“ | If magic is the bloodstream of the universe, the Wyrm feeds on it. Imprisoned a long time ago beneath the surface of world, it waits, sleeping. | „ |
~ Willow Ufgood describing the Wyrm. |
The Wyrm is the overarching antagonist of the Willow franchise, serving as the overarching antagonist of the 1988 fantasy adventure Willow and the Disney+ sequel television series of the same name.
It's an eldritch and malign deity whose shadow covers the evilness of the magic land of Andowyne and is worshipped by the Order of the Wyrm, who aspire to accomplish its goals of taking over all of Andowyne with its eternal darkness through finding a Harbinger for it as a vessel. Among the Wyrm's acolytes were The Crone and Queen Bavmorda, being their servitudes to their master what kicked off the franchise's events.
While posing as Elora Danan, it was portrayed by Ellie Bamber.
Biography[]
Past[]
The Wyrm presumably came into existence upon the birth of the universe. Since its creation, it has fed on the universe's magic. Eventually, the Wyrm was somehow imprisoned beneath the surface of Andowyne, forcing into a deep slumber, but its influence could still be felt by several. By the modern day, the Wyrm would be revered and worshipped by a tabboo cult known as the Order of the Wyrm, which wished to free it from its imprisonment.
Among the Wyrm's acolytes were two sorceresess: a Princess of Cashmere named Lilli, who became known as The Crone, and a promissing sorceress of Tir Asleen named Bavmorda. Both were abducted and indoctrinated into the ways of the Wyrm and became exceptionally powerful yet vile sorceresses who grew paranoid at being stopped by a prophecy claiming that they would be defeated by a little girl called Elora Danan, leading into the events of the original Willow film.
Willow (2022)[]
Two hundred moons after the events of the first film and Bavmorda's death, the Crone decides to find a new disciple for the Wyrm that can serve as a vessel for her master as the Harbinger of the Wyrm. Thus, the Crone dispatches The Gales, her monstrous servants, to kidnap Bavmorda's grandson Prince Airk Tanthalos due to having the potential to serve as the Harbinger of the Wyrm. The Gales do so during the royal party held for the engagement of Airk's sister Princess Kit Tanthalos and Prince Graydon Hastur of Galladorn. Despite the best efforts of Kit, her mother Queen Sorsha and their forces, the Gales abduct Airk and take him to the Crone, who has Airk taken to the Immemorial City to prepare him for his indoctrination to the Wyrm's ways while Sorsha assembles a rescue mission led by Kit to save Airk.
During their trek to look for Willow Ufgood to save Airk, Kit and her allies come across a wall writing claiming that the Wyrm will return and that they will witness it. After Willow reveals that the kitchenmaid Dove, Airk's lover, is actually Elora Danan, and starts training her while they look for Immemorial City, he tells her and everyone about the Wyrm and the threat it poses. Meanwhile, the Crone seduces Airk into drinking the Wyrm's milk, which in turn brainwashes Airk into joining the Wyrm's cause.
By the end of the season, once the Crone is killed and Airk is rescued though seemingly at the cost of Graydon's life, it's revealed that Graydon was knocked into a portal that leads into the Wyrm's realm. Once there, Graydon comes across the Wyrm, who is taking Elora's form to seduce him to its side, fully knowing that Graydon has an unrequited crush on her, while displaying its vast armies of evil creatures behind it, evidently planning to take matters in its own hands now that its apprentices failed it. It's unknown if the Wyrms ever succeeds at escaping from its realm or if it stays there, also being similarly unknown whether Graydon joins forces with it or finds a way out of its realm.
Trivia[]
- In an interview with FANDOM following the last Willow episode, Jon Kasdan described the Wyrm as being based on lots of mythological and primal ideas about religion, deities, the universe and any unordinary forces, who has dangerous plans for human life.
- The Harbinger of the Wyrm's purpose of waking it up from its deathless slumber seems to suggest an inspiration on Azathoth of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulthu Mythos, who is similarly an eldritch abomination who is currently sleeping as it waits to become a threat.
- Kasdan originally planned to flesh out the Wyrm's origins and goals if Willow had been renewed for a second season, but the show was unfortunately cancelled in March 2023 and removed two months later due to an industry-wide change of view in streaming content, so unless Disney+ ever revives the show like Kasdan has suggested it can, we will likely never learn about what the Wyrm's plans really are or if it is gonna be ever defeated.
- The show's Latin Spanish dub wrongly translated its name as "Maggot" in the first Willow episode.
