and both Krouse and Noelle were slammed against the walls. The shape of the trail Myrddin had drawn meant the resulting blast passed over and to either side of his lantern-bearing teammate. Her clothes were barely ruffled.

He has personal dimensions he carries around with him, Krouse theorized. And each one follows different rules. One holds banished people, maybe that one holds energy or compressed air, and he just needs to open it a crack to let the stuff out. - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  35. 35.0 35.1 35.2 Myrddin was below Legend and Alexandria, recuperating from holding Echidna at bay. He took to the air, flying up to Echidna and the Eidolon-clone from behind.

He pointed his staff at the Eidolon, and his target disappeared.

The air the Psycho-Eidolon had compressed expanded all at once, sending Myrddin flying off course and Echidna rolling sideways, over a line of parked cars. For the moment, the vacuum was gone.

Myrddin set himself down on the ground. He wasn’t using his power against Echidna or the clones, which suggested that his reserves were low.

The Eidolon-clone reappeared. He turned and spotted Myrddin. The two started fighting, the Eidolon trying to close the gap and trap Myrddin in his vacuum, which was considerably smaller in area than before, but growing every second. He hampered the self-professed wizard’s flying with headwinds and gusts, and sharp blasts of wind that Myrddin deflected or dodged. Myrddin, for his part, attacked relentlessly, pummeling the Eidolon with explosions of energy alternating with scattered releases of whatever he managed to suck in while close to the ground. - Scourge 19.6
  36. 36.0 36.1 36.2 Sic him against warlords and monsters, get video footage where necessary, bonus points if you have video where Myrddin is helping out and Chevalier is wading through a sea of ensnaring green mist, fire, or a storm of lightning (with precautions made) to punch out or cut down a seemingly unbreakable Brute. - Comment by Wildbow on Reddit, archived on Spacebattles
  37. 37.0 37.1 Myrddin sent things to another dimension. Monster has hostage? Send Hostage to a pocket dimension for a duration. This is why he told Dragon to mark the area and send help for when Krouse pops back into reality. But dimension shenanigans meant it acted differently. - Comment by Wildbow on Sufficient Velocity
  38. 38.0 38.1 Kyakan: when he banished Krouse to protect him from the c53s the Simurgh released he gave Dragon a location and ETA on Krouse's return

Wildbow: Pulled them into a pocket
    Spat them out.

Kyakan: but if he could pull Krouse back out at will I don't think that would be necessary
with Echidna he had to struggle to keep her contained, though I have no idea how that works

Wildbow: Krouse's case was just putting him into a pocket that was set to release him a time later.
Echidna is a mess of ongoing power and powerstuff. Portals and interdimensional stuff gets wonky/strained when they overlap/interplay. - Conversation with Wildbow on Cauldron Discord
  39. 39.0 39.1 Myrddin caught up and hit her with one of his ‘spells’. Echidna promptly disappeared in a clap of thunder, and Myrddin went very still, floating in the air.

From his controlled breathing and lack of celebration, I could only assume that Myrddin was concentrating. Echidna wasn’t dead and gone, only held at bay for the time being. I was willing to bet it was the same effect he’d used to carry Chevalier, Tecton and his other teammates into the fight in the alleyway. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5
  40. “Stand down,” Myrddin ordered.

“I’ll pass,” Krouse replied. He looked at the injured P.R.T. soldier, “We’ve got-”

“Begone,” Myrddin said, pointing his staff.

The officer vanished in a cloud of mist.

“-A hostage,” Krouse finished. - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  41. Echidna hadn’t used her power yet. She’d absorbed enough capes, but something was holding her back. I wondered if her regeneration drew on the same pool of flesh-generation that made the clones and she couldn’t make clones while healing the kind of heavy damage the Triumvirate was dishing out. Maybe there was some other drawback.

The ‘shoulders’ of her lower body scraped and dragged against the sides of buildings as she stampeded through the back alleyways. She kicked a dumpster and sent it careening as she ran, brushed against a fire escape with enough speed and force that it was ripped from the brick wall.

She was very nearly out of my power’s reach when Myrddin cut her off. He waved his staff and a group of heroes materialized around him. Tecton and Chevalier were among them. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5
  42. Wildbow: Think of her as a portal to 'meat' that's constantly pushing out to fit an echidna-shaped mold, as she perpetually regenerates. As she eats dead matter and adds to her mass, she basically extends that mold.

Archon: Oh, that's how Scion worked too right? Well less messy.

