Seven. Seven human souls, and King ASGORE will become a god. Six. That's how many we have collected thus far. Understand? Through your seventh and final soul, this world will be transformed. First, however, as is customary for those who make it this far... I shall tell you the tragic tale of our people. It all started, long ago...
... No, you know what? SCREW IT! WHY SHOULD I TELL THAT STORY WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE!?! NGAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
~ The beginning of Undyne's speech towards Frisk. The rest of the dialogue changes depending on the player's choices.

Undyne is a major character in the 2015 indie video game Undertale, and a minor character in its 2018 spinoff, Deltarune.

Although she is a mostly heroic character who was even willing to sacrifice herself to save Monster Kid's life in the Genocide route, Undyne harbors a violent hatred for all of humanity to the point of being genocidal towards them until Frisk optionally befriends her, and even actually conspires to launch an attack on humanity if she ends up ruling the underground.

Appearance[]

Undyne is a fish-like humanoid monster, having royal blue scales and a long bright red ponytail. She always shows a pair of protruding teeth along with fins on the side of her head. Undyne also wears an eyepatch over her left eye, meaning that she lost it or just uses it for her own taste. However, she also has yellow sclera, but it turns black when she is fatally wounded.

She is shown in her first appearance wearing a tough armor with boots, gloves and a helmet. Later at her house, Undyne wears her usual clothing: a black tank top, blue pants and dull red boots with one yellow stripe at each edge.

In her Undying form, Undyne's pupils turn white, and her sclera turns black. She no longer has an eyepatch, and her newly revealed empty eye socket emits a flashing light in the shape of a spear. Her hair spikes at the ends and her fins become more rigid and pointy. She also appears to have donned a new set of darker colored armor with souls/hearts on her chestplate and on her new white gloves, accompanied by boots with pointed toes.

Personality[]

While Undyne takes her goals seriously when she is focused on killing the protagonist and getting the last soul so Asgore can break the barrier, she can also be friendly, honorable and honest to everyone she meets, especially Papyrus, Alphys and the Royal Guard, all of whom she regards as her friends. She is selfless, as shown by her protection of Monster Kid, either jumping off a bridge to save them on a Neutral/True Pacifist Route or shielding them from a murderous Frisk's attack on a Genocide Route.

Undyne harbors a deep hatred for humanity, which grows even deeper if she's alive in any of the neutral routes and she regards Frisk as her archenemy in all routes before they befriend her in the True Pacifist route. Even though she despises Frisk, she still shows honor during their battle, giving them a spear to block her bullets within order to make it a fair fight. In the True Pacifist route Undyne gives up her ideology that all humans are evil and deserve to die, as she was met with proof in Frisk that this isn't the case.

Undyne is encouraging and competitive as shown when Papyrus said she's "not up to the challenge" at having Frisk as her friend and realized that having them as her friend would be her "ultimate revenge". Despite that, Undyne always keeps her kind attitude and cares for those who she considers her friends. Undyne also deeply sympathized with Asgore regarding his heartbreak from Toriel's harsh rejection and looks up to him not just as a king, but as her friend and mentor. Undyne is capable of feeling pity as well, as she chose not to enroll Papyrus into the Royal Guard, not because he's weak, but because he's too innocent and good-natured, believing that he doesn't have what it takes to kill his enemies and is liable to be killed himself because of it. This is also why she chose to teach Papyrus how to cook, so he could have something else to work on and dedicate his time to.

Undyne is also secretly in love with Alphys, the royal scientist of the underground who also shares the same feelings towards her. As such, Alphys is one of, if not the only monster, who can throw Undyne off her usual upbeat and fierce attitude. Whenever the royal scientist is brought into the mix, she becomes notably flustered. For example, when calling Undyne at Alphys' laboratory, she will ask Frisk to say hi for her, to ask her how she's doing, and whether or not she needs anything, before hastily telling them not to ask any of that. Similarly, if Frisk calls Undyne from Alphys' bedroom, she'll become enraged and tell them to get out of there.

She appears to have a rather inaccurate and romanticized view of humanity's culture and history, due to believing that they are based off anime through watching it together with Alphys. As such, despite Undyne's hatred for humankind, she believes that human history is awesome and admires it fondly. The player can optionally break it to Undyne that anime isn't real, should they do this, Undyne will be devastated but will quickly get over it for Alphys' sake.

Biography[]

As a child, Undyne idolized Gerson, a war veteran and former hero. She watched him beat up bad guys, sometimes trying to help although she'd usually end up attacking innocents, like the mailman. Eventually, Undyne challenged Asgore to a fight but couldn't land a single blow on him and was humiliated as he didn't even fight back. Asgore then offered to train her, and she was eventually promoted to the captain of the Royal Guard.

