Frostpaw observes the camp, where the RiverClan warriors lie injured, and feels guilty for failing to find a new leader, remembering how Tigerstar had attacked and taken over. She sees Tigerstar jump onto the Highstump, and she turns to care for Mallownose's injuries as Mallownose questions how RiverClan can listen to ShadowClan instead of Owlnose, prompting Frostpaw to remember Owlnose's refusal to become leader. Tigerstar attempts to sort out hunting patrols, but RiverClan ignores him, and Splashtail asks why Owlnose is not giving orders. Tigerstar, Havenpelt, and Podlight ask Owlnose what happened, and after hesitating, Owlnose explains that he does not wish to be leader, to his Clan's ire. In response, Tigerstar again asserts his own authority, thanking Owlnose for his honesty. Just as it seems that RiverClan's warriors will attack, Harelight stops them, giving out orders. His Clanmates are suspicious of his relationship with ShadowClan, and Duskfur turns on Owlnose, but Icewing talks her down, telling her that they need to follow along with Tigerstar for now.

Frostpaw wonders if she should confess that she believes her visions are false, but as she is about to do so, Mothwing sends her to tend to Shimmerpelt's wounds instead, telling her that she still needs Frostpaw's help. As Frostpaw is approaching the medicine den, she notices Icewing watching her, but Icewing's attention is taken by a fight between Mallownose and a ShadowClan warrior. While Frostpaw prepares horsetail, Tigerstar announces that he is leaving, though Cloverfoot and two more warriors will stay, to RiverClan's dismay. Icewing talks her Clanmates down, and Tigerstar tells her to work with Cloverfoot. Duskfur questions why Splashtail cannot lead, but Tigerstar points out that the Clan needs an experienced warrior in charge. He says that RiverClan should focus on finding a leader, and Frostpaw hides from her Clanmates' gazes. She fetches more herbs, feeling anxious about the future, but just as she leaves the medicine den, she is confronted by Icewing, who asks to speak with her later.
