Villain Overview

I know a great many things, Arin. I know the truth about this universe.
~ Lord Ras manipulating Arin.
Then how come you aren't any better? I stopped you as easily now as the first time we met. I was weak like you, once. My master found me and taught me the most important thing in this world. Strength. Maybe one day you'll find a true Master who can teach you the same.
~ Lord Ras to Arin.
The cycle of mastery eludes you. You obviously have potential. If Lloyd Garmadon is incapable of unleashing that potential... perhaps you need another master. One who sees you more clearly.
~ Lord Ras Manipulating Arin.

Lord Ras is the main antagonist of Ninjago: Dragons Rising, serving as the secondary antagonist of Season 1 and the main antagonist of Season 2. He will return in Season 3 in some capacity.

He is an anthropomorphic tiger from the realm of the Wyldness and the former commander of the Claws of Imperium who served Empress Beatrix, the former ruler of Imperium. Following his repeated failures of stopping the ninja, Ras was stripped of his title and incarcerated. He later escapes the Imperian Prison and reveals he has been using Beatrix to hunt down Source Dragons. Ras is actually serving a mysterious master who seeks to conquer the merged realms by hunting down the seven Source Dragons.

He is also the arch-nemesis of Sora and Riyu, and the former arch-nemesis of Arin. Ras recruits Jordana and Cinder, the new Elemental Master of Smoke, into his ultimate plans. Ras attempted to free the Forbidden Five from the Nether-Space during the Ritual of the Blood Moon, but only succeeded in releasing Nokt after banishing Kai to the Nether-Space. After he and his allies escape, he promises his master that he would not fail him again.

After the Ritual the Blood Moon, Ras attended the Tournament of the Sources and recruited the amnesiac Jay, deceiving the latter in the process, and Arin's old friend, Frak beforehand to teach them how to win the tournament. After both combatants lost, he casted them aside while also telling Arin about how the ninja were responsible for the Merge before watching Nokt defeat Sora and prepared to take over the Merged Realms. However, Nokt betrays Ras and releases the rest of the Forbidden Five, until his seized powers were taken from him, forcing them to retreat to the Cloud Kingdom portal gate with the tiger dragged along when he attempted to intervene. Ras ends up in a different realm alongside Arin when the gate was destroyed, and the latter helped nurse Ras back to health with intentions of finding his parents.

He was voiced by Brian Drummond who also voices Iron Baron, Char and Gripe in Ninjago, the Nightmare King in LEGO DREAMZzz, Butt-ler and Dr. Buttocks in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, The Emperor in the Slugterra franchise, Krytus in Hot Wheels: Battle Force 5 and Mr. Dr. Eggman and Dr. Done-It in Sonic Prime.

Biography[]

Background[]

Ras was born in the Realm of the Wyldness. As a child, Ras fell down a chasm trying to get his ball and got stuck. Unable to escape, he was approached by a mysterious being who would become his master and teach him strength in exchange for saving him.

In the following years, Ras left the Wyldness and came to Imperium. His purpose was to assist his Master in their quest to capture the seven Source Dragons in order to harness their energy, which they aim to use for the purpose of conquering the realms. Ras sought an audience with the Emperor of the time, explaining how Imperium had the potential to become the most powerful nation if they joined forces in capturing a Source Dragon. Ras emphasized that Imperium's technology possessed the necessary capabilities to achieve this feat, making it a promising endeavor.

The Emperor turned him away, only for Beatrix, power hungry and desiring control of the throne, to come enlist his help in killing/imprisoning the remainder of her family. With his help, Beatrix was able to take over and she appointed Ras to work at her aside. Ras managed to capture a Source Dragon for Imperium. However, draining the energy from the Source Dragon was intricate than anticipated. This turn of events prompted Ras to devise a new plan centered around the Source Dragon's energy. With the realms coming together as a result of the Merge, Ras shifted his focus towards a young dragon named Riyu, recognizing the pivotal role Riyu's energy played in his grand scheme.

