Soraya Montenegro is the main antagonist of María La Del Barrio. She was the love arch-rival of the titular main protagonist María La Del Barrio.
She was portrayed by Itatí Cantoral.
Personality[]
Soraya Montenegro was arrogant, jealous and wrathful. She will do anything to win Luis Fernando's love from María La Del Barrio. She would always lose her temper and get in cat fights with María and others.
As a stepparent, she was abusive towards Alicia and torturing her by having a scorpion on her food. When discovering Alicia and Nandito, whom Soraya fall in love with, were together, Soraya becomes enraged and lose her temper by abusing Alicia and stabbing Nandito almost to death.
Biography[]
Soraya Montenegro is the niece of Don Montenegro de la Vega and Victoria Montenegro de la Vega. She was infatuated with Luis Fernando de la Vega. After Don Montenegro introduces María Hernandéz, a poor orphan, to Luis Fernando and Soraya Montenegro, who became extremely jealous of her because of Luis Fernando.
She marries Luis Fernando and feigned a pregnancy, causing the latter break up with her and falling in love with María Hernandéz, causing Soraya tried to have her nanny (and her mother), Calixta, poison María, but was unsuccessful. While Soraya was abusing Calixta on her bedroom, Calixta reveals to her that she's her mother causing the former kick her out of the house. After María has becomes educated and wealthy, Soraya Montenegro continues to be jealous towards her. She tries to murder her lover, Osvaldo, for blackmailing her about her plan against María, but Soraya falls off the window of a building, presumed to be dead. María and Luis Fernando were married and had a child nicknamed Nandito, whom María send to Agripina due to María suffering from mental illness and memory loss.
Fifteen years later, María and Luis Fernando were living together happily with their adoptive daughter. It reveals that Soraya Montenegro was actually not dead and is recovering from a hospital in Texas. She is marrying a doctor, whom she later kills to inherit his money by arranging a car accident. She was very abusive towards Alicia, her step-daughter. Nandito, on the other hand, grow up to be selling lottery tickets to support his adoptive mother and he came to the house of María and Luis Fernando to steal money because of his adoptive mother's health issues, but is caught by María and Luis Fernando, who is unaware that Nandito is his son after María told him that Nandito is dead. Nandito was released thanks to María's help.
Soraya Montenegro went on to get revenge on María, but she infatuated with Nandito and seduced him despite their age differences. Nandito broke up with her after she cheated on him with her new boyfriend and in love with Alicia during the party, causing Soraya, enraged, to abuse Alicia and stabbing Nandito nearly to death, causing him to rush to the hospital. Soraya later kills her mother and frames Nandito for the murder, however María taking the blame for the murder and is sent to a jail with Penelope, whom María has conflicted with. During the fire at prison, María saved Penelope and went on to work as a nanny due to suffering memory loss.
Soraya kidnaps María and takes her to a cabin where she fights her. Luis Fernando arrives to save María causing Soraya to set the cabin on the fire. Soraya Montenegro writhes in agony as her skin begins to become charred and black as coal and disintegrate into black ashes, though she still finds the strength to make one last reach for her house's door before her body is disintegrated completely. However, María is saved by Luis Fernando and even tries unsuccessfully to saved Soraya from being disintegrated into ashes. In the end, María and Luis Fernando, together with Nandito and Alicia, live happy in the end.

- Itatí Cantoral and Thalía, who played Soraya Montenegro and María La Del Barrio, are actually friends in real life and the former did join the latter's challenge.
- Thalía is also the godmother of Itatí's children.
- Soraya Montenegro is supposed to be dead after falling off, but is brought back so Thalía can test her role as the heroine of the telenovela.
- Soraya made a cameo in an Orange Is the New Black commercial made by Netflix, where she is shown to be imprisoned at the Litchfield prison and recreates her "Damn Cripple" scene and her crying meme at the request of the other prisoners despite psychologically and physically assaulting them at first. It's unknown whether the commercial is canon to either Orange Is the New Black or to María La Del Barrio, considering that Soraya died at the end of the latter show. Though it was likely made for publicity purposes, one can speculate that if the commercial is canon, the Orange Is the New Black version of Soraya may have experienced the same events of María La Del Barrio but survived and was arrested rather than dying in the fire in that show's series finale.
