Richard Hagstrom is the villainous main protagonist of the short Stephen King story Word Processor of the Gods, as well as the 1984 Tales from the Darkside episode of the same name.
In the television adaptation of the story, he was portrayed by Bruce Davison, who also played Dr. Reingold in Paulie and Dracula in The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice alongside voicing Zuko in The Legend of Korra.
Biography[]
Richard Hagstrom is a struggling author who lives with his abrasive wife Lina and his annoying son Seth. His beloved sister-in-law Belinda and nephew Jonathan were both killed when Richard's abusive brother Roger drove their car off a cliff. Before he died, Jonathan built his uncle a word processor to give to him for his birthday, which Richard receives after Jonathan's death.
Richard tests out the word processor by typing in "My brother was a worthless drunk. My brother married Belinda, the woman I loved". He then types "My wife's portrait is on the bookcase in my study" and hits delete. With a shock, he realises that the picture has vanished. He tests it out some more, coming to the conclusion that whatever he types will come true.
Richard types "I have ideas for 20 best selling novels" into the word processor, but his power is cut out by Seth accidentally overloading it with his electric guitar. Annoyed, Richard turns the power back on and types "My son is Seth Robert Hagstrom" and hits delete. Immediately, Seth's guitar stops playing and he disappears from the family picture. Richard asks Lina if she is glad they never had children and she says yes, confirming that she doesn't remember Seth.
Richard types in "My wife is Adelina Mabel Warren Hagstrom" and hits delete. Lina disappears from the family picture. He then types in "I am a man who lives alone except for my beloved wife Belinda and my wonderful son Jonathan" and hits execute. This overloads the word processor, which explodes. Richard is then sitting in the room, with Jonathan apologising for using faulty parts on the word processor.