Season 1: Part 1[]

Ras enlisted the Claws of Imperium to apprehend Riyu as part of his plan, ensuring that he would not tolerate any failures, particularly from Rapton. However, to his dismay, he discovered the next day that Riyu had managed to escape from their custody. Determined to take matters into his own hands, Ras confronted and defeated Arin, Sora, and Riyu single-handedly, then threatened to harm Riyu's herd. A sudden MergeQuake materialized in the sky, much to Ras' delight. He promptly ordered the Claws of Imperium to secure the three prisoners, determined to eliminate any further obstacles. Despite the Claws of Imperium's unsuccessful attempts to capture Riyu's herd, Ras took the initiative and informed Beatrix about Lloyd's revelation and his connection to the herd's Matriarch.

By the end of part 1, Lord Ras is imprisoned by Imperium for failing to complete his mission.

Season 1: Part 2[]

Upon getting out, Ras learned about Jordana’s skill to drain Source Dragon energy, a feat that was believed to be impossible. Ras informed his Master about Jordana and sought her as a potential ally. Ras emphasized that Jordana would surpass Sora's expectations. Despite Ras's encouragement, Jordana still feels remorseful about the consequences of her work, fearing that it almost brought about the end of the world. Ras, however, informed Jordana that her work was flawless and it was the ninja who ruined everything. He then reveals that his Master has more plans in store. Mistaking the Master to be Beatrix, Jordana is skeptical about these plans, since Beatrix is nowhere to be found. Ras clarifies that Beatrix was merely a pawn and not his true Master. Nevertheless, Ras assures Jordana that there are alternative methods to achieve their goals. Ras reveals that he has spoken to his true Master about Jordana, implying that she possesses unique abilities that can aid in their plan. He mentions the raw Source Dragon energy that Jordana had drained and asks if she has any reserves. Jordana presents him with a vial containing the energy, piquing Ras's interest. He explains that with the raw energy, they can unlock forbidden secrets and tap into dark powers that have been dormant for centuries. Ras confidently asserts that no one, not even the ninja, will stand a chance against them. As Ras walked away, Jordana decided to join him.

Season 2: Part 1[]

Ras and Jordana ventured back into the Wyldness, heading towards the Shadow Dojo located in the Forest of Spirits. Using the Source Dragon energy, they managed to unlock the dojo that had been sealed by Egalt and Rontu, paving the way for their next move. Over time, Ras assigned Cinder the task of retrieving the Mallet of Shattering, a powerful artifact paired with the Gong of Shattering. Meanwhile, Ras focused on reassembling the Wolf Clan by recruiting new members. When Cinder successfully returned with the Mallet of Shattering, Ras wasted no time in putting their next plan into action. Leading the Wolf Clan, he launched a daring assault on the Cloud Kingdom, where they confronted the Writers of Destiny. By coercing the writers to translate ancient Theroxian texts, Ras aimed to unlock the secrets to perform the Ritual of the Blood Moon. Despite facing opposition from the ninja to thwart their plans, Ras and the Wolf Clan managed to overpower them. Thanks to Cinder's Shatterpin, the ninja were forced to retreat, allowing Ras to continue with his dark ambitions unimpeded.

Ras spent a considerable amount of time teaching Cinder how to perform Shatterspin. Additionally, he orchestrated a plan where the Wolf Mask Warriors successfully captured Bonzle, the very spell responsible for banishing the Forbidden Five, thus holding the key to their release as well. Furthermore, Ras received specific instructions from his master to select five Writers of Destiny, who would take the place of the Forbidden Five in their imprisonment within the Nether-Space. When the Blood Moon ascended, Ras instructed the Wolf Clan to ready the Ritual of the Blood Moon. He dispatched Jordana to apprehend Bonzle, while Cinder was tasked with leading the Wolf Clan to the Shadow Dojo. Ras also plotted the destruction of Cloud Kingdom and the Cloud Monks, deeming them insignificant. However, his patience waned as Jordana arrived late, without Bonzle, provoking Ras' frustration. Ras learned that Arin had intervened to save Bonzle, further enraging Ras. Ras confronted Arin alone. Ras believed Arin had untapped potential, but was hindered by the ninja. Ras emphasized the importance of strength, recounting his own journey to enlightenment. He suggested Arin find a true master to impart the same lesson, before departing with Bonzle in tow.