On one certain night, Undyne was woken up by a skeleton named Papyrus, who requested to be put in the Royal Guard. Irritated, Undyne initially ignored him and went back to sleep. To her surprise, he was still waiting outside her house when she woke up in the morning, convincing her of his dedication. Although he proved he was a strong and capable fighter, Undyne noticed Papyrus' innocent and passive behavior. Afraid that he would get killed if she did put him in the Royal Guard but not wanting to hurt his feelings, she instead gives him cooking lessons out of hope that it would distract him and the two form a close bond.

After Asgore declares war on humanity, the Royal Guard and eventually Undyne are given the task of patrolling for humans and killing them on sight. Undyne seemingly takes this task much more seriously than any of the other Royal Guard members do. In every route, Undyne ends up ruthlessly hunting down Frisk once they enter Waterfall, and eventually battles them.

True Pacifist Route[]

Undyne tries and fails to kill Frisk and is saved from heatstroke in Hotland by them pouring water on her. After this, Undyne retreats back to her house, humiliated. Later, Frisk goes to Undyne's house and Papyrus provokes her into becoming their friend. Undyne then vows to become Frisk's bestie for the purpose of getting "revenge" on them, and after hanging out with them and finding them similar to Asgore, ends up genuinely becoming their friend.

In the Flawed Pacifist ending, the Royal Guard is disbanded and Undyne becomes Alphys' lab assistant and the gym teacher of Toriel's new school. Undyne mourns the loss of Asgore, but tells Frisk that his death wasn't their fault, and they were just doing what they needed to get home and tells them to live their life on the surface to the fullest in order to make the monsters' sacrifice worthwhile.

After Frisk loads their save and Papyrus gathers everyone together at the barrier, Flowey ensnares Undyne and the others, they protect Frisk and Flowey absorbs everyone's souls to transform back into his form as Asriel. Undyne then becomes a Lost Soul but is saved by Frisk. After Asriel is defeated and the barrier is broken, Undyne and the others go to the surface and live happily ever after.

Genocide Route[]

Undyne body-shields Monster Kid from Frisk's attack and ends up having all of her HP drained in one hit. After a heroic speech, Undyne restores all of her HP and transforms into Undyne the Undying, putting up a great fight against Frisk before eventually being killed. Even then, Undyne doesn't give up on Frisk's defeat, telling Frisk that she told Alphys to evacuate everyone.

Neutral Endings[]

Undyne Ending[]

Undyne becomes queen of the Underground, massively expands the Royal Guard and instates a policy that any human who falls would be destroyed. She plans to find a new way to break the barrier and, once the monsters are freed, she plans to wage war on humanity and personally hunt down and kill Frisk.

Betrayed Undyne Endings[]

If Frisk spared Mettaton and didn't befriend Undyne, she blames them for Asgore's death and according to Papyrus makes a plan to cross the barrier and "beat them up", although she likely intends to kill them.

If Frisk killed Mettaton, Undyne is devastated that Asgore was killed and Alphys went missing, implied to have committed suicide. Despite this, she doesn't decide to get revenge on Frisk in this ending upon Papyrus’s suggestion in hopes to reinvigorate her, as she simply says "revenge won't bring anybody back". Undyne falls into a deep depression and Papyrus comments that it’s hard to get her to do anything. He also pleads with Frisk to bring back her friends if they can, saying that Undyne isn’t doing well at all.

If Frisk befriended Undyne but killed somebody afterwards, she hates herself for ever trusting Frisk and says she knew what humans were like but failed to resist becoming friends. Papyrus warns Frisk to never come back to the Underground as Undyne would destroy them and even the queen can't stop her.

Exiled Queen Ending[]

If Undyne is alive, she spearheads a revolution against Toriel after she becomes queen of the Underground and makes a policy to treat humans as friends, and forcibly takes over to become the empress of the Underground. Sans comments that she seems to be more vehement about destroying humanity than Asgore ever was.

Mettaton Ending[]

According to Papyrus, under Mettaton's rule, those who don't worship him tend to disappear; Undyne being one of those who disappeared. However, Undyne has to be killed by Frisk for Mettaton to rule, so she's not one of his victims.

Trivia[]

  • Due to being a fish monster, Undyne's major weakness is heat, as she will collapse after chasing the player to Hotland due to her body temperature because of her armor. For these reasons, she stays at the Inn whenever visiting Snowdin, and Alphys installed a water cooler for her to use on the way to her laboratory.
  • If the player does a playthrough where they are a pacifist and spare both her and Papyrus and then betray her by continuing with a genocide playthrough, Toriel will disband the royal guard and Undyne will become a depressed shut-in. This is the only ending that ruins her normally highly energetic personality.
