The story of the Protective Jingoist Yuri Briar From Spy x Family and it's movie, Spy x Family: CODE White
Background[]
Yuri was born in the region of East Nielsberg, 20 years prior to the events of the series, possibly somewhere during the 40's. He was born 7 years after his sister, Yor. Yuri and his family lived in poverty for most of his childhood.
After the death of their parents during the war between Ostania and Westalis, Yor took the responsibility of raising her little brother all by herself. This led to her taking the job as assassin from a very young age in order to provide for the house and give Yuri education. Yor acted as a motherly figure for Yuri during his childhood, which would eventually lead to him becoming emotionally dependant on her and developing his sister complex that would follow him to his adulthood. Yuri distinctively remembers a day in which he, as a child, told his sister that when he grew up he wanted to get married to her, to which Yor jokingly responded that she'd be waiting for him.
During his early adult years, Yuri Briar would work as a diplomat for the Ostanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs until he was invited into the State Security Service, which he would join a year later. Despite this, Yuri would still use his former job as a coverup for his secret endeavors at the SSS, mostly in order to not alarm his sister.
Introduction Arc[]
Yuri is first mentioned in Yor's introduction arc, where he makes a phone call to her asking how she's doing and if she had already found a boyfriend. Yuri also mentions that he'd soon be getting promoted on his job, possibly making an allusion to his rank as Second Lieutenant at the SSS. Once Yuri starts throwing around ideas about introducing Yor to someone, she quickly rebutes him by lying that she already had a boyfriend. Yuri is elated by the news and tells her that she should bring him to the party his friend Dominic would be throwing that week, saying that he would later call him for a full report on how her boyfriend was. He ends the call by saying that if her boyfriend turns out to be a bad person, he would not think twice before splitting them apart and says that he's excited to meet him. This lie would lead to Yor crossing paths with Loid and Anya a few days later and asking him to pretend to be her boyfriend at Dominic's party. They would later on get married on paper in order to introduce Yor as Anya's stepmother in her admission to Eden College.
Secret Police Arc[]
One night on his way to his apartment, Yuri bumps into his friend Dominic. While the two are chatting, Yuri asks how was the party and what did he think of his sister's boyfriend. Dominic finds it strange that he hasn't met her husband yet and congratulates him for his sister's marriage. Upon hearing that Yor had supposedly gotten married over a year ago, Yuri is absolutely shocked. Days later, he would call Yor, saying that he would make a visit to their house anytime soon in order to meet her family.
At the SSS HQ, Yuri gets the task to interrogate Jim Hayward, a man who was caught exchanging intel with WISE for money in the City Hall. At first, during the interrogation, Yuri acts as his usual laid-back and cheerful persona, gushing about his sister and her marriage, but quickly drops his usual mood after laying photographic evidence of Jim's treason he had with him. He also mentions that he's aware of the fact he had been using his money from the intel in order to engage in extramarital affairs. Now knowing his connections to WISE, Yuri asks him if he knows anything about Twilight, explaining that he had been after the spy for quite a while and that he's his arch-nemesis. After Jim refuses to comply, Yuri slams his head on the table, shoving his face in an ashtray, all the while belittling him for his infidelity with his family.
After the interrogation is over, Yuri heads over to the Forger household carrying a enormous bouquet of roses for his sister. While on his way, he happily struts down the street, excited to finally see his sister, who he hasn't seen in a long time, again. After arriving at their apartment, Yuri and Loid are both immediately suspicious of each other. Yuri is suspicious if Loid is really worthy of his sister's hand while Loid is suspicious if Yuri could potentially cause harm to his family and his mission.
As Yuri makes himself at home, while still showing animosity towards his brother-in-law, Yuri tells Yor that he still hasn't processed the fact that she got married over a year ago and asked her why didn't she tell him sooner. Yor decides to make up an excuse on the fly and says she "forgot to tell him". Despite the terrible nature of the excuse, Yuri buys into her story and believes her, much to Loid's surprise. After the husband puts out some snacks for them, Yuri shows a bottle of wine that he had brought for the couple. This was part of his plan of getting Loid drunk and reveal his true self. While the three of them are eating, Yuri starts interrogating Loid about his relationship with his sister, asking very specific questions about their first date and how they met among other things. After Yuri finds out that the couple doesn't have any kind of pet name for each other, he breaks down and starts gobbling up wine until Yor and Loid tell him to calm down.
