Who do you think you are, Pilgrim? You think you're better than me? I'll tell you what you are - a pain in my ASS! Do you know how long it took to get all the evil exes' contact information so I can form this stupid league? Like two hours! TWO HOURS!!! You're not cool enough for Ramona. You're zero! You're nothing! Me? I'm what's hip. I'm what's happening. I'm blowing up right now!
~ Gideon's Villainous Breakdown to Scott Pilgrim before he defeats him.

Gideon Gordon Graves is the main antagonist of the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World based on the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim.

As with his literary counterpart he is a record producer and club enterpriser who owns both the Chaos Theatre and GGG Industries on top of being Ramona Flowers' seventh evil ex and the leader of the League of Evil Exes. He is the archenemy of both Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. He is notably distinct from his original counterpart by being significantly less vile and dark even though many of his original crimes are still intact.

He was portrayed by Jason Schwartzman, who also played the animated version of Graves in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Ethan Dulles in Slackers, Gag Halfrunt in the 2005 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy film adaptation, Josto Fadda in Fargo and the Spot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Appearance[]

Gideon is an attractive man in his early thirties with fair skin, an oval shaped face, soft facial features, thick wavy mid-length brown hair and brown eyes. He is slightly smaller than his comic counterpart, being shorter in stature than both Scott and Ramona and has a slender build. Gideon is also always seen wearing his black, thick rimmed, rectangular glasses on his face and several rings on his fingers.

When Gideon first appears he is a wearing a black blazer with a T-Shirt underneath depicting the logo of his company GGG Heavy Industries as well as dark jeans and shoes. During the opening of Toronto's Chaos Theatre and in all of the film's promotional materials he is seen wearing a white blazer with a red shirt underneath as well as black slacks, a black tie and white shoes with black laces. He also holds a silver cane while wearing this outfit which at first glance appears to be for fashion purposes but is actually to conceal his silver rapier, after having said sword destroyed he materializes a more powerful pixelated blue Katana.

Personality[]

2010gideon2

Gideon provoking Scott.

Gideon is an intelligent, charismatic, confident and persuasive businessman however he is also incredibly arrogant, smug and passive aggressive, all traits that seem to seep through even when he's being genuine and friendly to someone. Gideon is also highly controlling and proves himself to have a fiery temper when things don't go his way, as shown from not only his creation of the League in the first place but his hatred for Scott immediately being rekindled when the latter decides to fight him.

Gideon's most disturbing qualities come from his treatment of Ramona, while emotionally neglecting her throughout their relationship he immediately becomes obsessed and possessive over her as soon as she tries to leave him, going as far as to put a microchip in her neck to make her unable to ever fully let him go and creating the League of Evil Exes in an attempt to kill anyone who threatens to take her away from him. Gideon later goes as far to attack Ramona in a fit of fury when she finally turns against him.

Biography[]

In the movie, Ramona mentions Gideon Gordon Graves a few times, but he does not make an appearance until Scott's battle with the Katayanagi Twins.

Ggideon1

Gideon with Ramona.

During Scott's battke with the Japanese twins Kyle and Ken Katayanagi, Scott sees him close to Ramona, just like if they were still together. Gideon reveals himself as the manager of Scott's band (the "Sex Bob-omb"), G-Man, and tells them he will offer a recording contract, which the whole band, sans Scott, immediately signs. Ramona breaks up with him shortly after and Scott goes home and falls into a deep depression, only to be called by Gideon on the phone, asking him to come to the Chaos Theatre, to show there are no hard feelings. At the Theatre, Scott challenges him to a fight, while Gideon asks him why he is risking his life for her.

When Scott professes his love for Ramona, he gains a new sword and engages Gideon in a fight, until another girl named Knives (who desperately likes Scott on the same level he loves Ramona, even though he dumped her) enters the chamber and fights Ramona over Scott. He stops his fight with Gideon to stop theirs and admits he cheated on them with each other, giving Gideon the opportunity to kill him. He is sent into a Limbo and talks to Ramona, who reveals that she broke up with Gideon because he ignored her all the time, but still kept her around with a microchip implanted in her head, which made her fall in love with him against her will.

Gideondeath

Gideon's defeat.

Scott then remembers he has an extra life and uses it to return to the theatre. He again engages Gideon, this time fighting for himself, granting him another sword. He knocks Gideon unconscious and apologizes to both girls, but when Graves tries to kill him again, Scott and Knives activate "two-player mode" and finally deal a fatal blow, destroying Gideon, who explodes in a shower of 7,000,000,000 game coins that rain all over his theatre.

Trivia[]

  • Compared to the original version of the character, Gideon's villainous actions were toned down in the movie, as events like freezing his seven ex-girlfriends or almost killing Ramona did not occur.
  • After being defeated, the original plan was for him to transform into a giant robot named Mecha-Gideon. However, due to budget issues, this idea was abandoned and the form was replaced with a completely different character called Nega Scott.
