Ballista is a supporting antagonist in the Animator vs. Animation fanfiction They're Sticks, Probably by HakureiRyuu.

He is a member of the mercenary team hired by Victim to help in his plans of revenge against Alan Becker. Compared to his teammates, who are more professional and calm in their job, Ballista is ruthless and sadistic, taking joy in his actions.

Appearance[]

Ballista is a short, pixelated stick figure with a filled-in head.

History[]

Backstory[]

Ballista's backstory is unknown besides him being a mercenary working alongside Striker, Primal and Hazard that has done bounty hunting in the past. Shortly before the events of the story, he and his teammates were hired by Victim to help in his plans.

They're Sticks, Probably[]

Ballista is first mentioned when he's chasing the Chosen One around the city, shooting at the walls of a tenement and endangering its citizens to find the target. However, Chosen manages to avoid him. Later on, he and his teammates hunt him throughout the city, but ultimately lose him when he escapes into Alex's PC. Later on, he is ordered to enter Purple's former MAC by Striker, where he sees the Villagers. Trying to figure out how their code differentiates from normal Minecraft, he butchers several of them and splits their bodies to look inside at it, while also getting into a fight with the Ender Dragon, killing and decapitating her in front of her baby.

Ballista later finds the Nether portal on the MAC and enters it, where he reunites with Striker and shows-off the dragon's severed head. After examinating it and showing off a command block, he tells Ballista to go back to the MAC, which he does. However, the surviving Villagers have already sealed up the stronghold by then, leaving Ballista to destroy it in a rage. When he enters the End, he quickly realises that Green, Blue and Purple have followed him there. He prepares to kill them, but the stick figures manage to evacuate to safety and reunite with Purple's former subjects. After seeing the injured baby dragon after Ballista's slaughter of its mother, the sticks decide to get rid of the mercenary for everyone's safety.

The three confront Ballista in battle. During it, he destroys Purple's elytra and nearly kills them, and when Green throws him off the island, he reveals a helicopter rotor from his head to fly himself back up. Using the opportunity, Purple tackles Ballista straight into the void, with Green and Blue barely saving the former while the latter falls to his death. However, all three expect him to respawn due to Minecraft rules.

As they predicted, Ballista would respawn, but inside Rocket Corp headquarters. When the Stick Gang breaks in to free Yellow and King from imprisonment, Ballista would ambush Green and the Second Coming by blowing up a wall and trying to shoot them, all while cackling. The two panic as they realise their plan to distract Striker has failed and he's likely after Chosen, who has also broken into the building, as they're forced into confronting Ballista in battle. Off-screen, Ballista stops and lets both of them go on Striker's orders. Later on, Ballista confronts the heroes alongside Striker and Primal to reveal that Victim has paid them for their help, so they will no longer be antagonizing them due to not having a motive. Upon receiving an answer as to where Hazard is, the mercs make their leave.

Following Hazard being freed and Victim being defeated, the mercs discuss the new job opportunities they might get in the chaos. As Primal proposes working as security for the rich and powerful, all four mercs agree, and ultimately decide to go their separate ways until things go back to normal.

Personality[]

Ballista has no dialogue in the fic besides one sentence. However, it's still pretty clear that he, in sheer contrast to the composed Striker, focused Primal and too enigmatic to say Hazard, Ballista truly loves his job. He laughs and smiles several times throughout the story, showing his sadism, and is ruthlessly merciless and aggressive, nearly butchering a whole village as part of his job. However, when off-work, Ballista is more playful and hyperactive in a harmless way. Additionally, he doesn't target people when he's not "on the job", showing hints of pragmatism and maybe even honor.