After calming himself down, Yuri starts talking about a trip he had recently made to the country of Hugaria, which arouses some suspicion in Loid, who then starts asking questions about his trip. Upon analyzing Yuri's answers and noticing some discrepancies in them, such a the price of the wine he had supposedly bought on his trip, Loid recognizes his dialogue pattern as a fake story template used in SSS training. This, combined with a background check on Yuri done by Franky earlier on led Loid to decipher that Yuri was actually part of the SSS. Despite realizing how being around a SSS officer could be dangerous, Loid decides that keeping him around would be a good idea, as he could potentially be a good source for enemy intel, as long as he doesn't find out about his real identity as Twilight. Other than that, Loid also concludes that Yor does not know about this secret life of his, due to her never even bringing it up on the conversation. This however, would later on cause Loid to suspect Yor's intentions and affiliations with the SSS on the following chapters.
After a bit more of talking between the three, Yuri loses his composure again and goes on a drunken rant against Loid. He tells him how much his sister cared for him when he was a child and how he decided to make his life goal as an adult to protect his sister at all costs, all the while showcasing a bit of his jealousy towards him. Yuri then tells Loid that if he wants to be Yor's husband then he might as well be capable of protecting her better than he does and then asks him if he thinks he's capable of this task. Loid responds by telling him that he and his daughter Anya both love Yor as much as, if not, more than he does, making her blush. He also says that he's willing to go above and beyond in protecting her. Surprised by the determination on his words, Yuri gets confrontational once more, telling Loid that he does not believe him and calling him a liar.
While the two men are having an argument, Yor accidentally spills a glass of water on the table. Both her and Loid reach for it at the same time to clean it, causing the two to accidentally touch hands which made the two blush and recoil in their seats in embarrassment. Noticing the odd behavior for a married couple, Yuri starts questioning the legitimacy of their relationship to their faces. After the two fail to convince him that they are "super lovey-dovey" with each other, Yuri demands for the two of them to kiss in front of him right then and there. Loid accepts the challenge, seeing it as not so much of a big deal, as he recalls having slept with various women for the sake of his several previous missions. Yor, however, is anxious and embarrassed, as this would be the first time she would be getting kissed by a man, let alone her husband, who she allegedly viewed platonically outside the scheme of their fake relationship. Thinking she couldn't bring herself to do it on her own, Yor chugs the remaining wine on the bottle, quietly telling Loid that she would not be able to do this while sober. While the two are going in for a drunken kiss, Yuri immediately regrets his decision and starts shouting at them to stop, saying he couldn't bear seeing his dear sister kissing another man. On the midst of peer pressure and embarrassment, Yor panics and slaps Yuri on the face, with enough force to throw him across the room.
After Yuri gets up, bleeding from the slap, he immediately starts crying, admitting his defeat, telling Loid that he "could have his sister's lips for now", a comment that embarrassed Yor, who slaps him a second time. While an injured and tipsy Yuri struggles to get up, a drunk Yor helps him get back on his feet while apologizing to him. Seeing this, Loid smiles and starts complimenting the relationship between the two, saying how much he likes the fact that they are always there for each other. Somehow, this angers Yuri who rushes over to the front door, saying that he'd be back someday to get his revenge on Loid and expose how much of a terrible husband he truly was. Before sprinting out, Yuri even threatens to execute Loid if he makes Yor cry even once, which Yor finds odd, but brushes it off. On his way home, Yuri goes to the hospital, offscreen, as advised by two civilians he asked for the directions to the train station. There, he would get stitches and bandages for his injuries from the slap.
The next day, Yuri goes to work as usual. In the SSS's locker room, he meets a coworker of his, who asks him about the visit at his sister's was and how her husband was. Yuri says that he was a "nice guy", but tells him that he suspects Loid because of how friendly he was to him, saying that because of that, he thinks he might be a spy. After asking if he had any proof of that claim, Yuri realizes he forgot to put any hearing devices on their bedroom in order to have evidence of his bad behavior, but quickly takes it back as a bad idea, since he could potentially catch the two having an intimate moment and that his heart could not bear hearing his sister's voice in such obscene situations. His fellow Lieutenant coworker then advises him to get over his sister complex as this could impact his performance at his job negatively. Yuri then gets himself suited up and goes to work, while vowing to himself that if Loid ever makes his sister cry, he wouldn't hesitate on intervening on their lives.
Doggy Crisis Arc[]
Yuri makes a brief cameo in the Doggy Crisis arc. He, alongside various other Secret Police officers are tasked with capturing the warmongering terrorist Keith Kepler, who was planning on assassinating the westalian minister, Brantz during his stay in Ostania to attend a summit. Yuri, using his front job as a diplomat from Ostania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, meets the minister at the Berlint Reception Hall and offers to have his car leading the escort. Unbeknownst to him, the person he talks to was actually Loid Forger, disguised as Brantz, who was using himself as a decoy. While the cars are taking off, the undercover spy ends up driving away from the escort's route after noticing that Keith was following them, much to Yuri's confusion.
