Putana is an antagonist in Hindu mythology. A demon who preys on infants and is known for murdering many of them. She is the most powerful demon faced by the young Krishna and was sent by King Kansa to finish of the young God.
Biography[]
Putana was first contacted by Krishna's uncle Kansa who after already trying several demons who had failed him, was willing to deploy a dangerous demoness that had experience with demons. Her mission would be to finish of Krishna once and for all, with her method being planned strategically. Putana came disguised as a beautiful woman that avoided any suspicion in her plan to infiltrate Gokul where Krishna lived. Cowherds in fact mistook her for a reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi allowing her to come right in.
When Putana entered the city and found Yashoda who is Krishna's adopted mother, Putana's falsified beauty caught Yashoda off guard and Krishna was given to her for care. The next stage of the plan was to breastfeed Krishna with the poison mandana and in some versions milk itself that has been poisoned. Krishna to her surprise took not only the milk but her life by squeezing her breasts. Nothing could save her as Krishna ran out of the town still clinging on to her until she dropped dead.
The townspeople later burned her body and this together with breastfeeding Krishna was enough to cleanse her of sin and attain her the same Heavenly status as his foster mother Yashoda.
Personality[]
Putana is very sadistic about her kills feeling great pleasure in wanting to take the life of Krishna. This was with no regrets and the repercussions of one losing their infant child doesn't affect her one bit. While she might look loyal to Kansa, it is more out of the thrill than true friendship and just another chance to kill an infant. It should be noted though that since Hinduism is about reincarnation, her personality could have differed in future and past lives. For example, in a past life, she may have loved infants and hated killing anyone. Furthermore, in some variations, she does feel remorse for trying to murder Krishna and generally is viewed as a sort of mother for breast-feeding him. Although in the first variation, she never truly redeemed or accepted this fact.
