~ Magnus taunting Sunny.

Magnus is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Dante) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the leader of the Black Lotus, a secret coalition which seeks to rid the world of Dark Ones, individuals who possess a supernatural power known as the Gift. Magnus led the invasion against the hidden city of Azra, and because of him, the Black Lotus became disillusioned from its original goal, becoming far more ruthless than it originally was meant to be.

He was portrayed by Francis Magee. His younger self was portrayed by Fergus Mulligan.

Personality[]

One the surface, Magnus appears to be like the other members of the Black Lotus. violent and merciless against Dark Ones, but only because he genuinely believed that they had to be killed in order to keep the world safe. However, his actions prove that this is not the case, because unlike his followers in the Black Lotus, he is shown to be extremely sadistic towards the Dark Ones he kills. He is also severely unreasonable, as he refuses to compromise and work with Sunny in order to take down Pilgrim, even though Pilgrim is a greater threat to them all who could easily take over the entire world. He proves himself to be extremely manipulative, gaining Ankara's trust so that she would reveal the location of the city of Azra, so that he and the other Black Lotus members could find it an launch an invasion.

Even after being temporarily captured, Magnus manipulated the young Sanzō into freeing him, only to immediately hold him hostage so that he could escape, showing a willingness to kill even children who possess the Gift. Magnus' true depravity is shown in how he forced the young Kannin to join the Black Lotus, despite her possessing the Gift. The other members of the Black Lotus show contempt at this decision, but ultimately Magnus has the final say. His entire reason for doing this was because he wanted to sleep with her, despite her being a young girl at the time of her being forced to join. When speaking to Kannin, he claims to be grateful for her loyalty, but he then admits he doesn't actually care about her at all, as he still views her as a "filthy Dark One" and that she will never truly be one of them. Magnus even taunts Sunny over the fact that he had raped his sister, showing that at his core Magnus is nothing more than a sadist.

Biography[]

Destruction of Azra[]

Not much of Magnus' early life is known, but as a young man, he was sent as scout by the Black Lotus to the city of Azra, a safe haven where Dark Ones lived. The leaders of Azra had planned to one day take over the world and have Dark Ones rule, thus making them the primary targets of the Black Lotus. He obtained the location of Azra by working as a scribe at the Abbot Monastery and gaining the trust of Ankara, to the point where she saw him like a son, but once she helped him gain the location of Azra he poisoned her and left her for dead, departing to sneak into Azra. Magnus was caught on his way in, and was taken before Dante, the leader of Azra, who was the father of a boy named Sanzō. His father instructed him to kill Magnus, but Sanzō was unable to go through with it. Magnus told Sanzō of his fathers plan to take the world, prompting Sanzō to free him. Because of this, Magnus was able to escape and tell the Black Lotus of Azra's location. A massive invasion was led by the Black Lotus against Azra, killing everyone except Sanzō and Taurin, who managed to get away, and Kannin, who was taken as a hostage. Magnus then later became the leader of the Black Lotus, likely due to him being instrumental in the destruction of Azra. Sanzō was found by Baron Quinn and renamed to Sunny, whereas Taurin was taken in by Cressida and took the name of Pilgrim. Magnus and the rest of the Black Lotus were unable to track their Gift's due to Kannin having locked Sunny's Gift away inside of him and Taurin not possessing one. Magnus then began torturing Kannin in order to make her subservient to him. He turned her into his weapon, being a Dark One who hunted and killed other Dark Ones, and even forced her to start sleeping with him despite her young age.

Hunting Sunny[]

Decades later, Magnus and the Black Lotus still seek to cleanse the world of Dark Ones, and wipe out any remaining trace of Azra. When he gets word that Sunny is working with the River King, he sends members of the Black Lotus to kill him, although they are unsuccessful. Magnus eventually managed to track down Ankara, a powerful user of the Gift, who was traveling with Sunny and his companion Bajie. Upon finding them, Magnus throws flash grenades into the storage house they are hiding in, which incapacitates Sunny and injures Ankara and Bajie. Ankara attempts to use her Gift against Magnus and the other members of the Black Lotus, but Magnus uses his mastery over pressure point techniques to disable it. Magnus then greets Ankara, commending her on always leading him where he needs to go even after all these years. Ankara calls him heartless, but the two are distracted by Bajie getting up from the rubble of the flash grenade. Magnus asks who Bajie is, to which Bajie claims that he is nobody, but Magnus states that everybody is somebody, and then stabs Bajie in the chest, killing him. Ankara begins crying over the death of her student, prompting Magnus to taunt her for being so sentimental. Ankara states she just wanted to lay her body to rest in Azra, to which Magnus says that she will be there soon enough, and stabs her in the stomach. He then departs, taking Sunny with him as a hostage. After Magnus leaves, Ankara uses her last bit of strength to revive Bajie with her Gift, before succumbing to her wounds. Magnus reveals that he was the one who sent his members to kill Sunny, which prompts Sunny to ask where Bajie is. Magnus tells him that he killed Bajie, and Sunny angrily swears that he will kill him. Sunny tells Magnus that he knows he was the one who sacked Azra and killed his sister Kannin, at which point Kannin appears and reveals to Sunny that she is in fact alive and now serving Magnus.