Midterm Exams Arc[]
During the Midterm Exams arc, Yuri acts as a major supporting character. While Yor is trying to better her cooking skills with the aid of her coworker, Camilla, Dominic invites Yuri to do taste tests of his sister's food. Yuri happily shows up at Camilla's house, excited to see his sister again and thanking Camilla for her help. However, he frowns as soon as he learns that Yor was doing this in order to cook for her husband, Loid. After Yor finishes cooking her attempt at a minestrone (which goes horribly), Dominic asks Yuri to do the taste test, jokingly telling him to "certify it isn't poison". After taking a bite, Yuri is ecstatic, saying that it tastes great and even asking for seconds. Dominic and Camilla aren't so lucky, however, as they collapse to the floor as soon as they eat it. The same thing happens when Yor tries to cook a meatball, with Yuri happily gobbling up her terrible food to the point that Dominic has to tell him to stop.
Camilla then points out that the reason why he might be so acceptable of his sister's food is because that was pretty much the only thing he ate throughout his entire life since they grew up without parents. With this in mind, Camilla asks the Briar siblings if they recalled any kind of food their parents made while they were still alive, to which Yuri responds by telling a vague memory of a stew that their mother used to prepare for them when they were really young. Yor then tries to replicate the stew with the help of her coworker, by vaguely recalling the ingredients she remembered in the taste. After the stew is done, Camilla takes a sip of it and says it actually tastes pretty good. Yuri agrees, saying it's delicious, but feels as if there is something missing. Camilla then recalls that people from East Nielsberg usually add sour cream to the stew and proceeds to pour some in the soup. After taking a sip again, Yuri and Yor find it perfect and are immediately reminded of their childhood. Afterwards, they both leave Camilla's house happily.
As Anya's midterm exams are soon, Yor called Yuri over to help Anya study. When Yuri arrives happily at the Forgers' house, he gets a bit annoyed when he sees that Loid is home. Yor introduces Yuri and Anya to each other and Anya reads Yuri's thoughts, overwhelmed by his sister complex. As Yuri and Loid talk for a bit, Yuri gets annoyed as he thinks that Loid is mocking him and the State Security Service about not capturing Twilight during the Keith Kelper incident, but Loid only tries getting intel. As Yuri, Yor and Anya sit down on the couch, Anya tries getting on his good side by saying she wants to study so she can feed 'mama' lots of yummy stuff. Yuri gets overwhelmed and thinks Anya is an angel, but then thinks that Anya just wants to get Yor's attention, which annoys him. As Yuri asks Anya to solve a problem, Anya reads Yuri's thoughts and knows the answer. Yuri says that maybe she doesn't need to study after all, but Anya says it was just a lucky guess, which Yuri reluctantly agrees.
After Anya and Yuri study a long time, they lay on the floor and Yuri asks Anya if she understood what he teached her. Anya says she doesn't know what he means, and Yuri gets mad and leaves the Forger house and as he grabs his coat, he thinks that if he studied too, he could captured Twilight back in the Doggy Crisis Arc. Yuri apologizes to Yor and says he has to leave. When Yor makes a comment about how he is impatient like ever and that she spent time making some cookies, Yuri enters the house almost in an instant, eats all of the cookies, then leaves and falls down the stairs as he says how good the cookies are.
Spy x Family: CODE White[]
During Spy x Family: CODE White Yuri plays a minor role. When hearing that his sister is in Frigis, he offers to go to Frigis, but gets denied. Yuri tries going anyway, but is restrained by other SSS Officers. He later appears at the end of movie, after the ship crashed in the ocean and Yuri had to work at the State Security Service to make sure the crash was covered.
Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc[]
During the Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc, Yuri acts as a Major Character. After monitoring an illegal deal, The SSS capture the men involved and one of them try escaping to the window, Yuri is there and the man tries shooting Yuri, but Yuri grabs the man's arm and pins him down, arresting him. Not long after, Yuri gets an assigment about a man named Franklin Perkin, a former Newspaper reporter who is now writing articles and slandering Ostania and sending these reports to Westalis. As Yuri listens in on Franklin's daily life, he also stalks him and finds Franklin throwing the pistol of some boys in the trash, then taking a photo as if making Ostania look like a poor country. When the boys confront Franklin, he scares them, which angers Yuri. As Yuri writes reports about Franklin's life and overhears Franklin's father and Yuri writes that the suspect may do this for family, but in the end throws the report away. Later, at the post office, Franklin slips his manuscripts there, sealing his fate.
