Now a new age has come, and the world can be reborn, as it was meant to be - with me as ruler of the ashes. You and your petty conquests. I am Tartarus, the darkness of the true underworld, and my night is much greater than yours.
~ Tartarus' boasting of his plans to remake the world.

Gottfried better known as Tartarus is the leader of a street gang known as "The Sons of Chaos". Tartarus is the main antagonist of the first four issues of the Moriarty comic series by Image Comics.

History[]

Gottfried was man known to lend out money in an attempt to advance in politics before he started his own gang known as "The Sons of Chaos" in hopes of amassing more power for himself by preying on others discontent with the way the world was and fear of an apocalyptic event happening. As his grew so did their influence as they started to preach of how the end of the world was approaching very soon. In hopes of conquering Europe, Gottfried took the alias "Tartarus" to hide his identity and connection from all but the highest members of a cult known as "The Black Hand" and commissioned a device he called "The Dark Chamber" based off designs from ancient Greece. This device was meant to project illusions so powerful it could give glimpse of the future but instead drove nearly everyone insane with what appeared to be visions of the world ending while a previous design would show images of the past. To ensure the Dark Chamber was indeed ready he had Rupert Thomason kidnapped and forced to work on it as he was the only one able to make it to his specifications. Deciding to frame James Moriarty for the murder of a government agent and Lord Hollingsworth once the device was complete so he wouldn't need to share this power.

With his connection he convinced the Black Hand to kill the archduke with the promise of having Russia join the in their cause and to leave them a copy of the Dark Chamber in an attempt to stop the end of the world only to instead betray them. Tartarus is revealed to have planned to use the world war to expand his power, with the Dark Chamber he's going to drive a majority of humanity irreversibly and homicidally insane by bringing their dark and fearful side to the surface so causing untold chaos and death so they'd be weak enough he could subjugate the few survivors. To measure the effects accurately and seeing Rupert Thomason as no longer useful he exposed him repeatedly until the professor was broken and near death. Using the Dark Chamber he experiments on countless individuals he could on the street to brainwash them into becoming his devoted follower while constructing the device into an airship capable of driving entire an entire city insane at once in his underwater hideout. When Moriarty does infiltrate his hideout, Tartarus decides to elaborate on his goals and explain how he sees Moriarty as an inferior individual but in the middle of this Dr. Watson and some soldiers have come to confront Tartarus forcing him to briefly flee to his airship. Declaring he will first drive the city insane and then kill Moriarty, Taraus gloats that he will soon be the ruler of a new world made in his image. However Moriarty is able to climb the chain of the airship and destroying the chain attaching the Dark Chamber causing it to fall to the ground, exploding in the process. Tartarus seeing his plans for world domination destroyed, duels Moriarty. After a brief struggle Tartarus is disarmed and loses an eye. Knowing he won't be able to survive, he tries to attack Moriarty before being kicked off the airship. Clinging to life Tartarus reaches for a detonator that causes the airship to explode ending his life but the effort being in vain as Moriarty manages to escape unscathed.

Appearance[]

Tartarus is shown to wear a blue military outfit, a military sword, some dark cloak with a white demonic mask with no mouth and a red jaw design.

Personality[]

Tartarus is an egomaniac who wants to tear apart all government by killing the vast majority of Europe so he can amass as much power over the survivors as possible so that he would be worshipped by them as a godlike figure. To this end he even betrayed the Black Hant once they perfected the "Dark Chamber", not desiring to share in any power he subjects them to the doomsday device driving to insanity. To some extent Tartarus didn't just want to be worshipped as a God but believed it true when confronted by Moriarty, believing he couldn't lose. Even when bested Tartarus decided if he had to die he'd take Moriarty out with him out of spite. A soft-spoken sadist, Tartarus is shown to be both manipulative and charismatic enough to play all sides to his favor before ultimately revealing his true colors.

Powers and Abilities[]

Tartarus is shown to be a skilled strategist and manipulator, able to convince the Black Hand into killing the Archduke Fredinand to set the grounds for a war with promises of power. He also was able to convince several groups into believing he would share his power and bring about a new world order with seemingly little effort. It is hinted he is a skilled swordsman in his own right with it being his preferred weapon though how skilled is left to debate as he didn't last very long against a skilled swordsman like Moriarty, quickly being overpowered and losing an eye.
