Perfidus, known as Suelburnus in the original French version, is the main antagonist of the 1973 Asterix comic book Asterix in Corsica.

He is the praetor of Aleria and the responsible of the exile of the Corsican solider Boneywasawarriorwayaix for being after Julius Caesar's taxes. He is first seen when Redbeard tells him that that he boarded three passengers on his ship, which was later blown up by the exiled Corsican solider with a Corsican cheese. He is later defeated when he tried to escape using the pirates' ship.

Appearance[]

Perfidus is a fat, white-haired man wearing a blue tunic, a red cape, and white shoes. He is also seen with yellow eyes in certain panels.

Personality[]

Perfidus is a bad-tempered praetor who easily gets mad when someone he exiled manages to escape and when his soldiers doesn't understand the plan he orders them to do, but he is also scared when his own soliders force him to battle with the Gauls, easily getting defeated by them. He is also doubtful when he sends one of his soliders to capture the Corsican solider, as he will have to put his loot in somewhere safe, as he was warned by Caesar that if he doesn't bring back plenty of loot back to Rome, he would be sent to Gaul, where there is a village whose people are much worse than the Corsicans (due to the fact they use the Magic Potion to defend themselves).

Biography[]

Perfidus is first seen when Redbeard comes to tell him that he boarded three passengers on his ship, which was later blown up by a Corsican cheese. He then revealed that one of the passengers was Boneywaswarriorwayaix, which angered Perdifus as he grabs Redbeard, asking him where did they go. His solider, Courtingdisastus, informs him that the three passengers were in Inland, towards the mountains and requests the honour of participating in the search of the three outlaws. Perdifus then tells him that Boneywaswarriorwayaix is the worse of bandits, going after Caesar's taxes, which is the reason he exiled him in the first place, and that they must recapture him. Courtingdisastus then ensures that they will recapture him, as Perfidus appoints him as the leader of the patrol which is going after the bandit. Courtingdisastus then tells him that he may need some men to form the patrol, which Perdifus then order the trumpetist to call in for some soliders to participate in the search, despite them thinking they were gonna be eating, as the praetor orders them to go and recapture Boneywaswarriorwayaix, much to their disappointement as they only had a meal.

As they leave to start searching for him, Perfidus doubts that if he manages to bring him back, as he would have to put the loot somewhere safe. Caesar also warned him that if he didn't bring plenty of loot back to Rome, he would be send to Gaul where he would encounter a village whose people are much worse than the Corsicans, having nothing to loot other than fish, which weren't fresh either.

He is later seen with a legionary, Salamix, telling him that he will be ideal for the secret mission he is about to give him since he is the only one who is Native Corsican, which he agrees to. Perdifus then tells him about the plan, which consists of moving the contents of the warehouses that the Corsicans will attack and get them on board the big galley out in the harbour. For the operation, he orders him to employ the Corsican prisoners who are building the Roman road. However, Salamix doesn't understand the plan, much to Perfidus's disappointement. He then tells him to just do what he says and that he will be rich and respected, coming back to Rome with him.

Later that night, he tells Redbeard that once the ship is loaded up, he will sail it to Rome. He will be on board with Salamix, planning to get rid of him during the trip. He then tells him that all of this must be done that night and that the garrison must not know that he is abandoning them, as they will fight and thus cover his escape, which Redbeard agrees as long as he promises to give him the ship and set him free afterwards. Elsewhere, Salamix orders the prisoners to carry the loot on board the galley. They do so, but they are so slow that the process would take years to carry all of the loot to the galley and they have to stop work at daybreak due to the garrison. The Romans then later realize that their praetor was going to leave them behind and have the warehouse cleaned in secret without them knowing, causing them to get angry at him for leaving them to face the Corsicans, confusing Perfidus, wondering who told them these stories. As Salamix was answering to him almost revealing that it was the captain of the galley they are going to escape with, he orders him to shut up and convinces the garrison that the Corsicans will not attack. However, he was lying to them so he can get away with his plan, as the Corsican are actually about to attack the Romans. As Asterix and Obelix charge towards the garrison, they realize Perfidus was lying and then forces him into the battle, easily getting defeated in the process.

The Corscians then charge towards them, causing a massive fight, which also makes Salamix go against his own garrison, due to him being Native Corsican. Afterwards, a panicked Perfidus then quickly manages to go to the galley as he orders the captain to cast off immediately, but he refuses, as he first needed the loot he has purloined, only to see Asterix and Obelix approaching them and later cause a huge fight on the galley, destroying it in the process. The defeated Perfidus is then brought in front of Boneywaswarriorwayaix, who spares him and tells him that no matter his ambitions, he will never rule the Corsicans, as well as recovering what he has stolen from the warehouses.
