Borrowed from English once, from Middle English ones, from Old English ānes. Patterned after makaisa (β€œto be able to deceive”, literally β€œto get one of something”) and maisahan (β€œto be able to be fooled or deceived”, literally β€œto potentially gotten of one of something”). See also onse (β€œtrickery”).
