~ Tom to Greg Hirsch.
I think, you know.... I think a lot of the time, if I think about it a lot of time, I'm really pretty unhappy.... I dunno. I love you, I do, I just... I wonder if the sad I'd be.... without you would be less than the sad I get from being with you.
~ Tom to Shiv in regards to his feelings about their relationship.

Thomas "Tom" Wambsgans is the tritagonist of the HBO black comedy-drama series Succession.

He is the head of ATN News at Waystar-Royco, and the husband of Siobhan Roy. Having grown up without excessive wealth, he remains outsider in the Roy family despite his marriage to Shiv, and desires to advance his own status. He also becomes a mentor and attracted to Greg Hirsch, due to them both being separate from the main dynamic.

He was portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, who also played Charles Ingram in Quiz and Mr. Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Personality[]

Tom is a gregarious, crude, and somewhat obnoxious man, who has grown up outside of the excessive wealth and privilege and desires to continue advancing his own career. In the beginning, he is subservient to both Logan Roy and his wife, Shiv, being terrified of the former and loving the latter.

Tom, like many other characters in the series, is a selfish man, ultimately not caring about any crimes committed by Waystar Royco unless they can effect him negatively. He was willing to have Greg Hirsch risk getting arrested by having the younger man destroy incriminating document about abuse practices on Brightstar Cruises, and was later willing to testify before Congress and dismiss knowledge of the documents being destroyed. He is also a sycophant, and wants to stay on the good side of his father-in-law, Logan, in order to climb the ranks.

Despite his subservience, he is neither a complete doormat nor is he stupid. His loyalty to Logan Roy is out of self-interest, and it ultimately paid off, as he was promoted from Head of Parks and Cruises, to then become Chairman of ATN. Later. After Logan's death, he was willing to bow to Lukas Matsson in order to become CEO of Waystar Royco after the company was sold to GoJo.

Tom genuinely cared about his wife, always attempting to please her and never being truly unfaithful to her despite Shiv's own infidelity. However, he learns on their wedding night that Shiv will never truly love him the way he loves her, and that she desires to continue sleeping with other men. Furthermore, Shiv continues to attempt to advance herself without taking him into account, and Tom becomes fearful that the Roys will leave him in the dust no matter who becomes CEO. Ultimately, Tom betrayed his wife when she, Roman, and Kendall tried to interfere with the GoJo sale, warning Logan and thus stamping out their efforts.

Trivia[]

  • While a now debunked theory, some fans speculated that the oddness of Tom's surname was secretly a hidden reference to real life Bill Wambsganss, a Major League Baseball player who completed the only unassisted triple-play in World Series history back in 1920, symbolic to Tom's victory over the three major Roy Siblings.
  • Due to the nature of Tom's character being that of an outsider who marries into a powerful family that constantly mock and shun him, fans of the show as well as one of it's writers Georgia Pritchett have jokingly thought of him as and compared him to Princess Diana.
    • Coincidentally enough, both Matthew Macfadyen and Elizabeth Debicki were awarded Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series at the 2023 Golden Globes for their performances as Tom Wambsgans and Princess Diana respectively.