4 days later, the State Security Service show up in front of Franklin's apartment complex and they look up at Franklin's window, Franklin being there. Franklin accepts his situation and tells his father that he'll be back soon. When Franklin comes outside, Yuri arrests him and Franklin insults Yuri, by saying Yuri is the Government Dog, while he is the Government Enemy. Yuri says that he'll never do anything to hurt his family and that he also didn't bust in Franklin's house so his father can see how much of a coward his son is. Before Franklin gets taken away, Yuri says that he'll be sure Franklin's father gets money and is cared off, which Franklin thanks Yuri. Later at the SSS HQ, Yuri's boss pats him on the back and tells him that he'll reward him with a great lunch, because of Yuri's accomplishment which Yuri also says that he'll capture Twilight. Later that night, Yuri visits the Forger family and Anya pats his leg and Yor pats his head, which gets Yuri very happy and also Yor telling Yuri that he did a good job at work today and that she'll make him some tea, which makes Yuri very happy.
Cruise Adventure Arc[]
During the Cruise Adventure Arc, Yuri plays a minor role, often being in flashbacks by Yor. Before leaving, Yor spots Yuri in a train, sleeping and when she calls out to him, he wakes up and is surprised by her. As they talk, Yor invites Yuri over for dinner, but he says that he can't come since he's busy(he has business at the State Security Service) and he also insults Loid and Yor asks when they are gonna get along. When Yor asks him if he is eating well, he tells her that he's not a kid anymore and leaves the train, waving at her. When the train goes, he tries running after her, Yor thinking why she's still a killer if Yuri's all grown up. Later, as the First and Second Lieutenant of the SSS are running after a suspect, Yuri collapses and wakes up in the SSS HQ, where he has a cold. Yuri tells the First Lieutenant that when he thinks that Yor is away, he passes out and thinks about her. As he drinks tea, he talks with the First Lieutenant that tells him not to worry and to rest. Yuri drinks the tea and thinks of Yor's herb tea.
When the Forgers come back from their trip, Yuri visits, celebrating his return with his sister as she gifts him a souvenir. As they all sit down, Anya talks about how she feels bad that she lied about her classmates that she's going on a trip. Yuri tells Anya that liars are trash and he deals with them everyday(in his mind trying to justify his hypocrisy for lying to Yor for her sake) and Yor agrees with what Yuri is saying as Anya is surrounded by lying adults. Later, Yuri is in the SSS Locker and eating's Yor's terrible cupcake vigorously while his colleagues look at him.
Red Circus Arc[]
On a regular day at work, Yuri learns from his superior that Anya and her class have been taken hostage by Red Circus terrorists. Although he doesn't care at first, he immediately changes his mind, thinking that Yor will be very sad to see her daughter dead. He asks his superior to go with them but is refused.
Despite being ordered not to do anything, Yuri manages to locate one of the missing buses on his own, then raids the terrorists with other SSS officers, and manages to save the hostages, although he is wounded in the shoulder as a result of the melee.
Mole Hunt Arc[]
Yuri, along with Chloe and his superior, assemble at the sudden order of their boss. They are then assigned to secure agent Winston Wheeler, who has returned from Westalian Intelligence with valuable information.
They meet at the rendezvous point Shellbury, but what they don't know is that Winston is Loid in disguise. Loid offers them to move the meeting place to the park. When they meet in the park, the SSS agents begin to question each other, and Loid says that the green tie and yellow gemstone are their chosen colors. However, knowing that this is a canary trap used by the SSS, SSS agents report the situation to headquarters, and it is revealed that the spy named Jeffrey is a WISE mole.
They soon realize that "Winston" is also a spy. While Yuri and other agents make a move to capture him, Loid escapes using the traps he set. Yuri follows him into the sewers, but is overpowered by Loid two times. While Loid was about to make a move to kill Yuri, he heard Yuri unconsciously apologizing to Yor, he spares him and quickly runs away.
The Mole Hunt ends with Winston being captured by WISE. After the events, he goes to Yor and Loid's house, Loid goes to make some tea for Yuri, at that time Yuri notices that Loid's right arm is hurt. Then, remembering that he shot Twilight in his right arm, he becomes suspicious of Loid and opens his arm with a quick move, but finds nothing. When Yor asks him what he is doing, he makes an excuse about Loid's safety, and Yor hurries him away.
