Lao Gui is a major antagonist of the 2015 beat 'em up drama video game Yakuza 0 (specifically being one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Tsukasa Sagawa) and final boss of Majima's scenario and a minor antagonist in Kiryu's scenario).
He is Asia's most successful and dangerous assassin, working on behalf of Sohei Dojima and secretly Keiji Shibusawa. It's heavily implied that he was responsible for killing the man that Kiryu was framed for murdering, which led to the events of the game.
He's voiced by Koji Suzuki in Japanese. In the Chinese version, he's modeled after and voiced by Sam Lee.
Biography[]
Lao Gui is instructed to abduct and deliver Tetsu Tachibana to the Dojima Family. He is first seen when Kiryu and Tachibana are leaving Little Asia to go to West Park and see Makoto. Tachibana stops and says he has realized they are being watched. Lao Gui shoots Kiryu and Tachibana quickly takes Kiryu aside to protect him. Tachibana reveals that the one who did the killing which Kiryu was framed for was Lao Gui. Tachibana agrees to go with Lao Gui in exchange for Kiryu to be spared from the latter's wrath.
When Kiryu finds Tachibana, he reveals that Lao Gui was hired by Sohei Dojima to commit the hit that Kiryu has wrongly been charged with.
After Majima defeats Awano in the Dojima Family HQ he is confronted by Lao Gui who attempts to shoot him several times. Awano jumps in the way and blocks the bullets from getting to Majima. Awano runs at Lao Gui who then stabs him with claws. This kills Awano.
Dojima then enters the room and states that as long as he has access to Lao Gui he can take any life he wants as Lao Gui is the greatest hitman in Asia. He then orders Lao Gui to kill Majima and returns to his office.
Majima and Lao Gui engage in combat with the former being the victor. Majima throws Lao Gui against the door of Dojima's office thus breaking it open. Majima knees Lao Gui in the face.
Dojima takes out a gun and attempts to shoot Majima but his shot misses. Masaru Sera then enters the room and shoots the gun out of Dojima's hand.
Majima prepares to kill Lao Gui and Dojima until Sera explains to him that if he does Makoto will be very upset as it would make it so she owes Majima a debt she can never repay. Lao Gui laughs and Majima takes out a knife and tries to stab him but chooses not to at the last minute.
Sera holds a gun at Lao Gui and informs Majima that he will keep the hitman incarcerated at the Nikkyo Consortium’s headquarters as leverage against Dojima, as should the Dojima Family gain too much power once again, the Consortium would be able to use Lao Gui as evidence on the various immoral and illegal actions Dojima had ordered.
Trivia[]
- The Hong Kong version of Yakuza 0 replicates the likeness of Hong Kong actor Sam Lee to portray Lao Gui. This is partially due to the fact that the Chinese that Lao Gui speaks prior to this version is deemed to be "low quality" by Chinese fans and also partially due to SEGA wanting to increase the sales of the game.
- This makes Lao Gui the first major character in the entire series to receive a dedicated Chinese dub.
