“ | Zombies are no good! I can't serve my customers spoiled meat like that. I... have a reputation to uphold! | „ |
~ Larry Chiang to Frank West. |
Larry Chiang is a minor antagonist in the 2006 horror videogame Dead Rising and its 2024 remake, the first installement of the Dead Rising franchise.
He was a butcher working at the Seons' Foods & Stuff supermaket inside the Willamette Parkview Mall who has gone insane due to the zombie apocalypse. Frank West encounters him when he prepares to throw the unconscious and injured Carlito Keyes into the grinder to make ground meat out of him, believing that humans are fresh meat and zombies are spoiled meat.
He was voiced by the late Michael Yama in the original game and Brent Mukai in the Deluxe Remaster.
Appearance[]
Original[]
Larry is a very tall, obese, and bald Asian man with brown skin, a thin goatee and lacks two of his central incisors on his teeth. His clothing consisted of a large white sweaty shirt with bloodstains, the left part of his body being exposed because it was transparent from sweat, black pants and white wellington boots. His bare hands are filled with bloodstains, and he is armed with a butcher knife, which he used to murder any individual who came across him. He also has a Chinese character of "meat" (肉) tattooed on the back of his neck.
Deluxe Remaster[]
Larry was completely redesigned to be less of a racial stereotype as a white American man with glasses, possesses all of his teeth and a clean mustache. He appears more muscular than obese and his outfit consists of a clean slaughterhouse uniform with bloodstained apron over a white shirt, white pants, white gloves and white wellington boots. He also wears a comically undersized blue baseball cap that reads "Larry's Choice Cuts", which is also found on the back of his white shirt beneath the collar that also has a Chinese character of "meat" (肉) on the back of his shirt rather than on the neck.
Personality[]
Larry Chiang is a subject whose sense of reason and sanity were uncertain to say the least. Characterized by pathological obsession with his job, Larry believed that to keep the reputation he had in Willamette as the best "butcher" it was necessary for him to kill people and produce meat products from their flesh. When he suspected that Frank could have suggested zombie meat as an alternative, he became visibly upset, referring to zombies as "no good" and "spoiled meat", indicating that he was aware of the zombie outbreak, but was too absorbed into his work to concern himself with survival, as well as retained his standards and dedication to his profession even after going insane. He had no mercy for the people he slaughtered, as it's heavily implied that he stopped viewing his victims as human beings, but as a source of meat for him to prepare and sell. That being said, despite his severely impaired mental wellbeing, Larry comes off as genuinely amicable to his customers and will only attack anyone if provoked or in need of more "meat".
Biography[]
Past[]
Larry was the best butcher in Willamette, Colorado, the meat that was served on the family's plates came from Larry's work, he even had a reputation to cover for all his consumers. He did not dislike touching the piles of bags of dead animals with his hands that, over time, he would shred them to take to the supermarket just above the meat processing area.
He was a mall worker whose position was very isolated, his position being in the Maintenance Tunnels. Various aspects of his life are unknown, he is only aware of his work in the mall and his actions that gave him a place as a psychopath.
Dead Rising[]
Jessie McCarney and Frank West see Larry on the monitors in the Security Room dragging an injured Carlito to the Meat Processing Area. Jessie tells Frank that Carlito is seriously injured and that if he doesn't hurry up, they'll lose their chance to get important information from him on the outbreak.
Frank goes to the Maintenance Tunnels under the mall where he enters into the Meat Processing Area. Inside, Larry puts Carlito onto a meat hook and to be ready to be tossed into a meat grinder. Larry notices Frank and still in a delusional state, greets him as a friendly customer, and states that Frank must have come to him to buy some ground meat. Frank, seeing that Larry is insane, tries to reason with him, telling him that he doesn't want to buy ground meat, but instead "has something else in mind". This upsets Larry because he thinks Frank means zombie meat. Larry tells him that he cannot sell his customers rotten meat and has a reputation to uphold. Larry assures Frank that he knows what he is doing as he is a butcher, and then starts the grinding mill which slowly transports Carlito straight into it.
Frank, with no other choice, must kill the mad butcher before he ends Carlito's life in a brutal way.
After Frank defeats him, Larry falls on the ground and starts giggling, before finally succumbing to his wounds and dying on the spot.

Trivia[]
- Larry is a unique boss in the fact that he won't outright attack the player at the beginning of the battle, he must be hit first for him to start attacking. This is because he was still respecting of Frank, as he still saw him as a friendly customer.
- Larry has the Chinese character for "meat" tattooed on the back of his neck. In the Deluxe Remaster, it is on the back of his shirt under the Larry's Choice Cuts logo.
- It is unknown what Larry did during the four days since the outbreak, it is presumed that he kidnapped survivors and slaughtered them, putting them in a special machine that crushed any type of meat and put them in metal buckets as he would have done with Carlito Keyes, possibly committing acts of cannibalism by devouring the waste.
- His boss fight theme is On a Mission by Hostile Groove, a rapcore song (according to Last.fm).
- Larry Chiang’s redesign in the Deluxe Remaster has faced controversy for changing his race from Asian to white, with his last name being a possible Taiwanese-origin means he was likely redesigned to avoid controversy with Mainland China due to recent conflicts with the Taiwanese government and it's tensions haven risen with the recent elections.
- Another possible reason for his redesign is that the stereotype in question of his appearance in the original version was likely not only related to his physical characteristics, but by the belief that East Asian Americans ate animals unusually for consumption in the United States, and thus had poor food safety standards. Also, the meat processing area now appears much more maintained and sterile in the remaster, whereas the original version was poorly lit and crusted with stains.
- The redesigned Larry might also be a reference to TV chef Robert Irvine, who is similarly muscular and wears glasses.
