“ | When you first came here, I thought maybe you were a leader. But now I see that you have other priorities. Real leaders separate, they cleave themselves off from everyone else because the things that real leaders do... most people just don't have the stomach for it. But the ones that do? They're the real threats. | „ |
~ The Warden sizing up Negan Smith. |
The Warden is a supporting antagonist in the 11th and final season of The Walking Dead, serving as the main antagonist of the episode Faith.
He is the cruel, authoritarian warden of a prison facility where the Commonwealth, a community of survivors of a zombie apocalypse, sends people to work as slaves.
He was portrayed by Michael Weaver.
Biography[]
The Warden runs a prison facility where the Commonwealth community, led Pamela Milton, sends people it deems dangerous to work as slave labor. He runs the prison with an iron fist, torturing and even executing prisoners for disobeying the smallest orders. He also takes sadistic pleasure in having prisoners beaten within an inch of their lives, and sometimes inflicts the beatings personally. He is so feared by the prisoners that one of them, Wilson, commits suicide after getting caught trying to escape, knowing that the Warden will murder his wife and children to get him to talk.
The Walking Dead[]
When the Warden meets new prisoner Negan Smith, he is impressed by the man's fearlessness and leadership qualities. When Negan begins talking back to the guards and starting fights, however, the Warden resolves to break him. He has Negan repeatedly and brutally beaten by the guards, but Negan remains defiant.
When a few prisoners try to make a run for it, the Warden coldly orders his men to gun them down in full view of the other prisoners, as a warning.
The Warden eventually learns that some of the prisoners are planning to escape, and orders Negan to find out who it is, threatening to hurt his wife Annie if he refuses. Negan refuses to submit, however, and calmly admits that he is leading the breakout. The Warden sentences him to be executed by firing squad. That night, as the firing squad prepares to execute Negan, the Warden suddenly decides to deny him the satisfaction of martyrdom, and orders Annie and fellow prisoner Ezekiel Sutton to be executed, as well.
Ultimately, however, Negan and Ezekiel manage to convince the guards not to let the Warden turn them into murderers, and they turn on their hated boss. Panicked, the Warden takes one of the prisoners, Kelly, hostage, but another, Daryl Dixon, stabs him in the back, saving Kelly's life. As he writhes in pain on the ground, prisoner Rosita Espinosa demands to know where he has taken her infant daughter, holding a ravenous zombie over his face to get him to talk. In a final act of cruelty, however, the Warden refuses to tell her, and laughs at her. Enraged, Rosita lets the zombie devour him as he screams in agony.