After capturing Bonzle, Ras and the Wolf Clan commenced the ritual, during which Ras informed his Master that their plan was finally coming to fruition. He was confident that, if all went according to plan, it was only a matter of time that his Master would finally attain the true power of the Merged Realms. Ras then proceeded to recite the Theroxian scroll to initiate the ritual. Ras detected the ninja infiltrating the Shadow Dojo and ordered his warriors to halt their interference, allowing him to proceed undisturbed. As the portal materialized, Ras demanded sacrifices, but realized that the Writers of Destiny had managed to escape. Kai unleashed the Rising Dragon technique, surpassing Cinder's Shatterspin, leaving Ras astonished. Suddenly, Lloyd launched an attack on Ras, but Ras skillfully evaded the energy bolts and engaged in a fierce battle with Lloyd. Seizing the opportunity, Ras taunted Lloyd, asserting that the ritual was nearing completion. However, Lloyd confidently declared Ras' defeat with the Writers of Destiny escaping. But Ras hurled his hammer at Kai, propelling him through the gateway and freeing Nokt from his exile.

As the ninja retaliated, Ras announced his intentions to sacrifice Nya next by throwing her into the portal. However, Arin intervened by throwing the hand of the Elemental Fire Mech, preventing Ras from carrying out his plan. After the portal closed, Ras called for his master's assistance and found himself, along with Nokt, Jordana, Cinder, the Wolf Mask Warriors, and the Shadow Dojo, in a new location. Nokt was angry with Ras for abandoning the mission, but Ras took credit for Nokt's freedom and tasered him with a gadget to ensure loyalty. Ras then reprimanded Jordana for failing to keep the portal open. Suddenly, Ras was summoned by his master and explained that the Ritual of the Blood Moon was just one step in his plan. He vowed to win the Tournament of the Sources and gain dominance over the Source Dragons, assuring his master that their desired power would soon be within their grasp.

Personality[]

Oh, he's evil, all right, hundred percent. Even his breath smells evil.
~ Arin describing Ras' personality.

Ras is a very power-hungry, manipulative, and intimidating anthropomorphic tiger. When he was a child in the Wyldness, Ras was abandoned until he met his master. During the long years they spent together, Ras learned from his master that strength was all that mattered and decided to fulfill his master's plan, even if it took years.

When he first came to Imperium, he managed to win Princess Beatrix over to his side with lies and then helped her rise to power by ruthlessly murdering her father and later imprisoned the Source Dragon of Energy and started draining its energy. Ras uses intimidation on all his subordinates as a method to get what he wants. Several times, this intimidation even reached physical attacks.

Once he was imprisoned by the Empress, he tried to manipulate her again, telling her that she had no chance of winning without him. When he then managed to escape, he met Jordana, whom he chose as the next person he could manipulate. He revealed to her his true intentions, which is that he serves his true master, to whom he is truly devoted. His devotion is even so great that he considers his mission the only significant thing and sees no possibility of failure.

A year after leaving Imperium with Jordana, Ras admitted that he hated the culture of the Imperians and their ways of completely ignoring the other realms and thinking they were superior to everyone else. He then opened the Shadow Dojo and welcomed another member of his new army, Cinder. Together with Jordana, he then taught them, Cinder how to properly use Shatterspin and he encouraged Jordana to study the Theroxian scrolls and learn their magic. When they succeeded, Ras was pleased with them, but when they showed signs of displeasure or disappointment, he would become very angry and even physically hurt them.
