~ Rex Crater revealing his true identity |
Rex Crater is the main antagonist of the 2002 Sci-fi comedy film The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
He was portrayed by Eddie Murphy who also played Rasputia Latimore in Norbit, Maximillian in Vampire in Brooklyn, Mr. Robinson in Saturday Night Live, and Buddy Love in The Nutty Professor films.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Mobster Mike Marucci wanted someone to be his public face for his illegal activities and had Dr. Runa Pedankin take the DNA harvested from Pluto Nash's appendix back when Pluto was imprisoned. Rex rebelled and launched Mike and Runa into orbit while swaying Mike's personal assistant Belcher to his side. Rex Crater established his headquarters at his hotel and casino at Moon Beach. Only one elevator goes to his penthouse and Belcher forwards his orders to his underlings.
Events of the film[]
Rex Crater dispatched his underlings Mogan and Kelp to Little America to buy Pluto Nash's nightclub on his behalf. As Pluto does not want his nightclub to be converted into a casino, he turns them down. Rex Crater and Belcher did not take the news of it lightly and sent someone to bomb the nightclub. This puts Rex on the run with his android bodyguard Bruno and aspiring singer Dina Lake. Because Rex Crater had Pluto's memories, he had Belcher attack them at Pluto's safehouse.
Arriving at Rex Crater's hotel and casino, Pluto Nash attempted to sneak into his office to confront him. He goes to visit his old friend Tony Francis for help.
Using a device to disable an elevator, Tony shows Pluto the elevator shaft leading to Rex Crater's penthouse and that he would have to maneuver in between the shafts to get to the elevator ropes in question. Pluto does ask if Tony has a Plan B. Exiting the elevator, Pluto Nash was confronted by Belcher and those with him as Belcher quotes "How's this as Plan B"? After being tased into unconsciousness by Belcher whose men knock out Tony, Pluto was taken to Rex Crater's office. At the same time, Mogan and Kemp lead some minions to apprehend Dina and Bruno.
Upon being tased back into consciousness, Pluto was surprised when the chair turned around and Rex Crater is revealed to be a clone of Pluto Nash. Belcher explains Rex's backstory.
He then shows his plan to Pluto Nash that he'll take over his nightclub and make it his own casino. Pluto protests that Little America is not a gambling town as is Lunar Beach. Rex says he is not interested in Little America; he is going to make all the colonies on the Moon gambling places out of vengeance for all the governments of Earth outlawing gambling in the 21st Century. When Mogan, Kemp, and those with them bring Dina and Bruno into Rex's penthouse, Mogan and Kemp see both Pluto and Rex together which caused some confusion at first. Rex then kills Mogan and Kemp for their incompetence and has their bodies disposed.
Pluto breaks the model of his club, causing Rex to attack him. Rex's goons storm the office to defend him, holding Pluto's sidekick Bruno as hostage. In the scuffle, the goons cannot figure out whom is who. Pluto shoots Bruno. Assuming that Pluto would not damage his own robot, Belcher shoots Rex. Pluto orders his men to leave and reveals his identity to Dina by speaking of her employment to him, then knocks out Belcher who has realized his mistake in shooting the wrong person. Bruno is shown to have survived unharmed since he was wearing a bulletproof shirt, but Rex is revealed to have worn one also. Rex attempts to garotte Pluto, but is thrown through a window and dies upon hitting the card table below.
With Rex Crater dead, Pluto, Dina, and Bruno return to Little America and open up a new nightclub.
Trivia[]
- Rex Crater is most likely a reference to Rex Kramer from Airplane!, despite a lack of similarities other than their names. However, Airplane II: The Sequel took place on the Moon.
