Hirogen are a dangerous faction of aliens found in the Star Trek universe, making their debute in the Star Trek: Voyager series - they are notable for a cultural fascination with hunting down other species, which puts them in direct confrontation with most other species in the galaxy, including the Federation.
Biography[]
The origins of the Hirogen species is unclear but they have long become a nomadic space-faring race by the time they were encountered by Voyager, the Hirogen abandoned most forms of society in pursuit of a cultural ideal of the "hunt" - pursuing other species and taking their skulls as trophies, they believed species that put up resistance before being slain were "worthy prey" and took great pride in hunting such sport. Hirogen were slowly wiping themselves out due to this obsession, however, as it was noted their culture has barely changed for over a thousand years and if left to continue the Hirogen may well cause their own extinction - despite this the Hirogen still hold some degree of honor when it comes to their hunts, for example they believe that "prey" should not endure unnecessary suffering.
