Elincia: Uncle! You intend to join the fight!? Please, you mustn’t push yourself too hard!
Renning: My, how things have changed! Am I to take orders from my niece on what battles I am allowed to fight in? I’m not a princess to be coddled and kept safe behind the vanguard, Elincia. I am a knight of Crimea, and I will be one until I die. As long as I live, as long as I am able to walk, and as long as I draw breath, I shall fight. It is my duty.
~ Renning talking to his niece and liege Elincia about his desire to fight.

Prince Renning Crimea, also known as Bertram is a supporting character in the Fire Emblem Tellius duology: he is a minor antagonist in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and a supporting character in its sequel Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.

He is the crown prince of the Kingdom of Crimea and the uncle of Elincia, the deuteragonist of Path of Radiance. He has been turned into one of Daein's Four Riders during the Mad King's War and was forced to face Elincia as a result.

He was voiced by Masashi Nogawa in Japanese and Luis Bermudez (who also voiced Carlito Keyes in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster) in English.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Renning was the younger brother of King Ramon, the ruler of the Kingdom of Crimea. a benevolent man and talented politician, Renning was popular among the leaders of the other countries of the continent of Tellius, including the monarch of Beast Tribe Laguzs Caineghis. He was named heir to the throne by his brother during his rule. However, King Ramon and his wife gave birth to a daughter named Elincia. In order to avoid a war of succession during which Renning and Elincia would have to compete for the throne, the latter's existence was kept a secret and she was raised in a villa on the countryside. In spite of this, Renning and his niece deeply cared about one another and the prince took under his wing Elincia's friend and milk brother Geoffrey.

Renning was not only the prince of Crimea, but also the leader of the Crimean Royal Knights, his country's elite military force. He took Geoffrey as his apprentice and had the mage Bastian as his loyal advisor. He also befriended Elincia's milk sister/Geoffrey's sister Lucia, who became loyal to both him and Elincia.

While Elincia reached adulthood, the Kingdom of Daein, led by an insane tyrant named Ashnard, declared war to her country. The Mad King killed Elincia's parents at the beginning of the war, which forced Renning to lead his troops from the frontline and cover Elincia's escape by sacrificing himself. After most of his troops were slaughtered by Ashnard's army, Renning was captured and presumably killed by Daein. However, Ashnard kept Renning alive, due to being impressed by his fighting skills. Izuka, Ashnard's head scientist forced him to drink the feral elixir (a drug made to force Laguz to permanently assume their beast forms and become feral) and the prince became the insane knight Bertram, who was named as one of Daein's elite generals: the Four Riders.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance[]

Renning/Bertram appears as the boss of the twenty-sixth chapter, where he faces Elincia's army, which includes Geoffrey (who is now the commander of the Royal Knights), Lucia, Bastian and the mercenary crew known as the Greil's Mercenaries (led by General ike) among others. During this chapter, the Crimean Army is attacking Fort Pinell, one of the two last strongholds Elincia and Ike must take before launching an assault on Daein's capital, and Bertram is its commander.

During the battle, Bertram is eventually forced to fight Elincia herself, who fails to recognize him as her missing uncle. Regardless Bertram tries to fight off Izuka's drug and begs Elincia to run away from him, only for her to freak out at his sight. He is defeated and apparently slain at the end of the battle, but Bastian realizes than Bertram is his missing master, recovers his body and finds out that he actually survived his demise against Ike and Elincia. After the war, Bastian sends him to Castle Fayre (his residence), becomes Crimea's Deputy Prime Minister and hires the assassin Volke to capture Izuka and find a cure to bring Renning/Bertram back to normal.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn[]

Renning/Bertram returns in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Part 4, where Bastian, Goeffrey and Izuka (whom Volke captured after the fall of the army from the Begnion Empire occupying Daein) search for the Heron Prince Reyson, who could heal Bertram, and join Elincia and the Hawk King Tibarn's army after the antagonistic goddess Ashera turned most people in Tellius into stone. However, Izuka escapes Bastian and Goeffrey's custody and challenges the Hawk Army in battle. After the battle, which ends with Izuka's death, Reyson uses the magical artifact known as the galdr of rebirth to restore Renning/Bertram back to normal.

After resting and regaining his sanity, Renning orders Bastian to prepare his arsenal and his horse so he could help Elincia and Co. against Ashera. He joins them after they cleared the first floor of the Tower of Judgment - Ashera's lair - and killed Begnion's Vice Minister. After sparring with Geoffrey, he joins the Hawk Army. He helps Ike, Elincia and Begnion's heiresses Micaiah and Sanaki take down Ashera, returns to Crimea and helps his niece, now Crimea's ruler, to secure her rule.

Betram is a boss and a playable character in the gacha mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes, as a grand hero battle unit.

Quotes[]

Bastian: Duke Renning was one of the strongest warriors in Crimea, and while Daein tried to kill him, he survived. When the Mad King heard of his skill, he had Renning kidnapped and gave him the drug that creates Feral Ones. This drug made Duke Renning even stronger, but shattered his mind. He became Bertram, one of Ashnard’s infamous Four Riders. After Her Majesty and company defeated him, I had him taken back to my castle. I hoped to find a cure, but I didn’t want to raise false hope, Your Majesty, so I kept the secret. However, his mind continued to deteriorate, and there were no signs of improvement.

~ Bastian explaining to Elincia, Lucia and Tibarn what happened to Renning/Bertram
Bertram: ......Gu...guuoo...
Elincia: ...Eeep...
Bertram: ...Gu...oo...OOO...
~ Bertram facing Elincia in Path of Radiance.
Renning: I swear to you that I will never leave you behind. I swear it upon my pride as a knight and upon my love for my country. Now, Your Majesty, please grant me the honor of protecting you in battle.
Elincia: Oh, Uncle... You may have to compete for that role, I think.
Geoffrey: Duke Renning... I will not give up my place as the commander of the Royal Knights, even to you.
Renning: Let’s take it outside, then. Perhaps I’ll remind you why you have never won a match against me.
~ Elincia, Renning and Geoffrey in Radiant Dawn
Bertram: ...Ga...aaa... Releasssse...
~ Bertram's (fake) death quote in Path of Radiance.
Renning: Flesh that has died once...does not fear dying again...
~ Bertram/Renning's real death quote if he dies in Radiant Dawn.

Trivia[]

  • Bertram is the only member of the Four Riders who is never killed by the heroes by the end of the Tellius duology.
  • Despite his position as Crimea's heir, Elincia's uncle, Ashnard's high ranked minion and one of the most influential characters in Tellius, he barely appears in both games.