Wildbow: It's pretty fundamental to a lot of powers and how they work.
You'd run into a similar 'struggling to contain' thing with Myrddin trying to keep someone in a pocket dimension while they were outputting a huge blaster power.

  43. Overall, our side was winning, but we weren’t winning fast. Nearly a third of us had fallen when Shatterbird hit, and more were losing in this chaos that followed.

Which made this the moment, fittingly, when Echidna popped back into existence.

Eidolon and Legend had been doing what they could from range, and now they were forced to deal with Echidna, leaving the rest of us to deal with the remaining clones. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5

  46. Echidna charged Myrddin and the heroes that accompanied him. He used his staff to draw something into the air. My bugs could feel a vibration, see the white blur of a light source.

The sign he’d drawn exploded outward, striking Echidna on her right side. It was enough to alter her course, and her shoulder slammed into the corner of one building. Her body dragged against the building’s face until that she had to stop and pull away. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5
  47. 47.0 47.1 Tidal Wave.

The water surging around us stopped abruptly, evaporated into a mist in a second. Swirling, the mist began drifting.

Myrddin, working with Eidolon. They stood in the center of the road, Eidolon turning the water into mist, while Myrddin gathered it. Myrddin’s wooden stick was held aloft, and the mist was forming a sphere the size of a beachball at one end.

Ok, I could almost buy the wizard angle, seeing that. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.3
  48. 48.0 48.1 Leviathan leaped from the roof of a nearby building, landing in the midst of one group that was still reeling from the wave, started tearing through them.
    [...]
Myrddin pointed his staff and launched that orb at Leviathan. It hit harder than anything yet, and the brute was sent flying into the interior of a nearby building. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.3
  49. "Myrddin caught up with me, collected all the radioactive stuff," Wanton said. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.3
  50. “Banish one?” the man with the spheres asked.

    “Already banished their hostage.”

“Want me to grab one to take into custody?”

“Be my guest, Anomaly.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  51. “Can you open doors between worlds?” Krouse asked.

Myrddin went stiff. “No. Are you implying you’re one of the creatures from the world she opened a door to?”

    She. The Simurgh.

“Nah,” Krouse replied, climbing to his feet. “Just wondering.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  52. Armsmaster sighed. “I know. Can you shift this into one of your pocket dimensions?”

“I get bad interactions if I transition something in of one of my dimensions and back, or if I take things out of one dimension and put them into another. It doesn’t compartmentalize into the dimension properly if it’s been elsewhere too recently. Whether these people and objects came from somewhere halfway across the globe or some pocket dimension, I don’t think we want to test our luck and risk something disastrous.”

Krouse startled at that. Is that what happened to me? Some bad interaction of inter-dimensional crap?

“I’m thinking white phosphor?” Armsmaster suggested. Myrddin nodded. - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  53. 53.0 53.1 “Any insights, Myrddin?” a man in armor spoke.
    [...]
“A protective power. I just got a glimpse of the idea behind it. Retribution,” the first man said. He was behind the man in armor, wearing a robe. “Her power’s based around retribution for damage done.”

“Damage reflection?” the man in armor asked. “Or does she get more durable as you attack her?”

“More likely to be the former than the latter.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  54. Armsmaster isn't one of the original wards. Nor are Rime, Bastion, or Myrddin. - Wildbow on Reddit, archived on Spacebattles
  55. He backed out of Chevalier’s data until he was at the original screen. He checked the samples Accord had provided him with.
    Select sub-database:
    A) PRT (Protectorate, Wards) samples
    B) Non-PRT (evidence database) samples
    C) Misc samples
Further investigation revealed the full truth. Accord had gotten his hands on a database of DNA from countless members of the Protectorate and the Wards, as well as scraps of material from certain powers, where traces remained behind. - Interlude 19.x
  56. “No,” Gwerrus growled in her deep voice. “Stupid boy.”

    “Begone,” a man intoned.

Krouse felt himself slip from her grasp. He dropped to the ground.

“Do it quickly,” another man said.

Krouse turned to look, but he saw everything through a monochrome haze. His own hand seemed smoky, faint.

    I’m a ghost? - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  57. “Right. Where did our target land?”

Two hundred feet away, down your four o’clock, Armsmaster.

    “How are we for exposure?”

You two are good for another seventeen minutes at the exposure you’re facing. Twenty if we push it. I can have a flight unit to you shortly.

Krouse hurried to follow them as they changed direction and began briskly walking toward the end of the street..

Myrddin spoke up, “How’s the fight going?”

