Roy Laferty is a minor antagonist in the 2011 novel The Devil All the Time and its 2020 film adaptation. He is an eccentric priest who would kill his wife after falling into madness, and is later killed by Carl and Sandy Henderson after his sermons failed to resurrect his beloved.

He was portrayed by Harry Melling, who also played Dudley Durlsey in the Harry Potter films and Steven Merrick in The Old Guard.

Biography[]

Roy Laferty is introduced as the delightfully eccentric preacher of the local church, preaching about fear and dumping a jar of spiders onto his face. Helen Hatton finds herself in love with him and the two get married shortly after, having a daughter they named Lenora.

Years later, Roy is bitten by a spider during one of his sermons, going insane. He later takes his wife out for a ride. Roy stabs Helen in the neck, killing her. Roy then attempts to call for God to resurrect her, but this obviously fails.

Roy prepares to go back home, get Lenora and presumably run away. He is picked up by Carl and Sandy Henderson. Carl later attempts to force Roy to have sex with Sandy, and kills him when he refuses. Preston Teagardin succeeds him as preacher.

Roy and the rest of Carl and Sandy's victims are avenged by Arvin Russell when he kills the couple in 1965.
