In the movie, they are voiced by sound designer Randy Thom.
Appearance[]
The RECOs have a similar appearance to Roz, except much larger and bulkier. They have a rim in the middle of their heads.
In the film adaptation, they have a more hunched appearance and have a head containing multiple cameras, with laser cannons mounted on both of their arms. A special unit named Vontra leads them. They all have a unit number on their bodies.
Biography[]
The Wild Robot[]
During a large hurricane, a cargo ship containing hundreds of ROZZUM robots had sunk. Five units had been washed ashore on a remote island with one unit nicknamed "Roz" being the only survivor.
The RECOs are first seen flying an airship down to the remote island where Roz is located. After landing they begin searching for Roz and or other missing robots. When the they locate and find Roz they instruct her to come with them without elaborating. Roz refuses to come with them and the RECOs target her as defective and prepare to restrain her. Just then the animals Roz had befriended during her time on the island attack them and Roz escapes.
When Roz had ran away they head back inside the airship and grab rifles to hunt her down with. They then split up and start a manhunt. RECO 2 and RECO 3 end up getting destroyed in the conflict with Roz and the animals. RECO 1 relentlessly pursues Roz until they get to the coastline, Roz hid from him and came out when he got close enough and tried to take his rifle. RECO 1 fired the rifle which destroyed all of Roz's limbs and gave him the chance to turn her off. RECO 1 continued his mission and collected all of the other dead ROZZUM units.
Roz's adopted goose son, Brightbill, turned Roz back on and tried to save her, RECO 1 then grabbed the goose and prepared to crush it to death. The other animals managed to steal RECO 3's rifle and shot RECO 1 before he could kill the goose. Before he dies, he tells Roz to leave the island or more units will come. Roz had no choice as she had lost all her limbs and had to be repaired.
The Wild Robot Escapes[]
The RECOs are mentioned throughout the story such as when Dr. Molovo tells Roz that people were afraid of her when she tried to flee the city, and that the RECOs gave her nothing to worry about, but Roz had. Some units also appear during Roz's escape in the city.
