Sir Guy of Gisbourne is the secondary antagonist in the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
He was portrayed by the late Basil Rathbone, who also portrayed King Richard III in the 1939 film adaptation of The Tower of London, Edward Murdstone in David Copperfield, and Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii.
Biography[]
Sir Guy is the lord of Nottingham Castle, a charismatic but ruthless Norman nobleman who is loyal to Prince John. He pines for the Lady Marian and detests the heroic Saxon Robin Hood. Along with the High Sheriff of Nottingham, Guy taxes and oppresses the Saxons of Nottingham to fill Prince John's coffers.
He schemes to get John on the throne. At the end of the film, he and Robin have a lengthy swordfight, getting defeated twice, exchanging small banter, and trying to Stan Robin with a dagger. Eventually Robin wins, stabbing Guy through the stomach. He falls off a ledge to his death.