Kannin and Magnus then explain to Sunny who he really is and his origins as the prince of Azra. Kannin shows Sunny visions of their childhood which have been sealed inside him all this time. Kannin expresses a level of reservation in harming her brother, which causes Magnus to verbally admonish her that while she is a member of the Black Lotus, she is still a Dark One, meaning he sees her as a threat. Magnus tells her that he does want to use Sunny like he did with Kannin but that she is the only one who can accomplish that, and if she wishes for Magnus to not kill her brother than she must be willing to hurt him in order to make him into a weapon. Bajie then arrives and attacks the Black Lotus hideout, catching Magnus off guard and holding a sword to his throat. However, he is stopped by Kannin, who is still fiercely loyal to him. Sunny demands that Bajie let Magnus go, or his sister will be harmed, which Bajie angrily relents to, and is then imprisoned alongside Sunny. Magnus plans to torture Sunny like he did to Kannin in order to make him serve the Black Lotus in killing Dark Ones, but he first needs Kannin to unlock Sunny's Gift. Before he has her do this, he taunts Sunny over his failure to kill him all those years ago in Azra, and informs him that because of his failure, not only did Magnus kill everyone in Azra, but he also took Kannin hostage and forced her to sleep with him. He then tells Sunny that after he is under Magnus' control, he will make him kill Bajie first. When Kannin approaches Sunny to unlock his Gift, Sunny tells her not to forget how this felt, to be chained up and have your will broken, and then made into a sex slave. This finally breaks Magnus hold over Kannin, which prompts her to attack him, although she cannot bring herself to kill him due to being brainwashed to follow him for so long, and instead only knocks him out. She breaks Sunny and Bajie free, and the three escape.

Final confrontation[]

Around the same time as the previous events, Pilgrim has obtained the Gift, and become the most powerful individual to ever wield it. He has decided to complete the original mission of Azra, and desires to take over the world so that Dark Ones may rule. He will accomplish this by activating the Meridian Chamber, the origin of the Gift which enables him to give the Gift to as many of his followers as he wants. Despite how skilled they are, the warriors of the Badlands do not stand a chance against Dark Ones and decide that they must work with the Black Lotus, as they are experts in fighting those with the Gift. Sunny, Bajie, and Gaius Chau go to a Black Lotus outpost and hold a member hostage, telling him to go and get Magnus to meet them there. Magnus arrives, questioning why they would walk straight into what is likely a death trap. Sunny explains how powerful Pilgrim has become, and how their only hope of survival is for the warriors of the Badlands and the Black Lotus to work together. Magnus asks if Sunny is willing to work with the man who destroyed his home, but Sunny states that they can worry about killing each other after Pilgrim is dead. Magnus admit this is a reasonable compromise, but states he does not believe in compromises, and he and his forces attack Sunny, Bajie, and Gaius. He and Sunny appears to be evenly matched, but Kannin gets word of what Sunny is doing, and arrives to help. She begins fighting him alongside Sunny. The two eventually overpower him, with Kannin attacking Magnus from behind and breaking his neck. She breaks down into tears after doing so, as she had followed him for so much of her life. She then informs Sunny that her Gift was stolen by Pilgrim. And after the two of them inform Magnus' followers that he is dead, and that she no longer possesses her Gift, so there is no reason for them to be in conflict. The remaining members of the Black Lotus then agree to fight alongside Sunny and Kannin in order to defeat Pilgrim.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: As a member of the Black Lotus, Magnus was trained to fight Dark Ones, who's Gift makes them far more powerful in combat than any regular human ever could be. Because of this, Magnus was exceptionally skilled at using spiked weaponry and poison in combat, in order to gain the upper hand against enemies that were more powerful than he was. He was even shown capable of keeping pace with Sunny, who is widely regarded as the most skilled non-Gifted warrior in the world.
  • Gift Deactivation: Due to his mastery over pressure point techniques, Magnus could instantly deactivate the Gift if he got close enough to a Dark One.
  • Leadership: Magnus was able to successfully lead an invasion against the city of Azra, and kept the group a secret for decades.
  • Manipulation: Magnus was able to manipulate the entire Black Lotus organization once he became the leader, making them far more sadistic than they originally intended to be.

Trivia[]

  • The scar on the side of Magnus' face was given to him by Sunny as a child when he attempted to take him hostage during the invasion of Azra.
  • A running theme of Into the Badlands is that due to the state of the world, it's impossible to become a leader without being a tyrant, with the two main antagonists, Baron Quinn and Pilgrim, both having sympathetic backstories. Magnus is the only exception to this, as he manipulated a group that sought to improve the world for his own selfish gains.