It goes well. But we can’t let our guards down.” - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  58. Dragon chimed in, her voice sounding from the armbands on their wrists, “Can’t call in a strike until fifteen minutes after the Simurgh is gone. Mark the area. I’ve got another danger site a quarter-mile to your six o’clock. Then we’re getting you clear.

    “Got it,” Armsmaster said.

Armsmaster tossed a small canister into the middle of the section of laboratory, they cordoned off the area with red tape, and then they left. Armsmaster used a grappling hook to fly to a nearby rooftop while Myrddin took to the air. - Excerpt from Migration 17.4
  59. A quarantine processing center is already established at St. Mary’s Hospital, servicing city residents who were not evacuated before temporary blockades were set up. - Excerpt from Migration 17.6
  60. “But the Travelers are from another world,” I said. “Aren’t they?”

“The Simurgh,” he said, simply. “Madison, Wisconsin, one and a half years ago. She opened a dimensional gate. You were there, Myrddin. You met Trickster and Echidna.”

Myrddin’s eyes widened. “The hospital room.” - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4
  61. Krouse stepped over to the window. The street was lit only by the minimal moonlight that filtered through the clouds. There were police cars and fire trucks massing inside the quarantine area, as well as black vans with pale purple stripes and the letters P.R.T. on the sides. The people outside the black vans had uniforms like the man he’d just beat up, only they wore helmets.

There were capes, too. Krouse could see the one with the brown cloak and staff. Myrddin. A half dozen superheroes clustered around him. His team? It was a surprise that so many heroes were still present in the city. Did they have to undergo their own kind of quarantine processing as well? - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  62. Myrddin was flying, now. Two of his subordinates were advancing as well. One had a beachball-sized ball of jet black extending a foot away from his splayed hands, crackling with arcs of electricity that were both absolutely black and somehow still glowing enough to be seen in the dark. The other figure was an Asian woman with a painted mask and a giant lantern in her hands.

“We have a fight incoming,” Krouse said, backing away from the window. - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  63. Then he saw it. A belated arrival to the party. A police car coming down the street in the distance, maneuvering to pull in and join the ranks of officers and rescue personnel on site.

Krouse turned his head, trying to catch Noelle and the crowd in the same field of vision.

He swapped her for someone at the back of the crowd. A moment later, gathering enough air, he swapped himself.

Krouse found himself sitting backwards in the driver’s seat. He flipped himself over and, as nonchalantly as he could manage, pulled away, heading deeper into the quarantine area. - Excerpt from Migration 17.7
  64. I couldn’t afford to dwell on what might have happened to Tattletale. I wiped beads of water from the lenses of my mask with my gloved hands, pushed my hair out of my face, and made a note of my bugs. There were scant few in the way of bugs that could navigate in this storm. Myrddin had banished the water from the wave, somehow, but the downpour was making the streets flood fast enough that I didn’t trust anything to crawl. No, my power was dead useless, here. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.3
  65. “Listen!” the voice that cut through the shouts and the frantic chatter was authoritative, strong.

Armsmaster. He had Myrddin, Eidolon and Chevalier just behind him. People turned to listen, myself included. - Excerpt from Extermination 8.3
  66. Myrddin and Eidolon moved from the coast to the ‘lake’ in the upper end of Downtown. I saw and sensed Leviathan leap from the water like a dolphin cresting the waves, moving no less than two hundred feet in the air, toward the pair, lashing out with his afterimage in every direction.

    Myrddin down, BX-9. - Extermination 8.5
  67. “It’s worth noting,” Legend said, “That we tracked Manton down. He and Siberian’s master are the same person. Dragon and Defiant have a bead on the Nine. They expect a confrontation to start soon.” - Excerpt from Scourge 19.4
  68. He’d have to take another route. He withdrew a sample of Myrddin’s tissue, then started splicing it with one seed and the ruined fragments of the Simurgh’s feather.

It was lunacy, tampering with Endbringer-related materials, but he couldn’t shake the idea that he was on to something. He’d sustain the Endbringer tissues with other living tissue that could feed it energy or nutrients. His seeds would bridge the gap. It would take ten or fifteen minutes before he saw any real results. There was other work to do in the meantime. - Interlude 19.x
  69. Scourge 19.4
  70. - Excerpt from Scourge 19.5
  71. Tohu, for her part, had Glaistig Uaine, Eidolon and Myrddin’s faces.

The Endbringers, come to the rescue. I wished I could have felt relieved. It was a reprieve, a chance to get our footing. But there was an ominousness to it. - Speck 30.5
