Chapter description[]

Sunbeam sits beside Nightheart at the Gathering, worried about Tigerstar's refusal to stop occupying RiverClan and the conflict it may cause between the Clans. She sees Icewing sitting amongst the deputies and notices Splashtail with his Clanmates, and she wonders about his plan to find a false medicine cat. At Hawkwing's prompting, Tigerstar declares his intention to continue occupying RiverClan, and when Harestar points out StarClan's disapproval, Tigerstar insists that he is only helping. He asks Icewing to speak for RiverClan, and she expresses belief that Tigerstar is truly just helping RiverClan, but Duskfur, Splashtail, and Mallownose protest. Leafstar inquires about RiverClan's progress, and Sunbeam notices that Mothwing seems angry. Tigerstar informs the Clans that Frostpaw is now training to be a warrior, leaving RiverClan without access to StarClan. Crowfeather suggests that Tigerstar may have influenced Frostpaw to make that decision, but Frostpaw defends both him and herself.

Leafstar recommends that Tigerstar leave RiverClan because of this new development, a sentiment that Sunbeam silently supports. Sunbeam wonders if a new RiverClan medicine cat will be announced, but no one speaks up. Tigerstar insists that they must wait, rather than pulling ShadowClan out of RiverClan, angering the Clans. Duskfur suggests that Icewing could lead, but Tigerstar argues that she is not StarClan-approved and that he has kept his distance. Mallownose reveals that ShadowClan warriors are still in RiverClan's camp, angering Leafstar, but Tigerstar says that Cloverfoot and Icewing are working together. This prompts Leafstar to confront Harestar and Bramblestar about fighting ShadowClan since RiverClan has expressed their discontent, worrying Sunbeam. However, Harestar and Bramblestar both reject her proposition, valuing peace.

Squirrelflight is upset by Bramblestar's decision, supporting Leafstar, and Bramblestar tries to argue in favor of peace, but Squirrelflight accuses him of being afraid to fight, causing him to remark that she may be a better leader. Nightheart is shaken by this, and Sunbeam tries to comfort him. Crowfeather remarks that ThunderClan may also be without a leader, angering Squirrelflight, but Hawkwing intervenes before a fight can break out and upset StarClan. Bramblestar again refuses to help Leafstar, and Sunbeam is concerned about him and disturbed by Nightheart's worry for Bramblestar. Tigerstar reasserts his intentions to help RiverClan, and Harestar ends the Gathering, with many cats appearing bothered by Bramblestar's behavior. Sunbeam sees Berryheart gathered with her followers, and she tries to speak to Nightheart about it, but sees that he is approaching ThunderClan. She tries to stop him, but he insists on speaking with Finchlight, leaving her to fret over RiverClan.
